CULTURAL EVENTS JANUARY - JUNE 2019 Science meets Art : How to shape the future of Humanity / The Third Paradise Date: 21 & 22 January 2019 Venue: Nanyang Technological University (NTU), School of Art, Design and Media Under the patronage of the Embassy of Italy in Singapore, the art installation "The Third Paradise - Il Terzo Paradiso" by Michelangelo Pistoletto has been unveiled on the sloping grass roof of the School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), on 21st January 2019. In concjuntion with the inauguration, NTU also hosted a panel dialogue on 22nd January, where Pistoletto and Prof. Ben Feringa, 2016 Nobel Laureate for Chemistry discussed the meeting of science and art, and how it will help shape the future of humanity. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Emerita Helga Nowotny, former President of the European Research Council. Film screening of "La vita è bella" (Life is Beautiful) by Roberto Benigni Date: 27 January & 9 February 2019 Venue: cinema "The Projector" On the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2019, the Embassy of Italy and the Embassy of Israel co-presented the screening of the film "La vita è bella" (Life is Beautiful) by Roberto Benigni at the cinema The Projector (https://theprojector.sg).
Concert "Music in Times of Tragedy" Date: 28 January 2019 Venue: Esplanade Recital Studio On the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2019, the Embassy of Italy and the Embassy of Israel co-presented the concert "Music in Times of Tragedy", led by Isreali composer and pianist Amrit Weiner. The concert was dedicated to the music that was written and performed during the Holocaust. The live music, performed by Maestro Weiner together with a quartet composed of Singaporean musicians, was interwoven with the personal stories and the struggles of the musicians, some of them Italians, all perished during the Holocaust. Screening of the documentery "Superdesign", by Francesca Molteni Date: 5 March 2019 Venue: National Design Centre On the occasion of the Italian Design Day and Singapore Design Week, the documentary "Superdesign" by Francesca Molteni has been screened at the Singapore National Design Centre. SuperDesign - Italian Radical Design 1965 - 1975 (produced in 2017) is about nineteen professionals of the Italian Radical Movement. Through their words and their stories, the film recalls the history and the heritage of the movement. "From City to Object: Utopian Vision and Radical attitude in design. The Italian Version" - Talk by Franco Raggi Date: 12 March 2019 Venue: National Design Centre Franco Raggi, architect, designer and critic who belongs to the original nucleus of the Italian radical architecture movement, delivered a Talk dedicated to the evolution of the Italian design from 1920s with a focus on the innovations introduced by the radical movement (between 1960s and 1970s) and the Movement's legacy in contemporary times. The Talk was a part of the Singapore Design Week programme and the celbrations of the Italian Design Day.
"Wearable Chairs" Performance Date: 12 March 2019 Venue: National Design Centre Franco Raggi's Talk has been accompanied by Gianni Pettena's radical design performance "Wearable Chairs". The original performance, carrid out at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1971, has been restaged and performed by "Lasalle College of the Arts" dance students and alumni with choreographic direction by Susan Sentler, using the original Pettena's wearable chairs. On 12 March it has been perfomed for the audience at the National Design Centre and days before, while students were walking around the streets, it has been recorded. The event was also a part of the Singapore Design Week programme and the celbrations of the Italian Design Day. " Art Meets Physics" Date: 15 April 2019 Venue: Nanyang Technological University (NTU), School of Art, Design and Media On the occasion of the "Italian Research Day" and 500th anniversary of Leonardo Da Vinci's death, the Embassy of Italy in collaboration with LIBER, has organized the event entitled "Art Meets Physics. A tribute to Leonardo Da Vinci" at the School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) of Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Speakers: Dr Vania Virgili (Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics, Italy - INFN) and Dr Agnieszka Banas (Singapore Synchrotron Light Source); Moderator: Prof. Tim White (School of Materials Science and Engineering, NTU). A new portable technology "MACHINA" (Movable Accelerator for Cultural Heritage In-situ Non-destructive Analysis) has also been introduced. "Reflections on Design Sustainability" - Talk by Roberto Palomba Date: 13 May 2019 Venue: Lasalle College of the Arts Roberto Paloma, one of the most prolific architect-designers, creative soul of Poltrona Frau, during his twelve-day Asia Tour, has delivered a Talk "Reflections on Design Sustainability" organized by the Embassy of Italy at "Lasalle College of the Arts". He shared his view on heritage, sustainability and handing over the world to the digital-native generation.
"Notti Magiche" (Magical Nights) by Paolo Virzì at the "EU Film Festival 2019" Date: 19 May 2019 Venue: National Gallery Singapore, The Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorim The latest film "Notti Magiche" (Magical Nights) by Paolo Virzì, humorous and daring tribute to the golden years of Italian cinema, was the closing film at the 29th edition of the EU Film Festival organized and coordinated by the EU Delegation in Singapore. The screening has been presented by the Embassy of Italy. Italian Film Festival 2019 - Fare Cinema Date: 22 May - 7 June 2019 Venue: cinemas The Projector & Golden Village Plaza A selection of eleven contemporary films: From 23 to 25 May, at The Projector - "Dogman" by Matteo Garrone, "Il capitale umano" (Human Capital) by P.Virzì, "La storia di B. La scomparsa di mia madre" (The Disappearnace of My Mother) by Beniamino Barrese and "La ragazza nella nebbia" (The Girl in the Fog) by Donato Carrisi From 26 May to 7 June, at Golden Village Plaza - "Fortunata" by Sergio Castellitto, "Benedetta follia" (Blessed Madness) by Carlo Verdone, "Il primo re" (The First King) by Matteo Rovere, "Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot" (They Call Me Jeeg) by Gabriele Mainetti, "Come un gatto in tangenziale" (Like a Cat on a Highway) by Riccardo Milani, "Smetto quando voglio" (I Can Quit Whenevr I Want) by Sydney Sibilia and "La terra dell'abbastanza" (Boys Cry) by Fabio & Damiano D'Innocenzo. Casting Director Francesco Vedovati, was in attendance at the Opening of the Festival on 22 May at the National Museum of Singapore, as well as at the screening of the film "Dogman" on 23 May at The Projector. Vedovati was casting director of the films "Dogman", "Fortunata" and "They Call Me Jeeg" in the programme of the Festival.
"How the Casting Process Works in Movies and TV Series" Lecture by Francesco Vedovati Date: 24 May 2019 Venue: Ngee Ann Polytechnic, School of Film & Media Studies On the occasion of the Italian Film Festival 2019 and the initiative "Fare Cinema" (Making Cinema), promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foregin Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), Francesco Vedovati, Casting Director, held a lecture for the students of Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Film & Media Studies, film makers and general public, on what it is the casting and how it works. EU @ Schools Date: 23 May 2019 Venue: Tampines Meridian Junior College As a part of the project EU@Schools organized by the EU Delegation in Singapore to Singapore with objective to bring the EU closer to young people and to raise curiosity about the EU as well as the righ and diverse history and cultures of Europe, the Embassy of Italy hold a Talk at Tampines Meridian Junior College. "Disturbing Narratives" - Contermporary art exhibition Date: 26 June 2019 - 8 February 2020 Venue: The Parkview Museum Singapore The exhibition features works by more than thirty artist from Europe, Asia, Africa and America who are working with completely different visual languages and media. Among them, four Italian artists (Guglielmo Castelli, Andrea Fogli, Daniele Galliano and Paolo Grassino) whose artworks were created in situ, were in attendance at the Opening ceremony on 26 June. The exhibition is curated by Loran Hegyi, the museum's art director.
