Green Reading Each month we’ll offer our suggestions from the pantheon of excellent writing on and about our favorite pastime One of my favorite daily golf reads (and listens) is Andy Johnson’s TheFriedEgg.com, a website about golf that is mostly dedicated to golf course architecture and in-depth golf course reviews. It is here that I found out about two of my favorite golf courses (Lawsonia Golf Links and Spring Valley Country Club) and started learning some of the ins and outs of course design. If you have any interest in course layout (and if you are a member at HVGC you should because we have a great one!) then The Fried Egg is a wonderful resource. They have in-depth videos of most course hosting majors, deep dive interviews with architects and superintendents, and two introductions to golf course architecture (Golf Course 101 and School of Golf Architecture) that can help bring you up to speed. One of my favorite features is their “Bang for Your Buck” guides which are “a guide to affordable and architecturally interesting golf courses in X location.” It’s how I decided to play the two courses I named above and is a key resource as I plan a fall trip (oh no it’s already October?!) to Michigan to explore some Mike DeVries courses. I would be remiss if I failed to mention that Andy also hosts the best podcast focused on professional golf, The Shotgun Start, a thrice weekly rundown of all things pro golf. Definitely worth a listen. 22
