Steve Laredo of East West Bank, former Houston Rocket and Hall of Famer, Clyde Drexler, along with Rocket Guard Corey Brewer, stopped in to visit the school during a very special ceremony hosted by the Rockets and East West Bank. East West teamed up with the Rockets to provide a covered walkway for students. Harmony values every opportunity to work together with our community. Harmony School of Innovation - Euless launched a "Refurbished Learning" program to engage students in learning with an added layer of technology in the classroom. Over the past several months, HSI Euless has collected smartphones, iPods, and tablets from the community as part of their Smart Device Drive. Now, after weeks of preparation, the devices are in the hands of HSI's Gifted and Talented classes! HSI Euless hopes to integrate the program throughout the entire school in an on-going effort to provide STEM for all, a core value of Harmony Public Schools. Other findings from the publication show that female students are low represented in the engineering category of the competition. This is parallel with national data findings as well. I went to my interview with Mr. Ekren at an old Wal-Mart building while construction was being done to transformer the place into a school. I am sure you have heard it said many times, but there is truth in the saying Harmony is very dynamic...I have learned so much and have had the opportunity to work with so many amazing people, educators, students, and professionals in all areas of our system. I have been able to see first-hand how much work goes into each process and detail to ensure our students are successful. I have seen areas of deficit turn into areas of great achievement
and have come to realize it definitely takes a village to create success. My Favorite Teacher Memory Mrs. Trimball, Algebra 1 and 2 teacher at Judson High School. She never gave up on me. She was always willing to help me, at lunch, afterschool, during study hall. It didn't always make sense, but she always encouraged me and during my college experience it all just clicked. Fun Fact About Me I really like the Just Dance video games for the Wii and the X-Box 1. My daughter and I can dance for hours. My Favorite Food & Place to Travel My favorite food is Fried Rice with Chicken no Egg from my favorite restaurant Golden Wok in San Antonio. It is amazing and needs nothing but a spoon. I don't like to drop any rice so forks and chops stick don't work for me. My favorite place to travel is anywhere with my family. We haven't been too many places outside of Texas, but whenever my husband and kids load up in the car, I know I am about to laugh so hard I will cry, and that I will come home more in love with my husband and kids than when I left. Sometimes you have to get away to remember the great things about the ones closest to you. My Favorite Quote "The arts are an essential element of education, just like reading, writing, and arithmetic...music, dance, painting, and theater are all keys that unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment." -William Bennett, Former US Secretary of Education To read the entire interview, please click here! Faces of Harmony Alumni Charlie Lincoln, Class of 2010 Harvard University, A.L.B. in Government Currently Enrolled: Texas A&M University School of Law When did you attend Harmony Public Schools? I attended Harmony in Austin for six years from grade 6 until I graduated high school in 2010. What was something that stood out to you about Harmony? Harmony was really diverse, both in student and teacher population, which is one of the best things about the schools. Many people think Harmony focuses only on math and science, they are shocked to hear that we had a lot of good teachers in all subjects. Besides curriculum, I went on 3 European trips with Harmony. We went to Holland, Belgium, France, and Turkey. You hear of other schools perhaps going on a trip to one country, but not four. Who was your favorite teacher? I had a lot of favorite teachers. Mr. Beyhan, Mr. Duman, Mr. Iskandar, Mr. Kaya, Mr. Foster, Ms. Clifford, Mr. Camuz, Mr. Toycu, Mr. Erdogdu, Mr. Avsar, just to name a few. I don't want to leave anyone out, or have them think I forgot about them. They were all so great.
Mr. Camuz met me in Istanbul when I was there for a school trip in 2004, he's a great guy. Mr. Iskandar visited me twice in undergrad and told me he was going to visit me in law school, too. Mr. Duman and several other teachers used to come visit us at our home. Of course, in the classroom they had to lay down the law, but I consider them my friends now. Any advice for current/future Harmony Students? Work hard, be inquisitive, and learn as much as you can. Be trustworthy and kind to other people. People can be really helpful, but don't help them just to get something in return. Just be as nice as you can to other people. It is the right thing to do. Featuring an interesting historical event in science February 2 In 1995, news of research linking brain structure and artistic talent was released by Dr. Gottfried Schaug at a press conference in Washington. Dr Gottfried Schlaug announced the work of his team of researchers at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Mass. Persons with perfect pitch were found to have a region in the left hemisphere of the brain, the plenum temporale, to be enlarged. However, it was also necessary that to have perfect pitch, a person must be exposed to music before the age of 10. Without that, having an enlarged plenum temporale does not of itself normally coincide with having perfect pitch later. To learn more about science history events in the month of February click here.
