Excellence in Classroom Teaching: Sharing best pedagogical practice A Conference for Primary and Secondary Teachers Guildford Grammar School Saturday 15 September 2018, 8.00am-4.30pm $150 for teachers, $100 for practicum teachers
Guildford Grammar School is hosting its fourth one-day Excellence in Classroom Teaching conference, for Primary and Secondary School teachers, as well as people training to be teachers. Perth teachers are often frustrated by the lack of opportunities to enjoy good quality professional development focusing on sound classroom practice which they can use immediately with their own students. To fill this gap, our conference presents a wide range of relevant workshops, sharing strategies and resources that can be taken back and used immediately in your classroom. Each delegate will have the opportunity to participate in four workshops of their choice, from those outlined below. Popular sessions will be held several times to ensure as many delegates as possible are able to attend the workshops of their choice. WORKSHOPS 1 Playing with Mr Pete Ashby You thought that matches were only useful for lighting fires. Not so! Matches Director of Outdoor This workshop is all about puzzles, games and lateral thinking using the Education humble match (having said that our giant matches are not so humble!). Workshops 3 & 4 Suitable for any age group. These activities can be used inside and Primary and outside the classroom, in fact, anywhere you can take a box of matches. Senior They are designed to stimulate students’ thinking and processing and are suited to both individuals and groups. Used up all the matches? No worries, Pete will also get you to safely light fires without matches. This too can be used with any age group as the Guildford Grammar School Year 1 students will attest. 2 Energising your Mrs Sarah Barnes Bring your laptop along to this interactive workshop which will introduce Maths class with Mathematics Teacher some of the capabilities of the free Desmos graphing calculator app and Desmos show how it can energise your Mathematics class. We start by learning the basics, create some artwork using actual mathematical equations and Workshop 4 then look at some of the ready to go lessons that students really enjoy. Primary & Senior There is a place for Desmos in every Mathematics class, whether you are extending high achieving students, or nurturing the mathematically challenged. 3 Art as therapy Ms Jayne Baayens This will be a practical session where you can experience the benefits of and relaxation School Counsellor art as therapy and relaxation as well as demonstrating how you can use art in the classroom to support student wellbeing. Workshop 3 Primary & Senior 4 A Maths Ms Nastassia Carter As an open-enrolment school, we work alongside students with various intervention that Mathematics Teacher learning difficulties and disabilities. This workshop will describe our Maths works intervention program, the resources we have used to support it and the results we have seen so far. Workshops 3 & 4 Primary & Senior 5 Teaching and Mr Rod Manson It doesn’t matter if you are in a laptop or a BYOD school, there are some Learning with Head of e-Learning common factors that will promote the enrichment and engagement Technology - of teaching and learning with technology in your classroom. There will some aspects be three pillars of success presented and will include; Bloom’s Digital worth Taxonomy, the SAMR Model and the TPACK model. You will also considering be challenged to consider your own personal view on the direction of education and how technology is having an influence on this direction. Workshops 1 & 2 Primary and Senior 6 24 strengths for Ms Katherine Cheng Psychology has (or had) the reputation for focusing on mental illness you and your School Counsellor rather than mental health, disease rather than wellness, the ‘abnormal’ students or what’s outside the norm rather than the ‘normal’ or the ordinary. This has changed and the work of psychologists including Martin Seligman, Workshops 1 & 2 Barbara Fredrickson, Sonja Lyubormirsky and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi Primary & Senior have focused (or re-focused) on flourishing, broadening and building, the ‘how’ of happiness and flow. (For the curious, these can also be used as search terms). Learn about 24 VIA (Values in Action) Core Strengths, your Top Strengths (as well as the ‘shadow’ side). Learn about ‘strengths- spotting’ (may share some characteristics with trainspotting, or not) and ‘24 ways’ to ‘see’ (‘re-view’) yourself, your students and other people you work with.
7 Prep Art Ms Laura Nichols Come along to this workshop to share ideas, tips and tricks to best Art Teacher utilise basic art materials in your classroom for maximum results. Workshops 3 & 4 Come along to see just how amazing the humble crayon can be! Primary and Senior 8 Bush Bling Mr Graham Lawson This workshop will involve participants using hand tools to make a Head of Catalyst simple piece of jewellery using bits of natural objects found in the Workshops 1 & 2 bush. We run this activity at our outdoor education camps and it is Primary & Senior always popular with students. Easy to organise, with little necessary equipment and links to many other areas of the curriculum (creative writing, technology, etc) you will be inspired to get this activity going with your students next week. 9 Adapting a growth Mr Taylor Colton Student ownership and creation are the foundations for facilitating mindset in the Year 6 Teacher a growth mindset. What does it look like in the classroom? How classroom can we provide an environment that is not only comfortable, but generates growth in all our students? Workshops 3 & 4 Primary & Senior 10 Documenting Early Mrs Jo MacLachlan In this workshop for teachers of our smallest learners, ELC specialists Learning and Ms Lynn Gass will share ideas on documenting learning. Taking a Reggio Emilia Early Learning approach means thinking about new ways of recording what has Workshops 1 & 2 Coordinator and been learnt whilst ensuring that the children also love their time at Early Learning Teachers school and develop their creative thinking skills. Maximum story-telling in the & Ethics Teacher, of 12 participants only. classroom Education Assistant Workshops 1 & 2 Primary & Senior 14 Brain breaks Mr Daniel Griffiths Brain Breaks are kinaesthetic thinking activities used to refocus Preparatory School students’ attention. This is a practical session exploring easy ideas, Workshops 1 & 2 Sportsmaster resources and apps to assist alertness and concentration in class. Primary & Senior 15 Gifted and Talented Mr Andrew Bacon Strategies to ensure that highly able students are challenged in Head of Academic your lessons. Applies to any subject and age groups from Year 5 Workshops 1 & 2 Talent Development upwards. Primary & Senior 16 The importance of Ms Janet Wilmot This workshop will look at the many and varied forms of feedback feedback Director of Pedagogy, teachers can use to inform and improve their practice. Primary & Senior 21 Use a DSLR camera Ms Emma Brown So you have a SLR camera but don’t know how to use in manual mode in Media Teacher the manual controls in different settings? Then this is different lighting the workshop for you. We will look at studio shoots, dark Rembrandt lighting as well as glossy product shots and Workshops 1 & 2 water balloon, fast shutter speed experiments. You can Primary & Senior bring your digital SLR camera with you or borrow one of ours. Maximum of 15 participants. 22 Why the classroom Miss Lara Bella This workshop will share ideas on how to enhance the environment matters Education Assistant learning environment in your classroom to enrich students’ experiences. It will include ways in which teachers can Workshops 1 & 2 improve the visual aspects of their classroom using readily Primary & Senior available, cheap materials to make the space attractive whilst supporting learning. The Conference will be held mainly in the School’s Thwaites Centre, which opened in 2013. There is plenty of parking around the campus; a map and detailed information will be sent to delegates prior to the conference. The School is located on Terrace Rd, Guildford, with the main entrance running off Great Eastern Highway. REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT The Conference costs $150 per qualified teacher and $100 for trainee teachers, which includes morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and networking drinks and nibbles at the conclusion of the day.
