& Messiah Messenger January & February 2018 Messiah Lutheran Church 901 North Sixth Street Harrisburg, PA 17102 Holger Roggelin, Pastor web- messiahhbg.org e-mail: pastor@ messiahhbg.org e-mail:cheryl@messiahhbg.org Phone: 717-233-6731 Pastor’s Message Welcome to the year 2018! One of my first tasks in the New Year, or even in the days between Christmas and the New Year, is to personalize my calendar. Though I like working with a computer, I am still using a paper appointment calendar. So I am writing in birthdays and other dates important to me, and I am sure many of you will do the same in your favorite calendar. They seem to be ubiquitous now, and come in all shapes and forms, from an app on your phone to the colorful wall calendar from some business showing pretty mountains in our kitchen. In a time when calendars were not yet so readily available, it was necessary to make known the date of Easter in advance, since many celebrations of the year depend on its date. That announcement used to be done on the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6. The number of Sundays that follow Epiphany, the date of Ash Wednesday, and the number of Sundays that follow Pentecost are all computed in relation to Easter. Although calendars now give the date of Easter and the other feasts for many years in advance, something like the Epiphany proclamation still has value. It is a reminder of the centrality of the resurrection of the Lord in the liturgical year and the importance of the great mysteries of faith which are celebrated each year. Here is the complete Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts for 2018 Know, dear brothers and sisters, that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God's mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior.
On the fourteenth day of February will fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the first day of April you will celebrate with joy Easter Day, the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the thirteenth day of May will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.] On the twentieth day of May, the feast of Pentecost. On the twenty-seventh day of May, the feast of the Holy Trinity On the second day of December, the First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. The overlay of different calendars, lunar- and solar-based, secular and sacred, sometimes leads to interesting “pairings”, like just recently when Advent IV fell on Christmas Eve morning. In 2018, Ash Wednesday will fall on Valentine’s Day, and Easter Sunday will be on April 1, April Fool’s Day (now there is a sermon right there…). We are also looking forward to the ordination of our Vicar Ron Costen during Synod Assembly on Friday, June 1, at Messiah College, and to his first Eucharist with us on Sunday, June 3. As we mark our calendars and look ahead into 2018, may this year be filled with many blessings for you and your loved ones. May the light of Christ that we celebrate during Epiphany be a beacon shining ahead and leading our steps, as Psalm 119: 105 says: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Make sure there is room in your calendar, both the physical one as well the one in your head and mind, for encounters with that word, be it on Sundays or otherwise (Btw: our Lenten course will start on February 21!) See you at Messiah Your Pastor Holger Roggelin ASH WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 14, 2018 “Ashes to Go” 8:00 to 9:00 AM & 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. on the Harrisburg Capitol Steps & East Rotunda. Pastors from the Harrisburg area will be taking part. Noon Worship: 12:00 Noon Service at Messiah will be in the Nave with the Imposition of Ashes. Evening Service: At 6:00 PM we will offer a simple Soup dinner; service will start at 7:00 PM. Messiah will be the host in 2018. Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion will follow. Choral music will be a combined effort of the choirs of St. Michaels Lutheran, Messiah Lutheran and Christ Lutheran Churches. All are welcome.
