COVID-19 PROCEDURES ABBREVIATED For a complete procedure breakdown see “What actions are FOCP staff, volunteers and attendees taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19?” in the FAQ sheet. MASKS: For the safety of all those attending Climb 2 Feed Kids, we require everyone who participates wear masks. CROWDS: We have adapted our event to limit the number of people in our space at any given time. For teams competing in our pack-off, there will be no more than 10 people competing at a given time. Delivery dash teams will utilize our contactless delivery method to drop off food directly to our families. TOUCH POINTS: We have reduced touch points by requiring pre-event packet pickup for apparel and funds. Our warehouse will be sanitized following each pack-off to eliminate potentially harmful germs and contact. SOCIAL DISTANCE: We developed measures to ensure social distancing by requiring pre-event packet pickup to reduce lines, limiting the number of people in our warehouse at any given time and introducing a contactless way of participating. SAFETY: We will have volunteers dedicated to maintaining the health and safety of event participants on the day of. We ask that all attendees listen to instructions from staff and volunteers to maintain the health and safety of all who attend Climb 2 Feed Kids. LIMITING SPECTATORS: To maintain social distance inside our warehouse, we are not allowing teams to invite spectators to our pack- offs. Additionally, teams may elect to bring friends or family with for our delivery dash but should recognize that they will need space in their vehicle for roughly 12-14 boxes of food. EMERGENCY CARE: If someone becomes sick at the event, we will separate them from others as soon as possible until they can go home. CONTACTING: We will collect contact information for all volunteers, participants and staff at the event and will notify them in the event of a confirmed case.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How has the event changed? Rather than be indoors at Bresnan Arena or outdoors at Mount Kato, we have moved Climb 2 Feed Kids to BackPack Central where teams can make an immediate impact on the lives of enrolled youth. Instead of climbing 768 stairs, or tubing down the hill, participants can take part in 1 of 3 ways: through our pack-off, delivery dash or Team Clementine options. The first option involves participating in a pack-off at our BackPack Central warehouse. Teams will be split in half and 5 members at a time will compete to see who can pack a predetermined number of boxes the fastest, with the fastest time winning! Time will be added for each additional box remaining past 30 minutes (if a team does not complete the challenge in 30) and for a lack of quality control. Once both halves of a team have completed the challenge, the times will be added up for their final grand total. The second option is our delivery dash. As a noncompetitive counterpart to our pack-off, the delivery dash invites participants to help get food out in the community. Participants will sign up for time slots to deliver food during our set delivery days. On their delivery day, they will arrive at BackPack Central, have their cars loaded by our volunteers and take that food directly to the houses of area students! Our third option, Team Clementine, is for those who want to support our mission, but who may feel uncomfortable with any gathering, socially distant or not. Whether as an individual or as a team, members of Team Clementine will raise $100 per person to receive their exclusive Climb gear, and those who raise $200 a person or more will receive our Above and Beyond Carhartt hat. Why did the event change? The increased need for our programs coupled with event restrictions caused us to take pause and reevaluate how we could best welcome people to celebrate and fundraise with us. We’ve altered the event (for the 3rd and final time!), keeping its core spirit, to ensure that no matter which way we participate, we participate safely. Our 3 participation options are central to our mission, involving each and every participant in our process in a safe and exciting way!
Will I still be able to climb? For sure! Even though this year is a little wonky, we are inviting anyone and everyone to participate. We just ask that all those who attend Climb to Feed Kids listen to our staff and volunteers and abide by our safety rules and regulations. With our 3 alternative options to Climb, you are more than welcome to whichever challenge best fits your comfort level! How will the process work? There will be a different process depending on which challenge your team takes for Climb. For all teams, Team Captains will receive an email after registration inviting them to pick one of our 3 options. There are limited spots, and spots will be filled on a first come first served basis. If your team signs up for our Pack-Off: • Your team will be competing in our pack off. To maintain social distance, we will start by splitting your team into two groups of 5. These two groups will receive packing instructions from our wonderful Programming team. One group of 5 will compete at a time for a grand total of 1 hour on site for the team. • The goal is simple, pack your boxes as quickly as possible while maintaining high quality. Each group of 5 will be given a predetermined number of boxes to pack and 30 minutes in which to do it. The clock stops once the last box hits the pallet. If a team does not complete the challenge in 30 minutes, a time penalty will be added for each box remaining. • Additional time penalties will be given for quality control blunders such as dropped or mishandled food. Additional time penalties will be added by our superstar referee, whose word is final. Once both groups of your team compete, your times will be added for your grand total! If your team signs up for our Delivery Dash: • Your team will either be doing deliveries February 11th or March 11th. On the day you are signed up, please follow the a-frame BackPack Food Program signs to the back door of our warehouse. When you arrive, please back up to the overhead load door where FOCP staff will provide you with instructions, route maps and food packs. • Volunteers for home deliveries must wear a mask, have a form of navigation available when driving (GPS or maps), a phone charger and be available for a minimum of one hour. Please bring your own sanitizer to use before handling food packages and wipes for sanitizing steering wheels as needed. • Dunkin’ will have a drive-thru coffee/hot cocoa/donuts tent in our parking lot to fuel you up for your delivery dash. • This is a non-competitive option. You will not be timed, so we don’t want to see any racing or drifting through the streets of Mankato.
