Careers Department Newsletter The Careers Team have continued to support students, with a focus on year 11 and 12 students this term. Face-to-face appointments have recommenced as well as employer engagement and further education information sessions. We work as a team and a whole school to implement the Gatsby Benchmarks. These are: 1. A stable careers programme 2. Learning from career and labour market information 3. Addressing the needs of each pupil 4. Linking curriculum learning to careers 5. Encounters with employers and employees 6. Experiences of workplaces 7. Encounters with further and higher education 8. Gatsby Benchmark 1 – A stable careers programme The Careers team have continued to utilise google classroom to ensure that the careers programme remains fully implemented along with The Careers Team Website which holds resources and careers information for students, teachers and parents. Engineering is a growing sector with a high demand for skilled workers. While Covid has impacted this growth there is now signs of an increase in demand. Gatsby Benchmark 3 - Addressing the need of each pupil The National Apprenticeship Show Central Virtual Fair was held on 10th November, highlighting Apprenticeship opportunities and offering information from Central England and the Midland's top employers and training providers. The show included workshops from ASK Apprenticeships, GCHQ/MI5/MI6, Experian, Virgin Media, PwC and The Royal Air Force We also welcomed Grant Thornton and Mercedes Benz to the school to talk to our Yr12 and Yr13 students about opportunities within their companies including their Degree Level Apprenticeship Schemes. Health and Social Care students went on a trip to HealthTec Thames Valley which is a unique health simulation centre based in the Aylesbury Campus of the Buckinghamshire College Group and is a Partnership with NHS Health Education England. They provide young people and adults with a practical insight into the 350+ careers available within the NHS and the Health & Social care sector, and an opportunity to experience working in Healthcare scenarios alongside healthcare professionals. The students experienced immersive learning following patient pathways and increase skill levels in basic first aid including resuscitation, AED and unconscious casualty. Yr12 students have received a number of UCAS support sessions run by Mrs Moulds. If you are considering University below are some links to some excellent resources to help you explore your options. Information and opportunities are shared via this platform on a regular basis from September we will be promoting a “Career of the week” to increase students’ knowledge on the variety of job roles available.
Every student at Ousedale has a Unifrog account and access to the platform. Please use your student email to log in, if you have forgotten your password please use the forgotten password link. Any issues please email careers@ousedale.org.uk for support. Students can access Unifrog via the link https://www.unifrog.org/ Unifrog is a one-stop-shop where students can explore their interests, then find and successfully apply for their next step after school. Students can log in and access information on careers, apprenticeships and university courses and compare them in the same place. This is a fantastic resource. Information is up to date, including the latest employment/destination data. Students can create a CV, write competency statements in support of apprenticeship and job applications. Parents- an introduction to Unifrog Benchmark 4 Linking Curriculum learning to Careers Yr10 welcomed BP to the school to hear about opportunities and learn more about the company. This also included launching the Engineer of the Year Competition. Yr11 and yr13 design students attended the MK Innovates STEM Festival which showcases the science, technology, engineering & mathematics excellence in our city. If you are unsure of your Career pathway do not worry, sometimes when we explore our favourite subjects this can highlight possible career sectors to explore further. Why not make a list of careers that interest you and book an appointment to see us to help you explore your possible next steps by emailing careers@ousedale.org.uk Benchmark 5 – Encounters with Employers and Employees Network Rail were welcomed to the school to run STEM workshops with some of our students which included presentations, practical activities and interaction with professional from the industry. Yr12 and Yr13 took part in a virtual Employability Skills workshop with InvestIN. Ousedale School has partnered with InvestIN which offers programmes to students and immersive experiences of their dream career, giving them the confidence to choose the right career and maximise their potential. Benchmark 6 Experience of the workplace Yr10 Engineering and Design students attended Niftylift Headquarters for a ‘Women in Engineering’ event this term to encourage young females to work and study in engineering roles. Speakers for schools and SpringPod continue to offer virtual work experience placements, please explore the sites below to find out more about upcoming opportunities. Virtual work experience booklet Benchmark 7 Encounters with Further and Higher Education We welcomed Milton Keynes, Northampton, Moulton and Bedford Colleges to our campuses for Yr11 students to hear about the course and facilities they offer. We also hosted a series of virtual evening events aimed at parents and students interested in finding out more about local collages. For more information about local college, sixth forms and university open days, please use our padlet which can be accessed via the Careers Website - https://padlet.com/melaniegibbard1/mrql8ef5xd2hiw52 The Careers Team hosted a series of virtual college transitions talks for our Yr11 students moving onto college in September with Bedford, Moulton, Northampton and Milton Keynes College. The sessions allowed students to hear from staff and pupils at college, discuss their first day and activities they will be involved with, results day, extracurricular activities and vital information such as bursary and bus pass information. The Careers Team have created a new interactive display in the Sixth Form Centre showing a wide selection of universities by location and distance from Ousedale School with QR codes which the student are able to use to view the Universities website and explore courses they are interested in further. What advice would you I have always wanted to pursue a career in the finance sector. They helped me develop as a person and helped during application and interview processes. Have you faced any barriers that have meant you have had to change your career aspiration and how have you overcome these? The process of applying for apprenticeships was a tough one in which a lot of work had to be done in order to be successful. There was an added challenge in doing this during a time by which working had gone remote, and therefore my application was also virtual. This meant additional research and preparation had to be done to ensure I was fully prepared for each stage of the application. If students are looking to apply for apprenticeships my one piece of advice would be to ensure they have thorough knowledge of the company they are applying for and examples where you have portrayed their values/culture in real life. In ten years’ time where do you see yourself? In ten years’ time I still see myself working in the finance industry. I aspire to be in a senior managerial position.