Vicars Corner: Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, My internship ends in just another three weeks, though I will remain here at Messiah and engage in preaching and other services to the congregation and others. One of the highlights of being here has been working with children and families moving toward baptism for children. Clearly as I talk with people about what brought them to Messiah the top two responses are that the congregation is so kind, friendly and receptive and the other is that the music is wonderful and uplifting. As you probably know, I have been approved for ordination which will occur at the Synodical Assembly in late May and early June. I will be ordained on Friday evening June 1 and Pr. Roggelin has invited me to conduct my first service of worship as an ordained pastor here at Messiah on June 3, 2018. This will allow everyone at Messiah to have a part in my ordination without having to drive to Messiah College in Grantville, where the Synod Assembly is held. Each of you have been supportive, straight forward and helpful as I have moved through the internship process and served as your vicar. I so appreciate that. My plans for my ministry are unfolding and I am very pleased with the direction in which they are moving. Thank you for all that you do to share the love of Christ with me and this community. Love in Christ, Ron Costen Prayer of the Day: Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Giant Cash For Causes Cards are back! Giant Gift Cards are back in the office to support Messiah Youth. If you have any questions or would like to purchase some, please see Dana or Your Church Lady. Let’s support our Youth!!! Thank You…

The music and service was magnificent!!! With the newly restored organ and Jeanne playing beautifully, Dan playing the flute and soloing, Elizabeth playing the harp like an angel, Jack Ferguson on drums. We were also treated to Silent Night, sung by Pastor Roggelin in German and accompanied by Pastor Fox on the guitar. We are so richly blessed by the voices and talents of our Messiah Choir and who gave of their time practicing, to give us all a service that brought tears to most everyone. Thank you again…
Tidbits!!!! Some people asked me to re run this from last year. I keep it in the car. It works… I use Recipe 1… 3 Cheap and Easy Formulas for Homemade Windshield De-Icer It’s that dreaded time of year. For those of us in the northern part of the country, the snow is falling, cars are stalling, and I start grumbling a bit more than usual. Each trip to town requires a 10-minute pre-start on my car, and the hated task of scraping my windshield. There are several options to help you with this chore, with some being more practical than others. See what has worked for others, and how you can take control of a frozen windshield and limited visibility for just a few pennies. Cover it. This no-brainer works the best. By keeping your windshield protected from the elements, you can effectively prevent ice build-up, frost, or snow from ever touching the glass. The easiest approach is to store your vehicle in a mild garage or storage area, but this isn’t an option for everyone. Another method is to place a lightweight tarp or double-folded old sheet directly over your windshield, and hold it down in place with bungee straps or weights of some sort. The next time you go out to your car, you can remove the cover, and any accumulated light frost should melt shortly via the defrost function of your car. (This won’t work well in areas with heavy snowfall, however, as the weight of the snow could make removing the cover a herculean task.) Prevent it. I prefer not having to mess with tarps and straps, so I’m especially tempted by the commercial ice-prevention formulas offered on the market. They seem so easy to use: just spray before you go to bed each night, and wake up to a frost-free windshield. Some obvious disadvantages to this method include the cost to purchase the products (which may cost up to $13 per bottle) and the questionable contents of some brands. The readers of the Dollar Stretcher have their own recipe for a safe, non-toxic version of a ice retarding solution: Simply mix 3 parts vinegar and 1 part water in a spray bottle. Apply to all the car windows (including side and rear) before going to bed at night. Remove it. If you find yourself in the impossible situation of having to scrape very thick ice or snow from you windshield, don’t fret! The right scraper can do wonders, but a nice homemade de- icing solution can help, too. The Stretcher has two more recipes for you, in the event you can’t get that nasty ice to budge: Recipe #1: Mix one part water to two parts rubbing alcohol. Apply to the window and watch it peel right off! Recipe #2: Use a bottle of 70% isopropyl alcohol (50% works, too, but not as well) with a few drops of dish soap. Apply liberally to the glass with a spray bottle. (Readers also recommend adding alcohol to the washer fluid container, with a 50/50 mix, to keep wiper lines from freezing up in the winter.) Winter won’t last forever, but it can feel like an eternity. Stop the scraping madness with a little planning and some homemade solutions designed to save time and money.
