ENRICHMENT COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 2019-20 Do you love anime? Want a friendly group of people to share your interest in the medium? Have you never had experience with it and want to know where to get started? If you answer yes to any of these questions, then this is the club for you! In this club, we watch and partake in various activities related to anime, manga and all aspects of the culture. Each week we will perform various Anime activities such as debates, discussions, quizzes, games, and more. If you like or want to get into anime or anything related to it, this will be a great opportunity to meet other like-minded people, make friends, and to hopefully develop communication and to enjoy the medium in a whole new way. Whether you’re a veteran fan, a casual fan, or are just getting started, this is the perfect club for your interest! Audition only. This is an ideal opportunity for any student considering a legal career. Students will take part in a mock trial, competing against other students and possibly other schools/colleges. It is a great opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in law to have ‘their day in court’. The trial relates to a criminal case. Students will have the opportunity to develop Bar Mock Trial a variety of skill as advocates, witnesses, jurors, court clerk and usher. Students (Staff led) should be interested in law, mooting, debating and confident in public speaking (but do not need to be studying A level law). Selection of suitable students will be by audition. Biomedical Admissions Test is required by 10 universities for entry into a medicine, dentistry or veterinary science degree programmes. This course of BMAT lessons is designed to help prepare you for the exam. (Staff led) By choosing this enrichment you will also be automatically enrolled on to the medicine pathway. Do you love to read? If the answer to that question is yes, then book club is for you. This enrichment will allow you to take time out of you busy college schedule to immerse yourself in themes of romance, horror, tragedy and much more. Book club isn’t just another boring lesson, it’s a place to express your Book Club interests with a group of fellow students that have the same passions as you. We aim for our sessions to be as fun and as beneficial as possible, as well as help you develop a variety of skills from communication to creative thinking. So if this interests you, then choose book club! Do you like Chess? Do you know how to play chess? Do you like to play casually? Regardless what your answers were, come to chess club! People of Chess Club all skill levels are welcome, even those who don’t know how to play chess. It can be a good stress reliever and can develop your mental problem solving.
Chit chat club is for those of you who want to relax and socialise, getting to know new people outside of lessons. The sessions will be relaxed and casual, a way for you to ease your transition into KEDST. The group won’t be Chit Chat Club strenuous, with activities such as Kahoot, quizzes and group catch ups. An enrichment for you- in which you can ask questions, voice concerns and overall have a chit chat. We hope to see you soon! Having a good mindset is something that is so important, not just in education, but in everything we do. In this group, we want to encourage you to be the best you can be, but not in the way you think! It’s not just about achieving the highest grades, it’s also important to have good mental health, putting your happiness first and then working your way up from there! That’s why we are Choose Happy here, as it’s nice to have a little helping hand from people who care about you. We will try to be an outlet to de-stress and be there to guide and support in as many ways we can. Targeting challenging topics such as ‘comparing yourself to others,’ ‘covert patterns in behaviour that negatively affect us’, ‘how to avoid to the tendency to self-deprecate’. So, don’t stress, stay blessed; and choose happiness first! Are you a Christian looking to make new Christian friends? Are you interested in Christianity and would like to know more about it? Or do you just want an enrichment where you can chill out? If so, Christian Union would love to welcome you! Christian Union We have lots of fun planned, including guest speakers, worship and opportunities for you to ask questions and give your opinions on controversial topics! Don’t be put off if you aren’t a Christian, although we run the enrichment with Christians in mind, we welcome everybody! The Finance Baccalaureate provides you with your first steps towards employment in financial services and is the ideal starting point to become a stockbroker, a bond dealer, or working in the banking sector. It provides an introduction to financial services and, also, prepares you for the CISI CISI Financial Certificate for Introduction to Securities & Investment with topics such as Baccalaureate share-dealing, bond trading, derivatives and equities. (Staff Led) In year 13, there are opportunities to visit the RBS headquarters in London for an Immersion Day and develop an EPQ with a specialist topic in finance. This can provide up to 60 UCAS points for university applications By choosing this enrichment you will also be automatically enrolled on to the Business, Finance and Banking pathway. Join the conspiracy theory club if you wish to get involved in discussions, watch documentaries and play Kahoots. We will be covering topics such as; the Zodiac killer, the disappearance of Madeline McCann, Area 51 and many more Conspiracy Theory thrilling conspiracy theories. By taking part in the conspiracy theory Club enrichment, you will gain new skills, meet new people and create a new hobby, all whilst having fun. As well as conspiracies we are interested in we will also take into account your requests.
