Director’s Notes Welcome to the 9th Annual Celebration of Dance! Tonight’s stage is shared by 11 different studios from around Central Florida. This event, lovingly called COD, was originally started by the Dr. Phillips High School Dance Encore Ensemble Parent Group, headed by Doug and Lynn Nawrath, with the goal of raising funds for the Dance Magnet through the spirit of community and collaboration. We thank our current COD Chair, Alexa Rossi, and our Encore group of parents for all their hard work continuing this effort. Tomorrow, teachers will gather for a “Teacher’s Summit” with our COD master teachers, Layla Amis, Director of Modas, Nick Gonzalez, Director of The Nexxt Move and Holly Johnston with Ledges & Bones, while performers take a fun warm-up Boot camp with Letitia Rossi before taking master classes in Ballet, Contemporary and Hip Hop! We thank all our COD teachers for their fabulous classes and contribution to dance education, and we thank all the participating teachers and students who inspire all of us with their passion for dance! A new add-on this year is expanding the Modas opportunity to Saturday afternoon and Sunday for workshops and auditions with recruiters for colleges & summer intensives. We are thrilled that all COD participants receive half price for this amazing opportunity. Walk-ins are welcome at the door! One of the benefits of your participation with Celebration of Dance has been the ability for the DPHS Dance Magnet to continue our annual week-long residency in September with Jon Lehrer Dance, under the direction of Jon Lehrer. Not only does Jon’s company work with the DPHS Magnet students during the week, but we are able to provide the community with two master classes, a community Lehrer Rep piece, and a full length Lehrer Dance performance! Save the dates: Performance, September 19, 2020, 7:30 PM and Master Classes September 16 & 18, 2020, 6 – 8 PM, and the Lehrer Rep Class September 17, 2020, 6-9 PM. Dr. Phillips High School requests your formal theatre etiquette. Please, refrain from eating or drinking in the theatre and be sure to turn your cell phones off. Also, please wait to stand, sit, or move during performances as there will be filming from the back of the house. We want to ensure dancer safety, beautiful videos & photography, and an enjoyable experience for all audience members. Thank you for coming and supporting dance ~ we think you’ll love it. ENJOY!!!
