Trying to examine the events in my life is difficult. In my case there are several things that come to mind, all of which are centered on a relationship with Jesus Christ and His church. Church activities were always a major part of my life. There was never a question about whether we were going to church on Sunday morning, Sun- day evening, and Wednesday evening. My parents served as won- derful role models. In addition, there were two other important role models in my life, my brothers, Sam and Ted. They were 18 and 15 when I was born. Even though there was considerable age differ- ence between us, our parents did a wonderful job of keeping us close as a family. Jesus came into my heart at the age of 9 years old. Most of my young life was spent in Harrison, Arkansas where I learned to play the piano which prepared me to be able to serve the Lord by going to some of the smaller churches in the association to help with their music on Sundays. As an adult, I have been through some valleys and on the mountaintops but through it all the Lord was there with me no matter what was going on in my life. My faith in the Lord has never wavered. My life has been blessed with a daughter, D.D., who lives in Texas and is a Board Certified Behavioral Analyst at an autism clinic. I moved to Springfield 23 years ago and returned to school to finish my college degree. While continuing my education in Computer Informa- tion Systems, I worked part time in the mailroom at CoxHealth. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, my new career started in the Information Technology department at CoxHealth. 3
Historical Committee In the mid 1950s, several of the Protes- tant churches in Springfield worked together to have a combined service on Sunday evenings in the summertime. At one time they gathered on the plaza in front of Carrington Hall on the campus across the street. Part of the years they met at the Living Memorial near the Nature Center. They took turns provid- ing the speaker and the choir or special music for the services. It was outdoors and in the summer time and it often was warm. They provided paper fans for one’s comfort. We came into possession of a bunch of these fans a few years ago. Because of the urgent needs of many families due to the pandemic, University Hope is using funds available to assist with rent and utilities. We have paid a month’s rent for a single mother who was about to be evicted. Two other young families were helped with rent to prevent eviction. We helped a young family whose utilities had been cut off pay their back bills and get their power Dear Church Family, restored. They were referred to us by Crosslines who could help them with Missing you and hoping food. But they needed cash immediately to rent a home and get utilities turned we can all be together on. They are hoping to get this done before Christmas with help from University again soon. Hope. We are working with another woman who escaped from an abusive relationship in another state. Due to COVID and the need to relocate, she lost her employment. Since coming to Springfield she has secured a good job, but needs help to pay a deposit and first month’s rent for an apartment. We already were able to help her with bus passes so that she could get to and from work. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT cont’d from page 2 was Professor of Christian Ministry at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. She also played an active role in helping establish and lead “Hope Builders” in Richmond, a program initiated by the WMU. Through this program, mentoring relationships were built with women who needed help finding their way. Bob and Marilyn happily retired back in Bob’s stomping grounds, Springfield, MO. Both were and continue to be excited to help minister at UHBC. Marilyn was familiar with American Baptist Churches through her ministry with the DCBC, and they both had numerous contacts with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Both feel blessed to be part of a community of believers who cherish faith in Christ and who value innovative ministry. As Marilyn looks back on her life, she is amazed at all the places it took her. Her stints as a Home Economist and Junior High Science Teacher opened many doors for ministry, eventually leading to full-time ministry. God truly works in mysterious ways, revealing just enough at a time to keep the adventure moving. Since Elementary School, her favorite Bible verse remains II Timothy 1:7: “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” My career continues with CoxHealth and Cerner Corporation as a Senior Business Intelligence Developer but now from home because of COVID. I became a member of UHBC 19 years ago and have had the privilege to serve on several of the committees and boards of the church. Currently, because of COVID, the online worship services and Bible studies have been a blessing. The future is exciting for our church because the Lord has great things planned for us. My prayers are with my UHBC family for safety and health through the trying times that we are living in today. 10
