TU Dublin Research Scholarship Programme 2020 Introduction ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) invites applications for the Research Scholarship Programme 2020, the purpose of which is to promote the exploration and application of knowledge. The Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and research proposals should be aligned with the TU Dublin research areas: Environment, Energy and Health Information, Communications and Media Technologies New Materials and Devices Society, Culture and Enterprise Awards will be made on the basis of excellence and subject to funding being available and TU Dublin reserves the right not to award all scholarships. Awards will be reviewed and renewed annually, based on successful completion of annual evaluation by the graduate research student. Students on the scholarship programme will attend modules associated with the research programme approved by TU Dublin. In line with international practice to ensure wider dissemination of research to maximise its visibility, accessibility and scientific impact for society and the economy, TU Dublin supports free online open access to this body of work. Accordingly, TU Dublin requires self-archiving of research results by each researcher via the University repository, Arrow. 3
TU Dublin Scholarship Programmes Terms and Conditions ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ The following Terms and Conditions will apply to your scholarship in addition to any other Terms and Conditions from your funder: 1. The current edition of the TU Dublin Graduate Research Regulations will apply to all PhD students in receipt of scholarship support from TU Dublin. 2. Research students in receipt of funding must engage in all aspects of the research programme including the training elements. 3. Research students in receipt of a full stipend cannot receive any additional stipend supports. 4. Research students in receipt of funding must reside within Ireland for the duration of their studies. They must maintain an actual presence within their respective departments/schools for the duration of their scholarship and reside within a reasonable travelling distance of the HEI. 5. Travel to conferences and short-term visits to other research organisations are encouraged but cannot exceed 3 months duration in a given year. 6. TU Dublin will appoint at least one academic supervisor from its full-time or pro-rata cohort of staff who will hold a qualification equivalent to, or higher than, the award being sought. 7. At least one of the academic supervisors must have previously supervised a student to completion for a qualification equivalent to or higher than the award being sought. 4
8. At least one of the academic supervisors must have a contract of employment with TU Dublin that extends beyond the thesis submission date of the student. 9. All new supervisors (i.e. those who have not previously supervised a research student to successful completion at the level of the award being sought) must within 12 months of the student’s first registration undertake the Licence to Supervise course offered by the Graduate Research School Office. A suitably experienced advisory supervisor must also be appointed. 10. If appropriate, a research agreement including arrangements for intellectual property and confidentiality must be negotiated in advance of student registration. The TU Dublin Technology Transfer Office can provide advice on IP policies and procedures. 11. All proposed publications arising from the project must have the approval of the academic supervisor. 12. In so far as it is feasible, all publications must be lodged in TU Dublin’s institutional repository ARROW. 13. TU Dublin reserves the right to suspend or terminate any scholarship and/or require reimbursement by the student of some or all payments if any of the terms and conditions as outlined here or any of the regulations of TU Dublin are breached. 14. All offers of awards must be accepted and students registered within 2 months of the offer being made and awards are not transferrable. 15. Non-EEA students must comply with all immigration regulations as determined by the Department of Justice and Law Reform. 5
16. Research students in receipt of funding must engage full-time in research. Although teaching, and other work, is considered a valuable experience, it should not exceed a total of 4 hours per week. 17. All project expenditure by research students and their supervisors must comply with TU Dublin financial policies and if relevant, policies of other funding agencies. Suppliers must be on the approved list of TU Dublin suppliers. 18. Only vouched expenses incurred in carrying out the research project during the agreed funding term are permissible and all claims must be submitted in a timely fashion. Students must have advance approval of supervisors for all expenditure. 19. Expenses may include: • project materials and consumables; • project equipment; • software and hardware critical for the proposed research; • a maximum limit of €1,000 for computers or laptops applies unless required for high- performance computing and all must be in line with TU Dublin IT procurement policy; • pay-as-you-go access to national research infrastructures; • archival research costs; • reasonable and vouched travel (use of own car without prior approval of the Head of the Graduate Research School and first class or business travel will not be considered) • reasonable and vouched hotel costs • reasonable and vouched subsistence (all subsistence must be vouched and per diems will not be considered.) Subsistence claims cannot exceed and must be in line with Government rates. • registration costs for conferences/workshops/meetings directly related to the award; • normal (not emergency/express) visa costs for travel to conferences/research events; • skills training directly related to the objective(s) of the award; • publishing and write-up costs, excluding proof-reading costs; and • reasonable travel and refreshment costs for subjects and volunteers in studies 6
