At that time, the “Watch Livestream” button on the Event Page and Virtual Classroom will take you directly to the Livestream video. If it is not working, try refreshing your browser just after 9:25am. We do our best to keep our events under 45 minutes. If at any point you find your students are getting restless, feel free to take a break and finish the event via the Livestream Recording. The Resource Package includes a number of different colouring pages that can be a useful tool for students during the event. If you have remote students joining the event via the Livestream, we recommend sending them the link to the Virtual Classroom and they will be able to connect from there. RESOURCE PACKAGE We have put together an entire week of easily differentiated learning activities. Included is a suggested lesson and activity sequence to help you make the most of your virtual experience and guide your students into a greater understanding of the themes of Truth and Reconciliation. The resource package even includes lesson plans written by literacy expert, Adrienne Gear! During the event, Courtney will be reading her book If Instead of a Person, while integrating themes of Truth and Reconciliation. We have designed this event for students in Kindergarten through Grade 4ish. Given this wide range of ages, we will be speaking about Orange Shirt Day and Residential Schools on a fairly surface level. If Instead of a Person depicts traditional teachings on our connection and similarities to Mother Nature. Courtney will highlight that in the past, Residential Schools did not allow such traditional teachings to be shared with children and explain why it is so important to share these Indigenous principles with children and families today. Depending on the age of your learners, it may be appropriate and important to go into more depth on the history and lasting impact of residential schools. We highly recommend using Adrienne Gear’s Shi-shi-etko lesson plans and exploring the virtual classroom to prepare your students for the author visit with Courtney Defriend and to extend their learning beyond Orange Shirt Day. RESOURCE PACKAGE
VIRTUAL CLASSROOM Our Orange Shirt Day Virtual Classroom is filled with child-friendly learning resources designed for learners to explore independently as they extend their learning about Truth & Reconciliation and the Orange Shirt Day message. The videos on the whiteboard include a message from Orange Shirt Day founder, Phyllis Webstad, information about Canada's indigenous people, the history of Residential Schools, and a story told by Fern Gabriel of Kwantlen First Nation. The books on the shelves will take students to hear these important stories read aloud. From the laptops up front, students can learn words in an indigenous language through First Voices, find out what traditional territory they're living on with Native Land, and download printable Orange Shirt Day colouring sheets and response pages, All YouTube videos are linked through SafeShare which removes advertisements and suggested videos to keep learners safe and focused. We highly recommend you preview the videos in the Virtual Classroom to ensure they are appropriate for your learners. VIRTUAL CLASSROOM
QUESTIONS FOR THE AUTHOR During our visit with Courtney Defriend, we will have some time to ask questions submitted by students. We recommend brainstorming questions with students and submitting them prior to the event Of course, you're also welcome to submit questions as they arise during the event. There are two ways that you can submit questions. Q&A Form The best way to submit your questions is through the Q&A form linked below. This organizes the questions in to categories making it easier for us to keep track of questions during the event. Zoom Chat If you are attending the event via the Zoom Meeting, you may use the chat function to submit questions directly to the host. There will be no chat option available on the YouTube Livestream. Q&A FORM
