Frederick News – April 8, 2022 Important Dates APR 8 – Student Council – 5th Grade Bingo Night 6-8 PM APR 13 - Late Start – School starts at 10:05 APR 15 – No School IAR Testing This week and next, our students are taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). Students test in the morning and then follow a modified class schedule for the rest of the day. Make up tests will occur throughout the testing window and immediately following the testing window. You can help your child do his or her best on the test by: • Making sure that your child attends school on the days of testing. • Making sure your child gets a good night sleep the evening prior to testing. • Making sure your child has breakfast or gets breakfast here the morning of testing. • Reminding your child to ask the teacher questions if he or she does not understand the test directions. • Letting your child know that you have confidence in his/her ability to do their best. • Advising your child not to worry about the test, but just to do his or her best PBIS Update Back in January, we sent notice to all families that we wanted to start off 2022 on a positive note and were reviewing our schoolwide SOAR (be Safe, take Ownership, and Always be Respectful) expectations with all students. It is our goal that all members of our school community feel safe, supported, and valued. To encourage a positive conclusion to the school year, our social workers are visiting each homeroom this week. The goal of these meetings will be to reinforce the "Always be Respectful" aspect of our PBIS expectations. We are hoping to engage students in conversation and activities related to reducing disrespectful and/or unkind behavior. Other main topics will include encouraging students to be mindful of the words they use when interacting with others, and recognizing that comments related to any individual's personal characteristics or preferences, race, gender, identity, etc. are never appropriate in school. We will also spend time reinforcing strategies to avoid spreading gossip or rumors in school and suggestions for how students can navigate social media apps in a safe and responsible manner.
As students have acclimated to a return to in-person learning, we have seen an increase in relational peer conflict as a whole. Many of these issues and the tensions that result from these conflicts can be traced back to communication or exchanges that occurred outside of school, especially on social media. Apps like SnapChat are frequently being used by our students and because messages will auto-delete and since students can move in and out of groups, it is easy for interactions to turn to rumors or name calling. We encourage all parents to talk with their children about acceptable use of social media platforms and monitor their children's interactions and use of these applications.

A LONG WALK TO WATER How far are you willing to walk for clean water? For many in South Sudan, villagers have to walk over 3.5 miles to get water. Often, this water is contaminated and easily spreads disease throughout a village. There has also been increased rebel activity in the area making this a dangerous walk. The 5th graders at Frederick School have been learning about refugees which includes reading the novel, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. The story, based on true events, follows the Lost Boys as they flee their home in search of refuge. The novel also deals with the global crisis surrounding the availability of clean water for all. The fifth grade students and staff would like to create awareness for this cause. We will be raising money to support Water for South Sudan, an organization that was founded by Salva Dut, one of the Lost Boys, that builds water wells in Sudan. Our goal is $1,000 by April 1st. To honor their journey, the 5th graders will be walking 3.5 miles as part of the fundraising effort on April 21st and 22nd.
