Post Secondary Education ▪ When we say “college”, we are referring to any education after high school. ▪ College is possible for every High School graduate ▪ Community College and Technical College only requires a standard HS diploma or GED ▪ 4-Yr. College is NOT right for everyone. ▪ Find a program right for you! ▪ We think EVERY student should leave high school with a plan for some type of post-secondary training or education.
College Applications ▪ How many college applications are enough? ▪ Apply to 4 - 8 colleges ▪ Reach School – “Dream” – All highly selective and schools where you are in the bottom 25% of admitted students. ▪ Target School – “Reality” – Your stats place you at the 50 th percentile. ▪ Safety School – You are in the top 25% of admitted students. ▪ Research schools to make sure it is a good FIT. ▪ Check out the “Freshman Profile” ▪ Does it offer programs of interest to you?
College Applications - Continued ▪ All applications are ONLINE. ▪ Application fees are $30 - $80 each! ▪ College Application Fee Waivers – Available to students who took the SAT with a fee waiver (CollegeBoard.org) or from guidance counselor (NACAC) ▪ Available to students who qualify for free or reduced lunch, or state/federal aid programs ▪ Take small steps, completing one application at a time. ☺ ▪ Come to Rotary Futures to use our College Application checklists for all major Florida schools!
The Common Application ▪ The “Common App” is an online applications used by many but NOT all colleges/universities. ▪ Once it is completed, you can apply to any of the member colleges (for a fee). ▪ Supplemental information and essays may be required in addition to the Common App info/essays ▪ Transcripts are uploaded to the Common App after you provide your guidance counselor’s email. ▪ PLEASE go to each college’s website to review their Admissions Guidelines! ▪ It is important to understand the requirements and the admissions steps for each college.
Institutional Applications ▪ Colleges may have their own “institutional” application on their website. ▪ Sometimes, these applications tend to be simpler than the Common application. ▪ Most state universities have their own institutional applications. ▪ Use our College Application checklists to determine which application is best; we have done the work to see which applications are simplest! ▪ Many colleges will accept multiple applications. ▪ There is NO preferred application. All applications are equal. ▪ Please DO NOT apply to the same college with multiple applications. ▪ PLEASE go to the college’s website to review their Admissions Guidelines!
College Essay Workshops • Need help deciding which essay prompt to select? Need help deciding on your topic? Need someone to proofread your essay and give you input? • Come to Mrs. Joyner’s college essay workshops, offered weekly in Rotary Futures. • Students may also stop by to chat about their essays with Mrs. Joyner. • Mrs. Joyner is a former VHS AP English teacher. In recent years, she has worked with many area students on college admissions essays. • Caitlin.Joyner@sarasotacountyschools.net • Rotary Futures – 941-480-3178 ➢23
EMAIL • STUDENTS – ▪ If you do not have one, create a PROFESSIONAL email address. ▪ Check it EVERY DAY! ▪ Check your Junk/Spam Folder, too. ▪ Colleges WILL use your email address to communicate important information. ▪ Your email address will be VERY important in the scholarship process, too.
Check Your Transcript on the Family Access Portal • Did you take classes at SCF? • Grades are only posted to your VHS transcript upon receipt of an official SCF transcript. ▪ Tip – When ordering, send by email to the registrar, Debra.Colombo@sarasotacountyschools.net ▪ Email Mrs. Colombo to make sure she has received the transcript. • Order on SCF website – Cost is $7.00 • SCF courses/grades must be on the VHS transcript before transcripts are sent to colleges/universities. ➢25
Transcript Requests Rotary Futures handles transcript requests. ▪ Form available on the VHS website > Resources > Venice High Downloads. Hard copies available in Rotary Futures. ▪ Depending on the college, transcripts are sent… ▪ Electronically by the registrar ▪ Paper hard copies printed by the registrar ▪ Through the Common or Coalition Application ▪ Your School Counselor will upload the transcript once you enter their email address on the Common or Coalition Application. ▪ Self-Reported – completed and submitted by Student ▪ Complete ONE transcript request form and return to Rotary Futures. We will update form as you request additional transcripts.
Self-Reported Transcripts (Completed by the Student) ▪ Nine State Universities are using Self-reported Transcripts ▪ EIGHT State Universities use the SSAR – Self-Reported Student Academic Record. ▪ UCF uses the SPARK – Self Provided Academic Record for Knights ▪ Students list all courses and grades that have been attempted, or will be attempted, for high school credit, and then they link the Self-Reported Transcript to the college application. ▪ Since accuracy is critical, you must have a copy of your high school transcript available to use as a reference when you create your Self-reported Transcript. ▪ USE THE TRANSCRIPT ON THE FAMILY ACCESS PORTAL ▪ Report final grades and not plusses or minuses. ▪ Review instructions and FAQs or visit Rotary Futures ☺
Dual Enrollment • College applications and Self-Reported Transcripts will ask you to list ALL classes you plan to complete this school year (your Senior schedule). • If you are taking classes at SCF, make sure to list the classes you plan to take 2nd Semester! • If you have to take a different class, you will contact the college or university to let them know you made a change. • Even though SCF grades will be on your final VHS transcript, final SCF transcripts must be sent directly to the college you plan to attend. • Order online – www.scf.edu
SAT / ACT Test scores are NOT on your official transcript! ▪ Some colleges allow students to Self-Report test scores and submit official scores if admitted. Review the college’s admissions guidelines to understand the process. ▪ Most colleges will require official scores be sent as part of the admissions process. • Send 4 FREE when you register for the SAT or ACT • Cost $12 - 13 per school to have them sent later ▪ We strongly recommend that a student take BOTH tests. ▪ You may do better on one, and colleges will consider either test. ▪ College scholarships may require SAT or ACT scores. ▪ State Colleges (SCF) use scores for advisement only.
SAT / ACT – Continued ➢Register online – SAT: www.collegeboard.org – $55.00 ACT: www.act.org – $60.00 ➢ NO universities in Florida require the optional essay or writing. Check out-of-state college websites for test requirements. ➢ Students who qualify for “free or reduced lunch” are eligible for a waiver of the test fees. Waivers are available in Rotary Futures.
Recommendations ▪ The only Florida public universities that require letters of recommendation are Florida Poly, New College and FAMU. ▪ Some schools may ask for them later if student is deferred. ▪ Ask your counselor or teacher before sending them a recommendation request through the Common App. ▪ You MUST give your references AT LEAST 10 working days notice. ▪ Colleges may call counselors, teachers and club sponsors to verify information. ☺
