Returning/Continuing Students University Accommodation and Private Renting As you settle into life as a new student, it won’t be long before you’re thinking about your second year at University, and with that comes a wide range of options for student accommodation. University accommodation is now available to students in all years of study, meaning that anyone wishing to return to Northumbria’s accommodation after their first year will be most welcome. Current students who book their accommodation early will be able to take advantage of the best offers and availability on all University residences. The Accommodation Returning / Continuing Offer is usually promoted in October and November, and is a great opportunity for groups of friends to reserve rooms in their preferred residence for their second or third year of study. However, we do recognise that the majority of continuing students will choose to live in privately rented accommodation for at least one year, and Newcastle certainly has lots to choose from, with a surplus of rooms available throughout the city. For those looking to live in private accommodation, there’s certainly no shortage of options, and private landlords will be promoting their housing offer to students at every opportunity. In addition to this, the Accommodation Office distributes two independent student housing magazines to all resident students. Packed full of properties to rent and top tips on what to look for, we also complement the magazines with our flat finding guide on the Private Accommodation section of our website. With so much on offer, the Accommodation Office is always on hand to help guide you to find your perfect home. Anyone who needs further housing advice is welcome to attend a drop in session at Northumbria’s Accommodation Office between 3 – 4pm, Monday to Friday (term time only). Tip: We strongly recommend that you do not make a long term commitment to a privately rented property by simply viewing it on the internet. Only sign up to a contract after arrival and once you have inspected the property in person. 14

Green Travel NewcastleGateshead is very well served by public transport. Not only is this form of travel a ‘greener’ way to get around campus, it also allows access to places like the coast, the countryside and other shopping areas such as the Metro Centre. We’ve got great Metro (light rail) and bus links with fantastic discounts for students. You can see just how good this is on the Nexus website – www.nexus.org.uk. This includes information on prices, maps and timetables. Why not show how green you are and sign up to our No Car Superstar challenge at www.nocarsuperstar.co.uk where you could win a bicycle. Cycling is both a great way to help the environment and take part in healthy exercise. More and more cycle lanes are being introduced to the area and across our campuses we have over 500 spaces to park your bicycle. We also have free bicycle tune-up and advice sessions on campus. Newcastle also has a major bike recycling facility where you can buy great re-conditioned bikes, saving them from being scrapped, access cycle maintenance classes and cycle training. You can find more information at www.recyke-y-bike.org Good practice for better cycling: Get some training if you are new to cycling Be seen – wear a hi visibility vest and use lights when dark, available at discounted rates in our Student Unions’ shops Wear a helmet Always lock your bike and remove the lights when parked at University, the University will issue you with a free D-lock if required 18
