Cyber Chip Requirement • Grades 1‐3 https://www.scouting.org/training/youth‐protection/cyber‐chip/grades‐1‐3/ 1. Read, commit to, and sign the Level I Internet Safety Pledge. (BSA Cyber Chip blue card – can be ordered at https://www.scoutshop.org/) 2. Watch the video “Bad Netiquette Stinks.” (NetSmartz.org) 3. Watch the Router’s Birthday Surprise Interactive Adventure. (NetSmartz.org) 4. Show and tell your family, den leader, den, or pack what you have learned. Note: All Cyber Chips will expire annually. Each Scout will need to go to Netsmartz and complete 2 new resources to recommit to net safety and netiquette. Then, with the unit leader, the Scout can add the new date to the Cyber Chip card or certificate. • Grades 4‐5 https://www.scouting.org/training/youth‐protection/cyber‐chip/grades‐4‐5/ 1. As an individual or with your den, use the Teachable Recipes to demonstrate Internet safety rules to your den leader, den, or pack. 4. Discuss with your unit leader the acceptable standards and practices for using allowed electronic devices, such as phones and games, at your meetings and other Scouting events. Note: All Cyber Chips will expire annually. Each Scout will need to go to Netsmartz and complete 2 new resources to recommit to net safety and netiquette. Then, with the unit leader, the Scout can add the new date to the Cyber Chip card or certificate.
September Pack Activity • Lion • Learn how to do jumping jacks, crab walk, balance a small bag of chips on your head as you walk, walk backwards, hop on one foot • Prepare a nutritious snack and take it on an exploration of Jack Williams park (2041 Neptune Road, Livermore) – Scout hint: if you go after dinner (early evening) you’ll see more bunnies!! • Locate the ‘secret’ trail that goes along the homes (opposite from the playground side of the park). You are in nature and in the home of wild animals, be sure to respect their home by walking carefully and leaving what you find. • Locate the bench and dedication plaque on the rock. Locate the tennis courts. • At the tennis court demonstrate these 3 exercises– jumping jacks, hop on one foot & the other foot, run fast • Do not forget the importance of rest when you exercise • Tiger • Prepare a small pack for your hike and show how you got it ready • Visit Sycamore Grove and go for a hike. While on your hike find/identify: • 2 sights/sounds of “nature” • 3 kinds of animals or signs that animals have been on the trail • 2 different trees and 2 different types of plants that grown in your area • Wolf • Using a local map identify what and where the compass rose is on the map. Locate where you live on the map and locate Sycamore Grove Park. Use a compass to identify which direction is north. Show how you determine which way is south, east and west. As you prepare for your hike and make a list of possible weather changes that could happen during your outing, discuss how you will prepare for each one. Based on what you now know about the weather, dress appropriately for your hike. Go on your hike, follow the Winery Loop trail and locate the old Olivina Winery with your compass. • While out identify/find: • 6 different types of birds/other animals/insects you see or explain evidence of their presence. Tell how you identified them. • 2 interesting things that you’ve never seen before and discuss • Bear • Visit Sycamore Grove (Wetmore Entrance). Prepare a small pack, include a nutritious snack, a magnifying glass and binoculars. At the park visit the native garden area. Read the plaques and discuss what you have learned about plants and animals that are native to California. Can you think of at least one animal that has become extinct in the last 100 years and one animal that is currently endangered? What do you think caused their declines? • Continue visiting Sycamore Grove and go on a 1 mile hike. Identify 6 signs that mammals, birds, insects, reptiles or plants are living in the park.
September Pack Activity • Webelos I and II • Prepare to go on a 3 mile rock hunt at Sunol Wilderness Regional Preserve • Visit https://www.ebparks.org/parks/sunol/ to plan your hike, including a nutritious snack! • Make a mineral test kit (refer to Handbook pg. 313) and take it on your hike • Webelos I • Review Handbook photos of poisonous plants, dangerous animals and insects you might encounter on your hike (refer to pg. 91) • Assemble a first‐aid kit • All Webelos I/II ‐ Extras to bring include: Cub Scout Handbook and a magnifying glass • Recite the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace Principles from memory (we sent cards home that you can use to prepare). Talk about how you can demonstrate these on your hike. • Lead the hike and be ready to tell your hiking partners what ‘geology’ is and why it is an important part of your world. • During your hike look for different kinds of rocks or minerals and use your Handbook to properly identify them. • Use your magnifying glass to take a closer look at these rocks and test them with your mineral test kit; record your results in your Handbook. • When you return home look at a map of California and identify some geological features. Identify geological building materials in your home and some of the geological materials used around Livermore.