Church Lady Recipes: Here is a recipe I do every year for New Year’s Day, and it is always the favorite. “Fried-Sautéed” Sauerkraut (Simmer on top of stove or in an electric frying pan) 2 large onions sliced thin 2# bag of Sauerkraut 3 or 4 cloves of garlic minced Sauté garlic and onion in 4 TBS. EVOO. Then sprinkle with Smoked Paprika. Rinse & drain sauerkraut in a strainer. Shake off excess water. Add to onion mixture. Season to taste with Seasoned black pepper Garlic salt or garlic powder. Every time you go past the stove. If it looks like it’s drying out add water to keep moist. Simmer 5 to 6 hours. If you want it brown, take lid off and turn up heat…. Parmesan Basil Tomato Soup (Slow Cooker) A creamy parmesan basil tomato soup that practically cooks itself for you! Just add the ingredients into the slow cooker and watch the delicious smells of tomatoes and herbs waft through your whole house! Ingredients: 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup chopped onions 2 diced carrots 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce 2 (28 ounce) cans san marzano tomatoes ¼ cup EACH roasted garlic cloves AND sun-dried tomatoes 1 tablespoon sugar ¼ teaspoon dried basil ½ teaspoon italian seasoning 4 cups broth (vegetable or chicken) 1 parmesan rind (optional) 1 bay leaf 3 tablespoons basil pesto [5] 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 cup packed fresh basil leaves 1-2 cups half and half parmesan cheese + grilled cheese sandwich, to serve
Directions: 1. Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until they start to turn translucent, about 2-3 minutes. Add the carrots and continue to cook for 1-2 minutes, stir them around so they cook evenly. 2. Transfer the cooked veggies into a 6 quart slow cooker or larger. Add the tomato sauce, tomatoes, roasted garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, sugar, dried basil, italian seasoning, broth, parmesan rind, bay leaf, basil pesto, and balsamic vinegar. Cover and cook on the low setting for 6-8 hours for the best flavor or 3-4 on the high setting for a quicker meal. 3. Fish out the bay leaf and parmesan rind. Add the basil leaves to the slow cooker, stir to combine and using an immersion blender, blend the soup till smooth or to your desired consistency. If you don’t have a stick blender, transfer the soup in batches into a blender and blend. Stir in 1 cup of half and half and taste. If desired add more half and half to preference. We like it with 1 cup but you can certainly add more to your preference. 4. Top bowls with parmesan cheese and serve with grilled cheese or cheese croutons. White Wine Chicken Stew Ingredients 4 slices bacon, cut into 1/8” strips. 1 lb. chicken wings 2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken thighs; cut in-half horizontally and trimmed. 4 carrots, peeled and cut into ½-inch pieces 1 onions, diced 1 celery rib, minced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, minced ½ teaspoon smoked paprika 5 cups unsalted chicken broth, divided 1 1/8 cup dry white wine, divided into 1 cup and 1/8 cups 2 teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 1 tablespoons sections 1/3 cups all-purpose flour 1 lb. small new red potatoes, washed & quartered Garnish: 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
Instructions 1. Place oven rack to lower-middle position and preheat oven to 325 degrees F. 2. Cook bacon in a Dutch oven, over medium-low heat, until bacon browns then transfer bacon to a large bowl. Turn heat to medium-high. 3. In small batches, and without crowding the pan, sear the chicken wings and thighs in the bacon fat. If more fat is needed, add 2 tablespoons canola oil. Place seared chicken in the bowl with the bacon. 4. Reduce heat to medium and place the carrots in the Dutch oven and cook carrots until softened. Add the diced onion and celery and cook until onion is translucent and celery has softened. Add minced garlic and cook 30 seconds until it is fragrant and bloomed. 5. Increase heat to medium-high. Add 1-cup wine, 1-cup broth and Worcestershire Sauce. Scrape the brown bits from the bottom of the pan and bring the mixture to a boil. Cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid reduces to ¼ cup and vegetables start to sizzle, 12-15 minutes. 6. Add butter and stir to melt. Sprinkle the vegetables with flour and stir. 7. Gradually add the remaining 4 cups of broth, thyme and smoked paprika then whisk until smooth. 8. Add quartered potatoes; bring to a low boil. 9. Turn off heat. Taste the stew and season with salt and pepper, if needed. 10. Transfer stew to the oven. Cook, uncovered, for 30 minutes, stirring once halfway through cooking. 11. Transfer pot to stovetop and scrape fond off sides of pot with wooden spoon into the stew. Stir well. Add chicken thighs and wings and bacon. 12. Return pot to oven and continue cooking, uncovered, 45 minutes or until chicken and vegetables are fork-tender. Stir occasionally. 13. (At this point the stew can be refrigerated, covered, up to 2 days.) 14. Before serving, discard wings (see *Note) and add 2-4 tablespoons white wine. Garnish with chopped parsley. Please remember look around, reach out to someone if they look lost. You may be the reason they are here. Winter is a difficult time for a lot of people.
