INTERIOR DESIGN Startup Checklist COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides students the opportunity to develop skills in applying the elements and principles of design and architecture to interior design. This course also provides a background for a variety of careers in interior design. Students will also learn to create client profiles through the use of colour, fabrics and textures, various design principles and elements; materials, furnishings, accessories, and equipment; colour theory and finishes; Instructions include the history of interior design, furniture styles, design theory, and project presentations and several other areas. Mini projects are integrated throughout the course to provide applications as the students’ study: architecture, furniture styles, surface treatments and backgrounds, design and function of space and lighting. 1. Introduction to Interior Design: Various fields and careers, Differentiate between Decor and Design Discuss the course requirements, expectations of the instructor and students, projects and career opportunities. Interior Design Careers: Interior Designer/Entrepreneur, Lighting Designer, Kitchen and Bath Designer, Staging Designer, colour consultant, professional organizer, interior architecture, interior decorator/stylist, furniture designer, etc. Identify the difference between Interior Design and Interior Decoration/styling. INTERIOR DESIGN Create a business plan: Work Environment for Interior Designers 2. Design Theory/ Fundamentals of Interior Design: elements and principles of design Discuss the principles of design and demonstrate the use of elements of design. Fundamentals of Basic Design Introduction to the Principles and Elements of Interior Design Rhythm, Balane and Harmony Focal Point, positive and negative space, symmetry and asymmetry. Practice Test: Students will discuss and demonstrate their understanding of these elements and principles of design by trying out the various principles. 3. Color, Textures, Patterns, Fabrics Students will be introduced to basic basic aspects of colour, fabrics, various textures and patterns for different surfaces which will allow them have the foundation for more advanced concepts like colour schemes and also Understand better, the principles and elements of art and design. These would be through practical and interactive classroom activities and assignments. Identify the terms associated with the colour wheel, colour psychology and the major colour schemes. Identify and explain the use of colour or hue. Identify a colour wheel and how to mix colours from the wheel, Understand primary colours, secondary colours and tertiary colors. Identify and explain the use of warm and cool colors on the color wheel, color principles. INTERIOR DESIGN Create a business plan: Design and develop possible solutions (appropriate material and texture selection, style and colour selection) Texture selection: appearance and tactile quality (touch or hand-the feel), performance, or functional properties, that affect wear-life and durability, safety factors, installation and maintenance, cost, client budget, etc. Colour Selection Factors: amount of Light, Client preference, Space, Trends & Style, Location in the World/Cultural associations The types of textures, patterns Activity 1: Create a colour scheme for an executive office and explain the impact and influence of the colours you have selected. Activity 2: Imagine that you are working for a client who tells you that they love the look and feel of silk and want to incorporate it into their sitting room décor. The client has two young children living at home. How would you integrate silk into this space? 4. Furnishing, Accessories, Introduction to various interior design styles, styling/decorating. Students will distinguish features of selected furniture and interior design styles and characteristics of each, accessories. Lighting Considering various sources of light within a space The three main types of lighting used in residential and commercial spaces Working with natural and artificial light Choosing appropriate light fixtures, including bulbs How to achieve a variety of special lighting effects Activity/assignment: Imagine that a client has asked you to redesign their dining room. The client and their family eat most of their meals in the kitchen, but they entertain guests a couple of times a month. The room is large and faces to the south. The client would like you to create a clean, minimal interior that is still inviting. What bulbs and fixtures would you recommend? Where would you place them and why? 7.
