welcome to music at the royal hospital school 2017 / 18 Music at RHS The challenge becomes greater each year to surpass the many musical highlights of the previous season - the mesmerising moments of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, the pulsating beats of the BBC Big Band, the stupendous cacophony of 700 primary school pupils beatboxing with Dominic Peckham and hugely impressive joint concert with the Royal Marines Training Band. Well, we’ve done it again! Over the next few pages, you will see a greater selection of concerts, recitals, masterclasses and workshops than ever before. We are extremely proud of our music making and the huge breadth and variety we offer our pupils, as well as engaging with communities in the surrounding area. If you are planning your first visit to the School, or you are a returning regular concert goer, you cannot fail to be impressed by the combination of the impressive standard of musicianship of our pupils and the magnificent backdrop of the School’s riverside location. With more than 50 events in the School’s outstanding concert venues, music at RHS relies on the assistance of a huge range of sponsors, supporters, parents and pupils. We offer our sincere thanks to each and every one, as their invaluable contributions, together with those of the performers, help to make RHS such a unique and special place. In addition to hearing the monumental RHS chapel organ played live, large screens will enable the children to see the organists’ hands and feet at work, and with the aid of a portable camera we will take a virtual tour inside the organ and discover exactly what lies behind those pipes that we see from the front. The sessions will be based around Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals and in order to get the best out of the experience, we will provide schools with learning resources and ideas to enable the children to prepare prior to their visit to the chapel. These will include a short video introduction to the organ; the music which the children will hear on the day; a creative writing and artwork project inspired by animals big and small; and a simple, fun song about the organ performed to a familiar tune. To book your school place on either of these two sessions please contact the Music School for more information. ©Jet Photography 7PM (pre-concert The Holbrook Choral Society | Royal Hospital School Chapel Choir drinks from Chamber Choir | Show Choir | plus pupil-led ensembles 6.30pm) Conductors: William Saunders, Andrew Cantrill-Fenwick & Edward Allen Organ: Andrew Cantrill-Fenwick SCHOOL CHAPEL When 750 pupils and a further 100 teachers and other members of staff sing together each morning in chapel it is often referred to as the ‘‘Holbrook Sound”.