Expenses cannot include: • living costs (e.g. rent). • Study visa costs for Non-EU students (unless funding agency permits payment • a per diem rate for conferences/workshops/meetings • incentives such as cash or gift vouchers for subjects and volunteers in studies • secretarial costs eg cost of interview transcription, proof-reading etc • payments to any 3rd party apart from reasonable travel and refreshment costs for subjects and volunteers in studies • use of own car, without prior approval of the Head of the Graduate Research School • first class or business travel • alcohol 7
OPPORTUNITIES FOR PhD STUDENT APPLICANTS 8
1. TU Dublin Research Scholar Award ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ The TU Dublin Research Scholar Award recognises the outstanding achievement by individual students and is only open to talented students who wish to pursue a PhD at TU Dublin on a Full Time basis. Applications are invited from students of any higher education institution, in Ireland or internationally, who have previously submitted an application to the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship 2020 Programme of the Irish Research Council (IRC). _____________________________________________________________________________________ DETAILS OF THE SCHEME _____________________________________________________________________________________ Successful candidates will be known as a TU Dublin Research Scholar, and will be paid a stipend of €16,000 and €2,000 project costs, for each of the four years. Project costs will include eligible direct research expenses to enable the Scholar to carry out the research project, including essential research supplies such as small consumables. The full list is given in the terms and conditions of the award. Funding is available up to a maximum of 4 years, and will be paid annually, based on successful completion of the annual assessment. A maximum of 12 scholarships will be awarded across TU Dublin. The university reserves the right to award as many of the twelve as appropriate. Applicants should have already submitted an application to the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship 2020 Programme organised by the Irish Research Council. 9
_______________________________________________________________________________________ APPLICATION PROCESS _______________________________________________________________________________________ Applicants should submit a copy of the proposal previously submitted to the Irish Research Council (IRC) for the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship 2020 Programme. The proposal should be sent as a PDF file to research.scholarship@tudublin.ie by 12 noon (GMT), May 29th 2020. The subject line of the email must read “GRS - 2020”. All applications received will be acknowledged by email within two working days. If no acknowledgement is received, the applicant is advised to contact research.scholarship@tudublin.ie. Subsequent to application, if a scholarship offer is made by the IRC, the applicant must accept the IRC offer, relinquishing the TU Dublin award. Applicants will be contacted to submit a copy of the marks and feedback obtained from the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship 2020 Programme, when these are available. Applicants who previously submitted a proposal to the IRC to work in another Irish Institution should also submit a letter from the original proposed supervisor confirming support for an application to TU Dublin. This letter must provide confirmation that there are no intellectual property issues in moving to TU Dublin. Such applicants must identify a supervisor from TU Dublin for the duration of their work. Candidates must have obtained a primary degree classification equivalent to Upper Second Class Honours (2.1) or higher, from an approved University or an approved equivalent degree-awarding body, or have an approved equivalent professional qualification in an area cognate to the proposed research topic. An applicant, whose native language is not English, must also display an adequate proficiency in the English language, obtained within the 24 month period prior to application. The minimum level required is 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System or equivalent for the overall average score and a score not lower than 5.5 in each category. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ASSESSMENT _______________________________________________________________________________________ 10
Each proposal, including the marks and feedback obtained from the IRC, will be assessed and ranked. To be eligible for funding, applicants must achieve a threshold of at least 60% of the total marks available and, for each criterion, must achieve at least half of the available marks. Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application by email at the end of July 2020. As such, it is important to ensure that the email address provided for correspondence is accurate and current. Late applications will not be accepted. Offers will be withdrawn if: • The candidate is not available by the start date; • There is any canvassing on behalf of the applicant; • The registration is not endorsed by the Head of School. 11
OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUPERVISOR APPLICANTS 12