Audition only. The College’s own dance company, Pointe VI KE rehearses on a weekly basis to learn exciting and challenging repertoire in a variety of dance Dance Company styles. The company work with the dance tutor to create pieces which are (Staff Led) performed to a very high standard both at the annual college dance show and externally. Discussing anything from religion to politics to pop culture, our group allows you to both Debate Society demonstrate and develop your public speaking skills. We also offer the (Formal) possibility to enter debate competitions in which you can showcase your talent and gain something valuable for your CV or personal statement. No topic is off the table. Informal Debate is a chance to develop, broaden and express your opinions in a safe and friendly environment, where all opinions will be respected and encouraged. By joining Informal Debate, you are allowing yourself the chance to socialise Debate Society and meet many people with similar views to you and also people with (Informal) contrasting views- which allows for growth of self, tolerance and understanding. There will be debates regarding many different aspects- for example- popular culture, socio-political events…as debaters, you too will have the privilege of picking topics to debate about. Next to A levels, DOE is the most recognised and desirable qualification you can gain telling universities and employers so much about you as a person. For those who have either enjoyed Bronze and/or Silver or for new DOE students who just want to try something challenging, this course will train you and give you the experience to complete the expedition section of the Gold award. The expedition training will take place between 24th and 28th August 2020 and the qualification expedition in August 2021. (Dates yet to be Duke of Edinburgh finalised.) You therefore need to be available for both these 5 day trips to the GOLD Lake District. (Staff Led) The combined cost of enrolment and the two separate weeks in the Lake District will be around £700. An initial enrolment fee and deposit of £30 will be required in September. The remaining deposits will be spread throughout the following year. It is great fun and offers you the chance to learn new skills and make new friends. There are, in addition, four other components: Service, Skill, Recreation and Residential. You will be given advice on and supported in College with these sections. As Diversity Action well as helping out with events, we talk about current topics in the news or in Group pop culture – whether its recent controversies or political events, we want to hear your opinion and for you to hear others’ views.
This is a club for those enjoy watching movies and are willing to analyse and discuss different movie trailers, as well as other news in the movie world. Also, students can talk about their favourite movies and share some of their favourite scenes of all time. All whilst doing tasks and creative activities involving movie scenes, actors and other aspects of the film. Another part, Film Club of the club is the possibility of creating your own short movie to share with the rest of the group, to show off your skills in film making and inspire you to be more creative and able to think of new imaginative story ideas. This club is perfect if you’re considering taking film studies whilst at college, but also gives those who didn’t take the subject the chance to get experience in something similar. Are you interested in learning a vibrant, living language that you can use on four continents of the world? Then come along to French for Beginners where we’ll be starting from scratch in a casual and constructive environment on the French for basics of French. You can expect weekly focuses on cities, holiday vocabulary, Beginners greetings, food and grammar among others. On top of this, we’ll partake in frequent quizzes and group competitions where prizes will be won. Sounding good? Apply now and take the first step to a whole new world of culture. Do you like Kpop? Pop on down to the ‘Korean for Beginners’ Beginners enrichment and follow the course in place dedicated to allow you to reach conversational Korean (following the Talk To Me In Korean curriculum). Are you a KPOP fan? Or looking for a new hobby? Do you want a place to make new friends with similar interests and time to relax from college work? If yes, then come along to our club! It will be a place where you can learn more about K-POP the music genre, talk about your favourite groups, and recommend loved music videos! We hope to make this a time in your week where you can forget about the stresses of college and enjoy chatting to people. Bonjour! Salve! Hola! Ciao! Guten Tag! Are you interested in the fascinating world of languages, whether that be the culture, the history, the science behind the words or the food? Then the Languages and Languages and Linguistics Society is for you; we will be looking at a wide range Linguistics Society of languages and cultures, exploring their history, links and diet! Come along if you want a taste of both language (and the food!) and linguistics, an intriguing subject that isn’t covered at A Level which looks at the science and history behind what makes language. We (the leaders) have experience in French, Latin, Italian, German and a wee bit o Spanish. Should abortion be legalised? Is the death penalty ever okay? Should life sentences actually be for life? These are just some of the questions that we will discuss in the Law Society. If you have an interest in our legal system and the fundamental way we categorise morality in our country sign up to join our Law Society. Here you will be able to discuss your opinions on the laws in our Law Society country with like-minded people, all whilst broadening your knowledge and enhancing your skills such as communication and public speaking. Welcome to the LGBT+ society! We’re offering you a safe, relaxed and informal space where you are able to be your true selves and express your true identities without any judgement, as well as have the opportunity to learn more about the community and others’ identities. There are no entry requirements, whether you’re part of the community or are an ally, you are more than welcome to join! (But, of course, we will accept no kind of discrimination from anyone.) LGBT+ As well as educating you on LGBT+ matters, we will also be inviting open discussion, and offering you the opportunity to teach us about what you know too. We would never dream of teaching you about your own identities unless