CLOVERDALE LEARNING CENTRE Success Is The Only Option PHONE: 604-574-3615 FAX: 604-574-9803 EMAIL: CLOVERDALELC @SURREYSCHOOLS.CA MR. VIM VALERA, PRINCIPAL APRIL 2018 NEWSLETTER A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Students of the Cloverdale Learning Centre: It is hard to believe that it’s already April and we only have several more weeks of school left in this year. Students and staff have been working hard over the past few months as we continue to implement some new ideas at CLC. Along the way, we’ve also had some fun. The staff organized an amazing Christmas lunch for our students just before Winter Break and we were fortunate to have guests from the community and the school district join us for this wonderful event. Students have had the opportunity to participate in field trips to Science World and the Capilano Watershed and those that did attend had many positive comments about their experience. We have also had a presenter come in and speak to our students about the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and student nurses from the Douglas College Nursing Program did two presentations – one on teen mental health and one on the impact of sleep, nutrition and chemicals on brain development. As you can see, our students are learning outside of their classrooms as well as in their academic classes! Interim reports were handed out in early April, just after Spring Break and I hope the parents, and students, all had a chance to see the progress being made in classes. With only nine weeks of classes left, we are encouraging students to stay focused on their learning so they can reach the goals they have set for themselves for this year. Term 3 is coming to an end with formal report cards and parent-teacher interviews on April 25 and we hope parents take the opportunity to come in and speak with teachers about their child’s progress this year. With graduation and year-end coming up very quickly, the staff are putting in many extra hours preparing for a memorable end to the school year, while simultaneously looking forward to the next school year. As we get ready to implement a new Grade 10 curriculum, students and parents may see a slightly different approach to learning and assessment at CLC. Our staff have been working very diligently to ensure that the transition is smooth and has minimal impact on student learning. Some important dates to mark down in your calendars: Wednesday April 25 Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews Wednesday May 30 Final PAC Meeting (last one of the year) Wednesday May 30 Surrey Schools Aboriginal Honouring Ceremony Thursday May 31 Social Studies Field Trip to Victoria Tuesday June 14 Commencement and Graduation Ceremony Thursday June 21 Final day to complete courses for this year’s Grads Thursday June 21 Year End Celebration for students Please check your emails regularly for more information about the Graduation Ceremony. We would also like to request that you call the office and ensure that we have a current/correct email address for you on file. Thank you for your continued support for your child’s education. The end of the school year is fast approaching and it is an important time for students to plan their time wisely. We would like to remind everyone that if you are finished using a book from the school library or workbooks from class that they please be returned promptly when no longer actively being used, as other students may need those resources. ALL school materials must be returned before the summer unless you will be returning in September and have gotten the approval of the library to take something home over the summer. We do encourage those interested to sign-out plenty of summer reading. Graduates that still need their photo taken for the school grad wall: The camera & lights will be set up again April 23 to 26 from 9am to 4pm and to 7pm on Wednesday April 25th during parent-teacher meetings. Please leave plenty of time to do your photo. Those that have already had their photo taken and completed all their courses will receive a copy via email as the backlog of photos can be processed. Lastly we plan on once again having a school gown and cap available at the Langley Walmart for interested graduates to schedule a photo session with a professional in June. Details will be announced in a May letter mailed home and posted on the grads social media group. SEYMOUR – CAPILANO WATERSHED FIELD EXPERIENCE - Tracey Lane We recently were one of the lucky few schools who were able to get a behind the scenes view of the Seymour – Capilano Water Treatment Facility and Watershed. The field experience was excellent with a trip to the dam to learn about where our water comes from before heading to the hatchery to learn about how the salmon and the trout are helped back up past the dam. Despite the wet spring the weather cooperated with us so we were able to enjoy our walk in the old growth forest in order to get some great pictures for our photo contest. After that we headed back to the treatment facility to learn about how our water is monitored and the pressure adjusted as the need increases and decreases. We met a chemist working on ensuring our water is some of the purest in the world before touring the facility and seeing how water is treated with Ultra Violet lights. This was a fantastic trip to learn about the importance of water conservation and what we can do so we don’t end up like Cape Town which is out of water! Biggest tips we can pass along: Brown is GOLDEN don’t water your grass in the summer. It’s a weed it will come back and pass the word to your neighbours. Brown is the new green! Turn off your tap while brushing your teeth Install low flow shower heads and shorten your showers Only run the dishwasher and washing machine when full Use a rain barrel to store water for your garden plants Cloverdale Learning Centre, #200, 5658–176th Street, Surrey,B.C. TRACK & FIELD - Tracey Lane Once again, we are out on the track with the other high schools representing CLC and all the other Learning Centres. We are the only Learning Centre with a team, so a big congratulations to our team members. So far, this year it has been a wet season which definitely makes it hard to keep our muscles warm before our run or throwing events. To date we have competed in the 1500m, 800m, 100m, discus and the race walk. It is exciting seeing our athletes competing on the track and we are looking forward to the Surrey District Meet the first week in May! SOCIAL JUSTICE, ENGLISH AND P.E. LEADERSHIP CO-OP - Tracey Lane Our C0-OP students continue to participate in many events in the community including our field experiences to Science World, the Seymour-Capilano Watershed tour and continuing our Lend-A-Hand activities helping clean up our local park for the city of Surrey. We are also excited to be a part of the Cloverdale Traditional Elementary school’s track attack week. Our students are busy prepping to be track coaches helping out as the elementary students learn how to run and throw in preparation for their track meet. We have also participated in the Surrey School District Racism Symposium where we learned from a variety of people, their experiences with racism and how they are working today to make the world a better place. The Symposium also gave us the chance to see the band “A Tribe Called Red”. It was a great end to an informative day. We look forward to more fun activities with the Co-op class including the big field trip to Victoria and organizing a wrap up party for CLC students in June.