If you sign up for Team Clementine: • You’ve joined an exciting community of caring community members! You don’t need a Team of 10 for this option, anyone can join Team Clementine whether they are flying solo or with their team! After you register, you will be sent a link to our Team Clementine Fundraising page. At the bottom of the page, please select “I want to fundraise for this.” This will create your unique fundraising page that you can ask people to donate to. • You can pick up your climb apparel and turn in your funds on our pre-event packet pickup dates hosted at BackPack Central (2120 Howard Dr. W, Suite F in North Mankato): o Wednesday, January 27 from 11:00am – 5:00pm, o Thursday, January 28 from 11:00am – 5:00pm, and o Friday, January 29 from 11:00am – 6:00pm. • Those who raise $200 or more per person will also receive our Above and Beyond apparel (which may or may not be a sweet branded Carhartt hat). If I don’t have 10 people, how does that work? You must have a minimum of 5 on each team and a max of 10. If you are choosing our Team Clementine option, you can join as an individual or as part of a team. Do I have to wear a mask? We are requiring all staff, volunteers and attendees of the event wear masks to be as safe as possible. Is there going to be a place for my team to hang out? With the modified options this year, teams will be actively engaged in the event for the entirety of their time on site. During the pack-off, while the first group of 5 is competing, the second group of 5 should wait outside our warehouse until their pack session starts. How difficult are the options? While our traditional climb is highly physically exerting, this year’s event is all about strategy and timing. Teams will have to flex their brains to figure out the quickest way to pack high quality boxes. The deliveries have been streamlined and all questions will be answered by our superstar volunteers.
What if there’s extreme weather? This year’s Climb directly supports our programs both monetarily as well as service-wise. The events our participants are competing in will ensure that enrolled students will receive food for February and March. Knowing that, we will encourage everyone to pull up their Minnesotan boot straps to meet the need. However, if we have a record-breaking blizzard, we may postpone deliveries, and if we do so, that announcement will be made publicly. What if my apparel does not fit? There will be a limited number of alternative sizes available on a first-come, first-served basis. Can I bring my kids? Deliveries can be a family affair, and we’ve seen many young faces excited to help deliver food! As long as you have room for 12-14 boxes in your car, you are more than welcome to bring your kids along. However, to maintain social distance in our warehouse, for those teams competing in the pack-off, we ask that no spectators or non-team members come along. Will I still be able to invite spectators to watch me climb? To maintain distance in our warehouse, we are not allowing spectators to watch the pack off for those participating in that option. Will there be refreshments? Yes! Just like every year, we will have water available courtesy of Culligan. Dunkin’ will be providing hot cocoa, coffee and donuts in a drive-thru option for our delivery dash. Will there still be merch? Of course! Each participant will receive an item of limited-edition Climb swag, and those who go above and beyond (aka donate $2,000 or more as a team), will receive additional merch. Where do I park? If participating in the pack off, teams can park on the front side of the BackPack Warehouse building (2120 Howard Dr. W, Suite F North Mankato, MN 56003). If participating in our delivery dash, we ask you follow the a-frame signs to the back side of the building so we can load your vehicle with food
boxes. You will not need to exit your car for the delivery dash, instead back up to our overhead doors and our volunteers will guide you from there! What time do I need to be there? Each team will sign up for a specific time, no matter which option they are choosing. For pack-offs, teams should arrive at least 5 minutes ahead of their scheduled pack so they can receive proper instructions. For deliveries, arrive at the scheduled time. How long is the event? Both pack-off and delivery dash participants can expect the event to take roughly 1 hour. What actions are FOCP staff, volunteers and attendees taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19? In consideration of MN state and CDC guidelines, we have put several preventative measures in place to ensure safety and health at Climb 2 Feed Kids. All these measures are for participant safety and those attending the event are required to adhere to these guidelines as well as any instructions our staff or volunteers provide on the day of. Teams participating in the pack-off will be competing in groups of 5 to ensure they can always maintain 6 feet of distance. We will have hand sanitizer and gloves available for any who may wish to use it and will be requiring all those at the event wear masks. Our delivery dash participants will be using the contactless delivery method we have been utilizing for the entirety of the 2020-2021 school year. As recommended by the CDC, we are requiring that any volunteers or participants who are sick or have had potential exposure to someone with COVID-19 within two weeks of the event, do not attend Climb 2 Feed Kids. If someone becomes sick at the event, we will separate them from others as soon as possible until they can go home. If needed, we will contact emergency services. We will have contact information for all volunteers, participants and staff at the event and will contact them in the event of a confirmed case. We will have volunteers designated to ensure that our surfaces are sanitized and that safety measures are being accounted for. We ask that all those
attending the events listen to our volunteers and abide by their instructions so we can be as safe as possible. How many participants will be involved? The numbers will fluctuate on delivery days, but everyone will be in their vehicles for this option. For our pack-offs, we will only have one team on site at a time to keep our numbers low. Can I participate in more than one way? With limited space in our two on-site options, we are having teams choose just one of our 3 options to compete. If I join Team Clementine, am I required to raise $100? Members of Team Clementine must raise $100 per person to receive their climber apparel. If you are interested in simply supporting the event, we invite you to donate to any of our climb team pages or to the Team Clementine page found on our website. Is there a limit on participants for each option? We will have 12 team slots available for our pack off, 24 for our delivery dash and unlimited availability for Team Clementine.
