St. Francis School February 2020 This month we begin the season of Lent. Since the earliest days of the church, Christians have prepared for Good Friday and Easter Sunday by prayer and fasting. We become closer to Jesus when we attend Sunday Mass with our loved ones. Our children attend the “Stations of the Cross” devotion. For 2,000 years Catholics prayerfully remember the painful jour- FATHER PAT ney of Jesus as He carried His cross through the streets of Jerusalem to Calvary Hill. This is a most blessed time to re- flect on our Christian life and renew our efforts to make ourselves worthy of the King- dom of God. May we journey as did Jesus from this world to our eternal home. Catholic Schools Week was great fun! The students en- joyed all the wonderful activities, including the teacher swap, learning about careers from the adults who spoke to classes, and Pastor Poke’s visit, to name a few. Pastor Poke is from St. Paul’s Baptist Church and he spoke to the students about MRS. SIKORA doing acts of kindness. I am happy to say his message took root. Fifth grader Damon Master, who won the Matchbox Car Race for 5th grade, gave his DQ prize to another 5th grade student who had loaned Damon the winning car. Way to be kind, Damon! For the next two weeks, students in grades K-5 will be administered the second ses- sion of MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) online assessment. The consensus among the faculty is that this method is preferable to the former standardized testing because the focus is on meeting each student where they are and then looking for ac- ademic growth. Results will be sent home in third quarter report cards. Each year a student in fifth grade is selected to receive the Thomas Aquinas Award, and this year the honor went to the very deserving Gia Lopez. Gia will be recognized at the Bishop’s Dinner in Morgantown. Congratulations Gia! Mallory D’Angelo repre- sented SFS at the KCS Spelling Bee. The Bee includes students up to 8th grade, and Mallory made it to the 5th round. Way to go, Mallory! Mallory and Isaac Franck will be representing SFS at the KCS Math Field Day on February 11. All of us at SFS are very proud of you both. Our basketball teams are hitting the courts each week, and I would like to thank our wonderful coaches who volunteer their time to work with the children. Also, the Chess
Team has been practicing on Thursdays, and plans to compete in a league tourna- ment this month. Thanks to Daniel and Anita Weber for coaching the children. Our wonderful STEM volunteer, Stacy Cossin, is no longer able to help the students with STEM activities because she was offered a job. Congratulations, Stacy! If any- one would like to volunteer for STEM, please contact Mrs. Oxley in the school office. We are enrolling for next school year. Enrollment packets were sent home, and kin- dergarten and preschool roundup is February 21. The kindergarten class is full with a waiting list, but we still have openings in preschool. As Spring approaches, we have two wonderful events for families. The Ceili dinner dance at Angela’s on the River, on March 21, is a fun evening of music, dance, deli- cious food, and a silent auction. Our wonderful parent, Josh Collins is the DJ for the night, and tickets are going fast! On April 17, Fr. Bill Matheny is hosting a Trivia Night in the gym. There will be a teacher team, food, drinks and lots of fun! Please call the school office for information. Good Samaritans—January The Good Samaritan Award is given to a child who shows concern for his/her classmates. K-2: Maddux Withrow 3-5: Sophie Burgroff Best Dressed Award Congratulations to students who received 100% on uniform checks. They will receive an extra recess as a reward. Kindergarten and PK Round-Up Kindergarten and PK Round-up will be on Friday, February 21st. Students with last names A-K will be from 9am-11am. Students with last names L-Z will be from 12pm-2pm. (No School for preschool and kindergarten.) Our Catholic Schools Week Celebration was a fun time for all of us. The children looked so cute dressed for Fuzzy Wuzzy Day, Career Day, Fake an Injury Day, and Book Character Day. We had a great time brushing the dinosaur’s teeth with Ms. Serna and creating a Snowman Snack with Chef Gina. MRS. LAGO What a great way to celebrate our students and our school. We will share our Valentines Thursday, February 13, 2020. Please have your child sign his/her first name on 19 Valentine cards and bring them to school to share with their classmates. We have bags for the children to decorate at school (to carry their Valentines home). Please send completed Valentine card to school by Wednesday, February 12, 2020. Thanks!
This month we will complete our Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Study. We are collect- ing clean, safe, recyclable materials. Examples include empty water bottles, paper bags, paper towel tubes, and newspapers. Thanks for your support. We are learning to name all of the letters of the alphabet. Alphabet Bingo is becoming a class favor- ite. Happy February! During Dental Health Month we will be learning about the importance of taking care of our teeth and foods we should eat to keep us healthy. We will also work on our shapes, learn about the many forms of transportation, and keep moving through the alphabet, focusing on the letters S, T, U, and V. MRS. SHREWSBURY Our Valentine’s Day party will be on Friday, February th 14 at 10:30 a.m. Families are welcome to join us! We would like to wish Mrs. Hall a very Happy Birthday this month! Happy Val- entine’s Day! February is a very fun month in our classroom! We are learning about recycling, and we are creating activities and in- ventions from recycled products. The children are really en- joying this study starter, and we are as well! We are also fo- cusing on working as a team and supporting our friends. Our kindergarten roundup is also this month, so we are beginning MS. BURNS to discuss kindergarten and how kindergarten is similar and different from preschool. I want to thank our parents for their generous donations of antibacterial wipes and sprays. We are doing our very best to stay healthy during this cold and flu season! February is here so Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Our class will decorate a bag in class. Our class party will be on Friday, February 14 at 1:45. Students may bring in their Valentine’s beginning February 12th. Reminder-students only need to write their own name on the valentine. MRS. LOPEZ We all really enjoyed Catholic schools week! We would like to thank Mr. Allen for coming in for career day, we really enjoyed learning about the careers. I would like to wish a happy birthday this month to Esther and Fischer!!!
