Help me to show love to every one I interact with. Help me to connect with others, to respect everyone, and show myself to others with Christ-like love. Book Club and Chat Time Dear Parents, The impact of stage 4 is being felt by all of us in many ways. Our students have been telling us that they feel disconnected from one another and miss each other’s company from being onsite at school. To respond to this need we began trialling two exciting initiatives this week. These initiatives are designed to help support students in fun, safe and informal ways to connect with their peers. These initiatives are known as The Gathering and Online Book Community. Each level has the opportunity to participate once a week in both of these initiatives. The Gathering is for a level to gather and chat in a supervised and safe forum. There are minimal formal directions by staff, instead the conversation is based on whatever the students would like to discuss. Some of the topics covered have included students talking, studying from home, missing friends, family walks, favourite video games, pets, footy teams, jokes and riddles, the best school subjects and how good it is to catch up with one another. The Gathering allows for students to connect with peers in an informal setting. The Online Book Community is about sharing a love and appreciation of books in a fun manner. It is not a formal literacy time, it is a chance for students to explore specific interests, choosing their own books and bring a much-needed sense of community and debate. Perfect for students who can’t meet up in person to discuss their latest read. The focus also reinforces that our library is a vital and relevant resource for students even in these times. Books have included The 13th Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton and What Does It Mean To Be Kind? by Rana DiOrio. Students have the opportunity to reflect and discuss the book, have conversations and complete an activity. Students who attended the Online Book Community this week have loved the interaction with other students as well as some of their favourite reads. Both of these initiatives are optional and students may choose to opt in or opt out on any given week. Students have an opportunity to remain connected to our school community and engage in conversations outside of a typical class environment. They have the opportunity to play, learn, create, feel a sense of wellbeing and most importantly have some fun! I am grateful to Kimberlea Flynn who is the driving force behind these initiatives. Kimberlea brings energy and commitment to the student wellbeing in our school through these programs. All students will be given details on the timetable for future weeks and how to join these initiatives in class. I encourage you to remind your child of these times and support these exciting initiatives. Regards Brian Martin Principal 1

WELLBEING SchoolTV - SPECIAL REPORT: Riding the Corona Coaster Across Victoria, students and their families are experiencing challenging times with the state being in various stages of lockdown yet again. However, this second wave of the pandemic is now also beginning to impact other areas of Australia and New Zealand. Riding this corona coaster and navigating the ups and downs of the current reality is proving to be confronting for many people. The coronavirus has turned our lives upside down with our students returning to remote learning and parents continuing to juggle the home environment. The uncertainty of not knowing what will happen next may have an impact on many students and their families. There is a concern that mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and substance abuse, will increase, especially amongst young people. In the coming weeks, it will be vital for adult carers to reduce the stress levels at home and make life seem more manageable. As an adult carer, it will also be essential to look after your own wellbeing during this time. Ensure you make time to de-escalate your own nervous system and maintain your sleep routine, healthy eating habits, get some regular exercise and reach out virtually to friends and family. In this Special Report, families are encouraged to embrace the guidance offered to help minimise the impact of this corona coaster. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help. Students Keeping Social Many parents are asking us how to support their child in socialising with their friends at this time. While we are doing everything possible in class time as teachers and staff, students are likely still missing their friends. The following provides esafety advice from two different reputable sources about a range of social media and online gaming applications. You can use these sites to help you decide which tools might be best to enable your child see or talk to their friends. As always be mindful of placing your child and their device within sight or earshot to ensure their safety. Common Sense Media: Parent's Ultimate Guides The eSafety Commissioner: The eSafety Guide 5
SURVEY CLOSES 31 AUGUST Community Connection (CommConnect) Survey - 2 minutes of your time to help us to help you. From July 1, you will see more police out and about in the community as part of the CommConnect initiative across the Eastern Region of Victoria. CommConnect is a different approach to policing. Officers (usually at Sergeant level) will be assigned to engage with key stakeholders in specific sectors of the Police Service Area, more directly focusing resources to build stronger and more collaborative relationships. Allocating ownership to a specific supervisor to keep our communities safe will increase presence and visibility and allow police to respond to and focus on victims and people in need in a more agile way. As part of this process, local police are asking their communities what concerns they have regarding policing in their local suburbs and townships and ways in which police can better connect and support the community to address those concerns. Each survey relates to a Local Government area, so please feel free to respond to the survey relevant to your area. Please know your information is totally confidential and will not identify you. If you live in the Monash City Council area, please click on the below link and complete the short 2 minute survey. https://engage.vic.gov.au/victoria-police-community-connection-project/victoria-police-monash Please note that these surveys are not a way to report a specific crime. If you would like to report a non-urgent crime or event, please use the Police Assistance Line on 131 444, or Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000. If there is an emergency, please phone Victoria Police on 000. The program will run on Wednesdays 10.30am – 12.30pm. It will start on Wednesday 19 August and finish on Wednesday 16 September 2020. BUGK is a 5 week program for parents/carers of children aged 2-10. The program aims to build strong, positive and respectful relationship between parents/carers and their children.