you want us to research something for you; we will try our best to educate ourselves if we haven’t already, but if you have ANYTHING to add, please do! We will also be here to offer you any help or support you need at any time We look forward to meeting you all when you join, and we will greet you with some free pizza when you do. Weekly Workshops will take place to help prepare for the National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT). The LNAT is used by universities to select people for their undergraduate law courses. It doesn’t test your knowledge of law or any other subject. Instead, it helps universities assess your aptitude for the skills required to study law. The following universities require you pass LNAT – Year 13 the LNAT before an offer is made: Bristol; Durham; Glasgow, Nottingham, only Oxford, Kings College London; University College London, SOAS. If you wish to (Staff Led) study Law at any of the above Universities, attendance at the LNAT workshops is advisable. Sessions are due to run Tuesday lunchtimes – times TBC. If you’re a fan of anything Marvel, whether it’s the films, the comics or the TV series, why not think about joining this group. It will be a place for people with shared interests, possibly people still devastated by what happened in Endgame, to come together and share what Marvel they love. To take part in discussions and a range of activities centred on all things Marvel. So if you want to spend some time with other Marvel fans and have some fun, join this club! We can promise it won’t be boring! This will be a group based around the discussion and debate of ethical issues pertaining to medicine. The topics we will discuss include euthanasia, abortion, and gender reassignment medicine, focusing on Tavistock gender clinic. As these are difficult and touchy subjects we will be imposing the normal rules of Medical Ethics debate, and will expect everyone to have an adult mentality. However this will not be a sombre and stern group. We will make these discussions interesting and varied. This is a group perfect for those interested in medicine and in current events! Medicine is a difficult and competitive field, but you probably already knew that, so why not get as much help as you can? This enrichment is designed to help you through College to transition into medicine at University as smoothly as possible. The enrichment will include Medicine Society sessions that cover entrance exams, support with UCAS applications as well as a MOCK interview. We’ll also provide as much support as we can in regard to college work, work experience or anything else that you need. By choosing this enrichment you will also be automatically enrolled on to the medicine pathway. Feeling stressed? If you’re looking for an enrichment, where you can make the time for yourself, Mind Time make friends and relax. Then MIND TIME is the place for you. Over this enrichment course we will aim to make you aware of the importance of your mental health, explore new calming techniques and share with others a wide range of tips from revision to self-love. Mind time is your time! Some activities are audition only. Music and non-music students alike are welcome to take part in the wide range of musical activities on offer. Choir, Music Chamber Choir, Orchestra, String Orchestra, Wind Band, Yr12 and Yr13 bands. (Staff Led) The larger ensembles are timetabled into the college day. For more information please email tom.pankhurst@kedst.ac.uk Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into beautiful creations, from a flower, to a swan or dragon but whatever you make the goal is to transform a flat square sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and Origami sculpting techniques. In this enrichment we will progressively develop our paper creations to relax after the stresses of college. You don’t need any skill or practice of origami or any sort of art, you just need to bring yourself and have a go. The course will take people through the underpinning of programming which Python is logic and problem solving. Starting with thinking through problems in plain Programming English. By learning the skills this course will offer it allows students to break any problem down into smaller solvable steps which will have wide reaching applications for many subjects. Have you ever considered expanding your horizon further than just the UK? With Spanish currently the second most spoken language in the world, this course will certainly guide you in the right direction. Whether you’ve previously studied Spanish at GCSE, or you’re a complete beginner, this programme will encourage you to develop both your language ability and your Spanish for understanding of Hispanic life and culture, all while boosting your confidence, Beginners communication skills, and cognitive function. Throughout the 20-week course, we will cover everything from introducing yourself to booking a hotel room – it’s not all quizzes and textbooks! The practical and academic applications that Spanish for Beginners will offer are both educational and exciting, but above all, skills that will benefit you for the rest of your life.
This enrichment will be used to relax, draw and socialise with classmates (or even make new friends!). We invite you to take part in a mentally relaxing activity where you will draw Therapeutic your stresses away. It will allow you to wind-down from the busy life of Drawing college and indulge in self-care! College is a stressful time and it’s important to learn simple tips and tricks to calm a busy mind. You will leave the enrichment much calmer and far more appreciative of the simple act of drawing. If you’re someone who enjoys hearing true stories of gruesome murders or unexpected disappearances, then our enrichment is for you. Inspired by 2018-19’s Conspiracy Theories Club, we like to share our opinions and discuss crimes and theories that have been left unsolved: we would love to hear your ideas. We want to give you an insight into some of the world’s worst True Crimes and criminals and fascinating urban legends through research, videos and a Unsolved Kahoot each time we are finished talking about a theory. Mysteries Our club is useful for students aspiring to apply for a degree in Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Forensics etc… as attending these sessions proves to university staff or employers that you are passionate about your chosen subject and have a real interest in joining their programme. True Crimes and Unsolved Mysteries is a step towards your end goals.