2. First-Time Supervisor Award _____________________________________________________________________________________ The First Time Supervisor Award is an initiative dedicated to TU Dublin staff who are new (or returning) to PhD or Masters supervision. The purpose of the award scheme is to encourage academic staff to become involved in graduate research supervision and to contribute to the University’s research mission. _____________________________________________________________________________________ DETAILS OF THE SCHEME _____________________________________________________________________________________ Applications are invited from all full-time and pro-rata staff who are new or returning to graduate research supervision i.e. have not supervised a graduate research student to completion in the last 10 years or are not currently supervising or recruiting a graduate research student. This includes being part of a supervisory team. Staff must hold a qualification to the level of the award being sought and have a contract of employment with TU Dublin that extends beyond the proposed thesis submission date. Each award will provide a scholarship to support a full-time graduate research student and include a stipend of €16,000 and €2,000 for project costs. Funding is available for supervision of full-time students up to a maximum of 4 years for PhD students and 2 years for Masters students, and will be paid annually, based upon successful completion of the annual assessment by the student. There will be a maximum of 5 awards with the university reserving the right to award as many of the five as appropriate. 13
_____________________________________________________________________________________ APPLICATION PROCESS First time supervisors are encouraged to work within one of the TU Dublin Research Centres and/or Research Institutes. An advisory supervisor must be proposed and projects should be aligned with the TU Dublin research areas: Environment, Energy and Health Information, Communications and Media Technologies New Materials and Devices Society, Culture and Enterprise The First Time Supervisor Application Form should be completed and sent as a PDF file to research.scholarship@tudublin.ie by 12 noon (GMT), May 29th 2020. Evidence of having a contract of employment with TU Dublin that extends beyond the end date of the student should be attached to the application. Such evidence can include a copy of the contract or notification from Human Resources. The subject line of the email must read “FTS - 2020”. All received applications will be acknowledged by email within two working days. If no acknowledgement is received, the applicant is advised to contact research.scholarship@tudublin.ie. ______________________________________________________________________________________ ASSESSMENT _____________________________________________________________________________________ Applications from suitably qualified staff of TU Dublin will be assessed and ranked based on the following criteria: • Quality of the proposed research and contribution to knowledge: 25% Quality of the research project including o Clarity and coherence of the proposed research project o Quality, including research methodology, and consideration of ethical and sex/gender issues and the limitations of the approach to be adopted 14
o Feasibility and credibility of the proposed research plan in the proposed time period o Originality and innovative nature • Strategic Alignment 25 % Applications should demonstrate alignment to relevant International, National or University policies such as UN Sustainable Development Goals or Innovation 2020 or TU Dublin Research Areas. • Contribution to TU Dublin and National research capacity and capability: 25% Capacity could be seen as referring to the physical space or infrastructure required to carry out leading edge research whereas Capability could refer to the human capital and soft infrastructure needed to enable research projects to take place. • Dissemination Plans and Impact 25% Plans on how the results of the project will be disseminated and the potential impact of the research nationally and internationally. Evidence of real thought as to why research is to be undertaken and the impact of the proposed research. To be eligible for funding, applicants must achieve a threshold of at least 60% of the total marks available and, for each criterion, must achieve at least half of the available marks. Applicants will be awarded funding on the basis of their scores. Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application by email by the end of July 2020. 15
3. Researcher Award _____________________________________________________________________________________ The Researcher Award recognises the contribution to TU Dublin research by individual researchers and the purpose of the award scheme is • To recognise, encourage and reward TU Dublin members of academic staff for their contribution to research; • To affirm the commitment of TU Dublin to research. _____________________________________________________________________________________ DETAILS OF THE SCHEME _____________________________________________________________________________________ Applications are invited from all full-time and pro-rata staff researchers at TU Dublin. Staff must hold a PhD qualification and have a contract of employment with TU Dublin that extends beyond the proposed thesis submission date. Each award will provide a scholarship to support a full-time PhD student and include a stipend of €16,000 and €2,000 for project costs, for each of four years. Funding is available up to a maximum of 4 years, and will be paid annually, based upon successful completion of the annual assessment by the PhD student. There will be a maximum of 10 awards with the university reserving the right to award as many of the ten as appropriate. All researchers at TU Dublin are eligible to apply for this award. 16

