WELCOME TO RESIDENCE You’ve been formally accepted to St. Thomas University, and I’d like to welcome you to your new home — STU Residence. You’re about to embark on an amazing adventure but the transition to university is a big change. Living in residence will make that change a lot easier: you’ll make lasting con- nections with new friends, develop a network of peers going through the same things, and receive support and guidance from our excep- tional staff. This guide is a resource for you (and your family) as you prepare for the big move. We can’t wait to meet you and welcome you to your new home! MOVE-IN DAY FIRST YEAR STUDENTS Friday Aug. 30, 2019 11 am - 4 pm RETURNING STUDENTS Monday Sept. 2, 2019 11 am - 4 pm STEP 1: GETTING HERE • Please use the following addresses for your GPS or taxi drivers: • Rigby Hall: 368 Forest Hill Road, Fredericton NB, E3B 5G3 • Vanier Hall, Harrington Hall, Holy Cross House, Windsor Street: 51 Dineen Drive, Fredericton NB, E3B 5G3 STEP 2: CHECK-IN • Residents can pick up room keys from the Check-In tables located outside their residence building • Students must have a form of government-issued photo identification to check-in STEP 3: UNLOADING • Welcome Week leaders will direct traffic to the appropriate unloading zones in each parking lot • Volunteers will help unload vehicles and move belongings to your residence room • One person must stay with the vehicle and the vehicle must be moved immediately once it is unloaded. You will be directed by staff to park in nearby lots. • You are NOT permitted to park in the unloading zone. STEP 4: MOVE-IN DAY OVERVIEW 11 am - 4 pm Check-In 4 pm - 10 pm Late Check-In. Please go to the Welcome Booth in Sir James Dunn Hall. Students arriving after 10 pm must find alternate accommodations for the night and check- in the next day during regular office hours. 4 pm - 8 pm Welcome Week Kick-Off Activities 8 pm - 10 pm Cheer-Off
FOR STUDENTS Residence is more than just a place to live – it’s a place to meet new people, have new experiences, learn and have fun! We want you to feel comfortable in your new home and know all about the resources and supports STU has waiting for you! RESIDENCE LIFE STAFF There are different student leaders that live in your building that will provide resources, support and events throughout the academic year. There is a Residence Coordinator (RC) in each building, Resi- dence Advisors (RAs) for each wing and House Committee (HC) members that live in each building. Residence supervisors are full-time university staff in charge of fostering a positive living environ- ment and promoting academic and personal development for you and your fellow residents. Their responsibilities include policy/procedure administration, crisis intervention, student staff supervi- sion, programming facilitation and direction, and student leader mentoring. They also live in our residence buildings so they are available for questions and concerns! Students can visit the Residence Life Office (GMH 303) between 8:30 am-4:30 pm, Monday to Friday for any questions or concerns. WELCOME WEEK 2019 From Friday August 30th until Saturday September 7th, student staff, professional staff and volun- teers from across campus will be providing daily activities, events, workshops and off campus adven- tures to acquaint you with your new home! FOR SUPPORTERS We understand that family, friends and loved ones are a big part of the university experience and transition into residence. We want your student to be successful just as much as you do! Together we can work to ensure your student is supported while building their sense of independence. Our team provides a variety of services to ensure all areas of growth are supported. To learn more about the services your student will be able to access during their time with us, please visit: https://www.stu.ca/parents/ KEEPING IN TOUCH • It is important to have a discussion with your student prior to move-in on the best ways to communicate with one another and expectations around frequency of communication. Some families schedule out daily/weekly phone calls, chat throughout the day, text, etc. • Decide what works best for you! It’s important to remember this may also change as students get busy with academics and friends. • While we have multiple residence buildings, all mail/packages sent to students must be addressed as follows: Student’s Full Name Room #, Residence Building St. Thomas University 51 Dineen Dr. Fredericton, NB E3B 5G3 INQUIRIES AND CONFIDENTIALITY We encourage you to discuss any questions or concerns you have regarding your student with the student first. The Residence Life Office is bound by the Right To Information and Protection of Privacy Act and cannot release any information or discuss a student with a parent and/or guardian without the written permission of the student. The Residence Life Office will not contact or discuss with a parent/guardian a student’s disciplinary status, lifestyle choices and/or roommate situation. All communication from our office will be directly with students and important updates will be sent to their STU email address. WHAT WE CAN DO: • Provide general information regarding campus services and resources • Contact and support a student if there is concern about their wellness or safety • Contact the provided emergency contact if an emergency occurs WHAT WE CAN NOT DO: • Release personal information of a student (room number, residence building, contact information) • Release roommate information • Respond to inquiries regarding location/activities of a student
YOUR UCARD WHAT IS IT? Your UCard goes beyond just being your student identification card and can be used all over campus! You use your UCard to access your meal plan, Student Health Services, library services, secure areas, gym facilities, printing, entrance to events, discounts and more! HOW DO I GET MY UCARD? Please submit your photo online no later than Monday August 19th to ensure your UCard is waiting for you when you arrive on move-in day! Please visit https://www.unb.ca/ucard/photoupload.html and select St. Thomas University. Reminder: you will need to provide government issued photo identification to receive your UCard. DINING SERVICES YOUR MEAL PLAN St. Thomas University offers All You Care To Eat Dining at the George Martin and Forest Hill Dining Halls. All You Care To Eat meal plans mean that once you have swiped yourself into the dining hall with you student ID/meal card, you are able to enjoy as much or as little food as you wish without worrying about the costs of individual items. CAN I CHANGE MY MEAL PLAN? Residence students have three options for their on-campus meal plans: The Freedom Plan, The 14-Meal Plan and The 10-Meal Plan. We encourage students to choose the meal plan that best suits their lifestyle and eating habits. Meal plan sizes can be increased or decreased up until October 13, 2019 by emailing residencelife@stu.ca . WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE? For more information on specific hours, locations and menu items, please visit the Dining Services website: https://stuca.campusdish.com/. PARKING PASSES DO I NEED A PARKING PASS? Permits are required to park your vehicle on STU campus from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday. WHERE DO I (AND MY GUESTS) GET PARKING PASSES? Students can obtain their pass in person at the Security Office in the Campus Operations Building, 767 Kings College Road (8:00 am-3:30 pm). Visitor parking passes are required for guests and can also be purchased through the Security Office. Permit holders will be notified throughout the year of parking lot closures and requests to move vehicles due to inclement weather conditions/required snow plowing.