The students enjoyed Catholic Schools Week! They had so much fun dressing up each day. We appreciate our parents for coming in to tell us about their careers on Career Day. We would like to thank Mrs. Underhill (Dalton’s mother), Mrs. Arey (Andrew’s mother), Caci Cooper (Sagrada’s aunt), and Mr. MS. POTTER Clemons (Alan’s dad). We learned so much from them! It was also wonderful to see the careers the children had chosen for themselves. They did a great job sharing about their career choices with the class. In math, the students are continuing to count money, tell time to the half hour, and identify and draw congruent shapes. To provide extra practice with two-digit addition, the children are pretending to shop and add items on receipts. They are using dimes and pennies to find the total cost of the items. They are also practicing addition and subtraction facts daily. Please continue to practice these skills at home too. The students will be learning the new jingles for the preposition and object of the preposition. It is amazing to watch them classify sentences. They enjoy taking turns and teaching the class how to label the words correctly on the Smartboard and classi- fying sentences on the whiteboards. In Religion, we will continue our lessons on kindness. We were inspired by our won- derful message about kindness from Pastor Poke. The students will be thinking about how they can be kind by helping others, sharing, and caring about how others feel. They enjoy “catching” someone being kind and giving them a kindness card. It is hard to believe that we already celebrated the 100th Day of School! The children enjoyed doing our 100th day activities. The school year is more than halfway over. Please continue to check over your child’s homework and help him/her correct mistakes. Spending just a few minutes each day reviewing their work helps tremen- dously! Thank you for all of the support you are providing at home! Happy February! January proved to be very busy and we have really been working on our independence. As the year is get- ting closer to the end, we are about to begin multiplication. The kids are so excited and we have been practicing the Multiplica- tion Mashup song to go along with it. I can’t believe that soon we will be sending home progress reports. We will be very MS. GRISHABER busy this month and I have posted the important dates on Do- Jo as well as sent them home on red paper. We will be going to First Reconciliation this month and we are so ready! They make me so proud and I love the amount of thought that goes into everything that they do and say. Please message me with any questions or concerns on DoJo, through email, or by calling the school! Have a great month!
Happy February! This year is absolutely flying. We are working hard on our narrative stories, finishing our MAPs testing, as well as our usual third grade work. Our SMART 529 essays will be due back on February 26th. Math is getting more diffi- cult by the week, so please go over mistakes on homework each evening, and encourage your students to come to me MRS. FORRESTER with questions! We are already to the halfway point of the quarter, so get your student reading and taking AR tests when you can. We always have time at break and before school. I'd really love it if every third grader got to go to Dairy Queen this time! Thank you to everyone who brought in supplies for the classroom. We are still work- ing hard to keep the room clean and sanitized to that everyone stays healthy! Thank you for always supporting us! We are excited to announce the upcoming opening of our general store, “Martin Mart.” The store will open the day af- ter we complete our lesson on “Sales Tax.” Each student (clerk) will be given lots of practice figuring percenages. Dur- ing the store hours, each student will find the total cost of a purchase including sales tax on a purchase and calculate the MRS. MARTIN amount of change that should be given back after a purchase has been made. As you can see, our math is getting harder and requires the students to drill their multiplication facts and know them at sight. Our goal this nine weeks is for our class to all make their AR goal. Reminder, AR is the equivalent of a test grade in Reading. Fourth grader’s are very excited for our Val- entine’s party and dance on Friday, February 14th. The fourth and fifth grade religion students will celebrate Mardis Gras at the end of the month with a lesson and festivi- ties. In Social Studies we will be studying Black History Month after the conclusion of the civil war. In conclusion of our busy month In conclusion of our busy month, our class will be participating in the “Great Mail Race.” In this race, students from other catholic schools around the United States will write letters to other fourth grade students. By participating in this race, we learn more about regions in our country, how to write a friendly letter, and the proper way to address an envelope. As always, many, many thanks for your support you give to me and my wonderful fourth graders. God Bless each and everyone.
January flew by and now February is coming in with a blast! We have a lot going on in the fifth grade this month. The fifth grade will be visiting CCHS this month. We will also be going to Math Field day too! The Fish Fries are just around the cor- ner, starting the 28th. The class will be wearing their class shirts to the fish fries.
