JOHANN JACOB FROBERGER AT THE ORGAN AND THE HARPSICHORD It is difficult to overestimate the importance of Johann Jacob Froberger (1616- 1667) within the rich tradition of seventeenth-century keyboard art. Through his travels and wide contacts intimately familiar with the Italian, the French, the South-German as well as the North-German traditions, he forged a strong and truly cosmopolitan ‘European’ keyboard style. This found compositional expression both in harpsichord music (the suites, most of the toccatas) and in organ music (some toccatas, principally the fantasias ricercars, canzonas and capriccios). The performance of this repertoire forms a particularly fascinating challenge. Repertoire list: Toccata II in d Toccata III in G Toccata V in d (da sonarsi alla Levatione) Toccata VI in g (da sonarsi alla Levatione) Toccata XII in a Toccata XIV in G Fantasia I in C (sopra ut re mi fa sol la) Fantasia IV in G (sopra sol la re) Ricercar VII in d Canzona I in d Canzona V in C Capriccio VIII in g Capriccio XIV in e Capriccio XVI in F Suite VII in e Suite XII in C (Lamento Ferdinand IV) Suite XIX in c Suite XX in D (Méditation sur ma mort future) Suite XXX in a (Plainte pour passer la mélancolie) Lamentation Ferdinand III ASSOCIAZIONE DI PROMOZIONE SOCIALE “MONS. PIETER DIRKSEN Pieter Dirksen performs as soloist on both harpsichord and organ and as continuo player with diverse chamber ensembles. He completed his musicological studies with honours in 1987 and since then published widely about baroque keyboard music. He received his doctorate ‘cum laude’ with a dissertation on the keyboard music of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, which was awarded the Dutch Praemium Erasmianum (1997). Further books have been devoted to Bach's Art of Fugue (1994), Sweelinck (essays, 2002) and Scheidemann (2007), and critical editions appeared with music by Bull, Sweelinck, Cornet, Scheidemann, Düben, Buxtehude, Reincken, Lübeck and Bach. Both as a player and as musicologist he is considered a leading authority on keyboard music before 1750. Pieter Dirksen is co-artistic leader of Combattimento and plays continuo with several other orchestras, soloists and opera companies. He appeared in most European countries, the United States and Canada, and regularly gives masterclasses in chamber music and keyboard playing. He taught at conservatories and organ academies in (a.o.) Göteborg, Cambridge, Palencia, Moskou, Leipzig, Haarlem, Smarano, Piteö, Leufsta Bruk, Cuenca and Wolfenbüttel. As a soloist he specializes in the rich seventeenth-century North- European repertoire as well as in the music of J.S. Bach and Domenico Scarlatti. Pieter Dirksen is organist of the 1650 Severin organ in Cuijk. This year his new critical edition of Froberger’s suites and tombeaus will appear at the Henle Verlag. www.pieterdirksen.nl ASSOCIAZIONE DI PROMOZIONE SOCIALE “MONS.
