It’s time to plan for your Freshman Year This Power Point was created for current __8th__Grade Students moving to _9th__grade next year. Purpose: • The purpose of this presentation is to familiarize students and parents with the registration process and assist with course selection. Goal: • The goal at the end of the presentation is to select your __9th__grade courses and to list course selections in the google form provided at the end of this presentation Note: If you do not fill out the Google form used for course selection, your counselor will choose classes for you ***Please look for the DM Wolf symbol for Regular/Honors related information Look for the IB MYP symbol for IB MYP related information

ENGLISH All __9th_ grade students take English. Here are a few things to consider when selecting your English Class: • What is your current grade in English? • If you are currently making an A or B in your current English class, would you like to challenge yourself with Honors English next year? • What placement does your teacher recommend? • Honors classes are taught at a faster pace and require more in-depth work.

SCIENCE Science Class Options: • Earth & Space Science • Physics First • Physics First Honors –pre-requisite-completion of Algebra I preferably with A or B • Biology • Honors Biology Recommended College Path 3 years of lab-based Science Preferably Biology, Chemistry and Physics
SOCIAL STUDIES SUSD requires three (3) credits in Social Studies, consisting of all of the following: • Two (2) semesters of World History/World Geography(Recommended 10 grade) th *Advanced Placement (Click here for more AP information) Year long commitment Test in Spring – fee associated with testing (optional) Test score determines college credit/acceptance dependent on program Weighted on 5.0 scale • Two (2) semesters of American and Arizona History ( Recommended 11 grade) th • One (1) semester of American and Arizona Government (Recommended 12 th grade) • One (1) semester of Economics/Free Enterprise (Recommended 12 grade) th *Only IB MYP Freshman are recommended to take Social Studies Freshman Year
DESERT MOUNTAIN DIPLOMA SEALS Fine Arts Proficiency Seal Seal of Biliteracy ▪ The Fine Arts Seal is awarded to ▪ The Arizona Seal of Biliteracy Program graduating high school students who complete an Arizona Fine Arts Pathway recognizes high school students who and engage in additional fine arts or achieve proficiency in English plus at career and technical education courses; least one additional language. The fine arts-related extracurricular activities and community service, and seal is placed on the student’s diploma the presentation of a Fine Arts Capstone and noted on the transcript Project. ▪ You will need four (4) years of Fine Arts ▪ Seal of Biliteracy Link Classes. ▪ Fine Arts Proficiency Seal Link
WORLD LANGUAGE • You must have completed both semesters of a Language before moving on to the next level (preferably with C or higher) • Arizona Universities require 2 years of the same language • Competitive Colleges and Universities prefer 3 or more years of the same world language ● IB MYP requires either Spanish, French or Mandarin
FINE ARTS • One Fine Arts/CTE credit is required for graduation -Arizona universities will accept a CTE class in lieu of a fine arts credit -Out of state universities require fine arts credit, not a CTE • Fine Arts Classes follow a progression and should be taken sequentially • Studio Art I is a prerequisite for all Art Classes • Band Auxiliary, Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble are ZERO hour classes (an additional morning class )
PHYSICAL EDUCATION Please note, before taking a PE elective in the future, you must have completed and passed both semesters of Introductory to Physical Education.
CTE To prepare today’s students for the new global economy, SUSD- CTE courses provide students with opportunities to engage in learning activities that teach academic and 21st Century Skills standards taught through relevant project-based learning tasks using current industry standard technology. Completion of certain CTE courses lead to industry- recognized certification. For detailed information regarding CTE certifications and course descriptions visit the High School Planning Guide. Ex. Sports Medicine: CPR and First Aid Certification Note: AZ Universities will accept CTE credit in lieu of Fine Art Credit
INTER- DEPARTMENTAL • Student Government requires an application • Robotics is an 8th-hour class (additional course after school) • Yearbook is a sequential class
IMPORTANT NOTES ▪ If you do not complete the google form linked on the final page your counselors will select courses for you!!!!!!! ▪ There will be NO COURSE CHANGES at the start of the school year except for classes completed in summer school. ▪ Please keep in mind that all courses must be passed in order to earn credit. ▪ By registering for Honors courses you agree to abide by the Honors Contract ▪ No courses will be switched to eL classes because you do not like your teacher or schedule. ▪ Non-SUSD courses must be approved by your counselor. NO COURSE CHANGES AFTER MARCH 31,2021
