China Euro Vehicle Technology AB Developing cars for a different tomorrow Börje Grandin Vice President Electric Propulsion Systems
CEVT is an innovation center for the Geely Group > Started 2013 > A Swedish registered company, owned by Geely(ZGH), located at Lindholmen Science Park in Gothenburg. > Currently keeping some 2000 people busy. > Aprx 3B SEK annual investment. > Offices in Gothenburg and Trollhattan About CEVT
Zhejiang Geely Holding Group – CEVT’s role Owned by Geely Holding Group Operates under GAG Delivers technology to GA, LYNK & CO and Volvo Cars
Electrification Strategy > PHEV first – HEV second > Single E-motor hybrid solution > All HV systems in the front > Short HV lines and easier installation > HV Battery placed centrally > Crash safety > No impact on tank or luggage volume > E-motor on top of a standard gearbox > High commonality with standard gearbox > Same powertrain installation as non-hybrid
Electrification of Transmission: > Based on high-volume 7DCT transmission > Only few added components > Motor attached to even input shaft > E-drive and regen on gears 2, 4 and 6 > Hybrid drive on all gears 390 Nm
The Energy Challenge
Challenge increases Customers are buying larger and more powerful cars US market data Global weight data China market data Data source US EPA Data source Lee Schipper, University of California Berkeley Data source ICCT
Taking weight out of the equation? Kinetic energy recovery reduces the importance of weight, however size matters! Electrification enables regeneration of acceleration power. If we would have 100% efficiency weight would not effect energy consumption. Power = m*a*v Larger vehicles require higher power higher energy consumption Power needed on a flat road 25,0 SUV Sedan 15,0 Power [kW] 5,0 -5,0 0 20 40 60 80 100 Speed km/h
The Cost Challenge Electrification is needed, how do we make it affordable? 08/02/2018
Electrification is needed, size of the battery? Daily driving distance to determine the installed capacity? 50- 100km range covers a large part of customers daily driving. Customer surveys indicate that 80km range would satsify most customers… today Chinese study of driving behaviour 2015 08/02/2018
Range needed for a BEV? The size of the battery for long distance travelling should cover the range between coffee breaks With fast charging the car can be charged while the driver takes a natural break. Expectation is that three hours of driving should be covered. ~400km 08/02/2018
What is the cost of the future PT? Cost challenge is mainly connected to battery size Powertrain relative cost estimation 2025 2,2 Different customers will 2 choose different powertrain 1,8 solutions. Relative Cost 1,6 PHEV competetive for long 1,4 range 1,2 1 Assumptions: Same power levels on all PT. 0,8 PHEV assumed 50% power from e-motor. 0,6 100 200 300 400 500 Range [km] BEV pwt 50 km PHEV pwt 100 km PHEV pwt 08/02/2018
How do we reach an affordable cost? Electrification technology is not mature. We need to cut cost by optimising and finding economy of scale Example High voltage batteries: numerous solutions of cells, modules and battery packs. The automotive industry and in the end, the customer will benefit from standards High voltage Cells 08/02/2018
How do we reach an affordable cost? Further integration is needed in order to reduce cost • Combining functions into one unit is a must. • Integrated Inverter/e-motor • Combined Charger & DCDC • 12V battery combined with High voltage battery • Inverter & Charger • etc… many combinations possible • As volumes increase unique solutions does make sense. Modularity might not be the sole answer to cutting cost 08/02/2018
How do we reach an affordable cost? PHEV & HEV allow us to reduce cost by optimising the ICE Expensive technology aiming at low load efficiency can be removed Low speed torque is also less interesting Cost reductions possible 08/02/2018
What is needed in the future? Significant research and development is needed! • Increased power & energy density is needed from HV batteries • Improved power density from e-motors • Increased temperature tolerance from HV batteries, e-motors and power electronics • Improved charging infrastructure • Standardised wireless energy transfer 08/02/2018
Conclusions >Electrification is here to stay >Cost of electrification will come down with new innovation >A diversity in Powertrain technology in the near future is to be expected CEVT is dedicated to finding the solutions bringing us into the future
