THE CHURCH AT WORSHIP October 10, 2021 WE GATHER IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD *The congregation is invited to stand in body or spirit Prelude “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” T.A. Dorsey/Allen Nicole Pesce, pianist “I’m So Glad, Jesus Lifted Me!” Trad./Camp Kirland Satan had me bound, Jesus lifted me, Glory, Hallelujah “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” Martin/Gabriel Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise, When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies, I draw the closer to Him; From care He sets me free: God’s eye is on the sparrow, and I know God watches me. Welcome and Announcements (Please fill in the yellow attendance slip enclosed in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate) Minute For Ministry Presbyterian Women (PW) Fran Rechedy Opening Prayer We come before You with praise and worship this morning, gracious and Holy God, Creator and source of all life. Out of chaos and darkness, You spoke the words which brought order and light and life to birth. Your Word brings order, light and life to our lives. We come to worship, to give praise, to hear and to be changed by the experience of the depth of Your care, and the many ways our lives have been blessed by the sacrificial life and love of Jesus and in fellowship with Your church. *Call to Worship God’s Word is living, active and sharper than any two edged sword. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. SUNG RESPONSE: “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." 2
No creature is hidden from it, everything is exposed to the eyes of the one to whom we have to give an answer. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. SUNG RESPONSE: “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey. SUNG RESPONSE: “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” *Hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” Martin Luther A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe does seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing. You ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth His name, from age to age the same; And He must win the battle. Special Music “El Shaddai” Card/Thompson El Shaddai (God Almighty) Age to age You're still the same, By the power of the name. Brad Hendrickson guitar, Rev. Sheryl Campbell, flute Scripture Reading Hebrews 4: 12-16 New Testament Page #206 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Choir Anthem “Amazing Grace” Faith Church Choir text by John Newton, adapted & arranged by John Coates, Jr. 3
WE HEAR GOD’S WORD Prayer of Confession Lord, look upon Your people with grace and love. We are easily affected by the many deceptions and distractions of evil. We were made in Your image, according to Your Word, however slight the resemblance at times. Yet Your Spirit within us reminds us that we belong to You and not the forces that try to work against You, forces from without and within. You have pledged Your care of us; that however needy we may be in any given circumstances, the Eternal is our refuge and underneath are the Everlasting Arms. Merciful God, our hope lies in our belief that what seems impossible for us is possible with You. In this hope we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. *Hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us. We will not fear, for God has willed His truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure. One little word shall fell him. That Word above all earthly powers no thanks to them abideth. The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also. The body they may kill, God's truth abideth still. God’s kingdom is forever! *Welcome Wave/Passing of the Peace (Please turn and wave to the cameras to those who are watching livestream as well as a welcome wave to those around you.) 4
Scripture Readings Romans 8: 31-39 New Testament Page #148 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Sermon “The Problem of Evil” Rev. Mike Campbell WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD *Hymn “We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations” We've a story to tell to the nations, that shall turn their hearts to the right, A story of truth and mercy, a story of peace and light, A story of peace and light. We've a song to be sung to the nations, that shall lift their hearts to the Lord, A song that shall conquer evil, and shatter the spear and sword, And shatter the spear and sword. Refrain For the darkness shall turn to dawning, and the dawning to noonday bright, And Christ's great Kingdom shall come on earth, The Kingdom of love and light. We've a message to give to the nations, that the Lord who reigneth above Has sent us His Son to save us and show us that God is love, And show us that God is love. We've a Savior to show to the nations who the path of sorrow has trod, That all of the world's great peoples may come to the truth of God, May come to the truth of God! Refrain For the darkness shall turn to dawning, and the dawning to noonday bright, And Christ's great Kingdom shall come on earth, The Kingdom of love and light. 5
Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, Who art in Heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Offering Offertory “Blessed Assurance” Crosby/Knapp Brad Hendrickson, guitar Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine; Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood. This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long. Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels descending, bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest; Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. *Doxology Old 100th Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. 6
*Prayer of Dedication Gracious God, we thank You for blessing us with the riches of Your glory and to know the breadth and length, the height and depth of Your love for us so clearly revealed in Jesus. We respond with these gifts and pray that You will bless them and all our efforts to enrich the lives of others through our witness, our love and our generosity. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen. WE ARE SENT WITH BLESSING TO SERVE AND WITNESS *Hymn “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me” African American Spiritual 1. I want Jesus to walk with me. 2. In my trials, Lord, walk with me. I want Jesus to walk with me. In my trials, Lord, walk with me. All along my pilgrim journey, When my heart is almost breaking, Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me. Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me. 3. When I’m in trouble, Lord, walk with me. When I’m in trouble, Lord, walk with me. When my head is bowed in sorrow, Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me. *Benediction *Postlude “We’ll Understand It Better By and By” C.A.Tindley Trials dark on every hand, and we cannot understand all the ways that God would lead us to that blessed Promised Land; But He’ll guide us with His eye, and we’ll follow till we die; We will understand it better by and by.