TU Dublin President’s Award _____________________________________________________________________________________ The TU Dublin President’s Award is the most prestigious research award made by the University and recognizes excellence in research by individual researchers, who have a strong track record in research. The purpose of the award scheme is • To recognise, encourage and reward members of academic staff for their contribution to research; • To affirm the commitment of Technological University Dublin to research. _____________________________________________________________________________________ DETAILS OF THE SCHEME _____________________________________________________________________________________ There will be 1 award available across TU Dublin in any one year. The award will provide a scholarship to support a full-time PhD student and includes a stipend of €16,000 and €2,000 for project costs, for each of the four years. 5. TU Dublin Business Partners Scholarship Co-fund (Full-time) _____________________________________________________________________________________ The TU Dublin Business Partners Scholarship Co-fund is an initiative by which TU Dublin researchers can partner with external, non HE organisations to co-fund postgraduate scholarships. Business partners should be considered broadly, and include private enterprise and public bodies in all disciplines 1. Scholarships are available for both Masters level study (2 years full-time) and Doctoral level study (4 years full-time). The Scheme offers researchers the opportunity to gain valuable, industry-based experience while completing their research on a project that is use-inspired. The Scheme provides industry with the opportunity to build links with relevant TU Dublin research groups and access to high-calibre researchers. The Scheme facilitates the establishment of new relationships and the strengthening of existing ones between enterprise and academia while offering financial support to researchers at an early stage of their career development. TU Dublin researchers and Business partner(s) will collectively: • Identify the research problem/question of prime interest to the enterprise involved; • Design a research programme to address this question; • Agree intellectual property arrangements. The research programme must: • Pursue useful knowledge, underpinned by rigorous processes of discovery and critical enquiry; • Translate the research into innovative technologies, interventions or policies to drive Ireland’s economic growth and/or have societal impact; • Build institutional and national research capacity and capability. 1 Can include but is not restricted to: Government agencies, national and international public and private companies, non-governmental organisations, community associations. 22

Each award will include a Full Time student stipend of €16,000, registration fees of up to €4,500 and €2,000 for project costs, for each of the two years for a Masters or each of the four years for PhD. All students will be recruited through open public competition and funding approval is required before public recruitment of the research student may commence. Recruitment of candidates for the approved project must be in line with the Graduate Research Regulations. 2 Awards will be made on the basis of excellence and subject to funding being available. TU Dublin Business Partners Part Time Fee Scheme _____________________________________________________________________________________ The TU Dublin Business Partners Part-time Fee Scheme is an initiative by which employees of TU Dublin Business Partners can register, on a part-time basis, to undertake research for an award of Masters or PhD. Researchers can partner with external, non HE organisations to co-fund postgraduate scholarships. Business partners should be considered broadly, and include private enterprise and public bodies in all disciplines 4. Scholarships are available to cover the fee for both Masters level study (3 years part-time) and Doctoral level study (6 years part-time). Written confirmation of partnership funding for the duration of the research programme (3 years for MPhil or 6 years for PhD) should be included with the application. _____________________________________________________________________________________ ASSESSMENT _____________________________________________________________________________________ Applications will be assessed and ranked based on the following criteria: • Quality of the proposed research and contribution to knowledge: 25% Quality of the research project including o Clarity and coherence of the proposed research project o Quality, including research methodology, and consideration of ethical and sex/gender issues and the limitations of the approach to be adopted o Feasibility and credibility of the proposed research plan in the proposed time period o Originality and innovative nature • Strategic Alignment 25 % Applications should demonstrate alignment to relevant International, National or University policies such as UN Sustainable Development Goals or Innovation 2020 or TU Dublin Research Areas. • Contribution to TU Dublin and national research capacity and capability building strategy: 25% Capacity could be seen as referring to the physical space or infrastructure required to carry out leading edge research whereas Capability could refer to the human capital and soft infrastructure needed to enable research projects to take place. • Dissemination Plans and Impact 25% Plans on how the results of the project will be disseminated and the potential impact of the research nationally and internationally. Evidence of real thought as to why research is to be undertaken and the impact of the proposed research. To be eligible for funding, applicants must achieve a threshold of at least 60% of the total marks available and, for each criterion, must achieve at least half of the available marks. Applicants will be awarded funding on the basis of their scores. 28
_______________________________________________________________________________________ RESULTS _______________________________________________________________________________________ Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application by return email at the end of July. As such, it is important to ensure that the email address provided for correspondence is accurate and current. Late applications will not be accepted. Offers are only valid up to the proposed date of registration. Offers will be withdrawn if: • The candidate is not available by the start date; • There is any canvassing on behalf of the applicant; • The registration is not endorsed by the Head of School. 29
