               editions
The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig
van Beethoven. By then all of his piano sonatas will be available
in high-quality cutting edge Bärenreiter Urtext editions, edited
 by Jonathan Del Mar.

Del Mar, a worldwide authority and acclaimed Beethoven
specialist, has meticulously examined every available source and
evaluated many impressions of prints issued during Beethoven’s
lifetime. The works appear with a musical text at the forefront
of musical scholarship, accompanied by a Critical Commentary
covering all alternative readings and editorial decisions.

It need hardly be added that each edition contains an elegant and
spacious engraving and practical page turns, the emphasis always
being to reflect the character of the music in the best possible
way. Detailed Introductions on the genesis and significance of
each work are supplemented by valuable suggestions regarding
 period performance practice.

Jonathan Del Mar (*1951) is a conductor and musicologist. His
edition of Beethoven’s nine symphonies, likewise published by
Bärenreiter (1996-2000), caused a sensation and has been used
by leading conductors ever since. Further Bärenreiter Urtext
editions of Beethoven’s works have been edited by Del Mar
including the Piano Concertos and Triple Concerto, the Cello
Sonatas and several string quartets. He has also produced fine
Urtext editions of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto and Symphony No. 7
as well as the Elgar Cello Concerto.

Most listeners associate “ragtime” with the music of Scott Joplin, one
of the earliest African-American composers to straddle the divide
between classical and popular music. It was Joplin who brought this
musical style to the pinnacle of perfection.
The term “ragtime” stems from “ragged time” and describes the con-

This collection offers a deeper insight into Joplin’s art; a combination

Bartók’s voluminous output for the piano contains a great many
exquisite masterpieces at every level of difficulty. This collection
gathers together easy to moderately difficult pieces, including a wide
variety of dance forms and folk-music miniatures. Players can coax
magical sounds from the instrument using a varied refinement of touch
such as silently depressed keys or can even play in two keys at once
(bitonality). In addition, all of this provides a stimulus for improvisation.

This collection is a welcome addition to the repertoire used in music
schools and private lessons and will, of course, appeal to all lovers of
Bartók’s music. Besides familiar works, it also contains several that

Claude Debussy had difficulties finishing his last major work, the
Sonata for Violin and Piano. This can be seen in the many drafts BÄRENREITER URTEXT
which have been handed down and the fact that the cycle for which
it was conceived was left unfinished. The melancholy work originated Edited by Douglas Woodfull-Harris

contains many rhythmic errors. The non-autograph metronome
marks and the discrepancies between the separate violin part and Contents:
the violin part in small print in the piano score are two problems that Sonata / Minstrels
have affected the work’s later reception. Both are examined here in a
fresh light. Appendix:

In addition to the Sonata, this edition contains arrangements of Minstrels
La fille aux cheveux de lin, Il pleure dans mon cœur and Minstrels La fille aux cheveux de lin
by the American violinist Arthur Hartmann. It was Hartmann who Il pleure dans mon cœur
inspired Debussy to make his own arrangement of the well-known
piano piece Minstrels, also included in our edition.

The recently discovered proofs reveal how Léonard played the
concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February
1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show
how Léonard executed shifts of position and where he employed
open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings
and additional legato bowing are shown.

It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn’s
approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the
composer is confirmed in the latter’s correspondence following their
joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Léonard’s playing
and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany.

This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the
orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on
performance practice.

The editor, Clive Brown, is an acknowledged expert on Romantic
performance practice.

Bach’s Cello Suites – an artistic and
editorial challenge
When you think cello, you think of Bach’s immortal cello suites.

The suites take centre stage in the cello literature. They are timeless
and beautiful and accompany cellists from their student years up
through their professional career at the highest level.
                            Book 1
Musical Appropriately and not surprisingly there are countless editions of the
text suites. But the composer’s autograph has not come down to us. It
is lost and this circumstance has always been a major challenge for
editors. The four surviving handwritten sources and the original first
edition of 1824 differ in many details, the articulation and phrasing
                                                being particularly ambiguous.

At Bärenreiter, having published the New Bach Edition and presently
publishing the New Bach Edition-Revised, we feel particularly
committed to the cello suites. We have approached the editorial
Book 2 problems from several angles and have published editions that meet
Facsimiles the needs of students and professional performers alike.

This new edition, based on volume 4 of the New Bach Edition – Revised

Andrew Talle has fundamentally reassessed the relations between
the surviving sources and has drawn conclusions regarding their

The collection is perfect for creating short suites with an ad libitum
number of movements, and thus is ideal for school recitals, family
celebrations or street busking. These miniatures can also be used to
musically accompany literary readings or as soundtracks for video
sequences. The second violin part may also be played by a viola.

Urtext edition is meant to offer. It presents a solid and well-
researched musical text based on Brahms’ autograph as well as the
first edition, and draws on the autograph of the two-piano version
(composed six years later) for purposes of comparison. The edition
also contains a discussion of the work’s historical context and
performance practice as well as a comprehensive Critical Commentary
with an evaluation of the sources and alternative readings.

The editor, Daniel Boomhower, deals with the conflicting readings
between the string parts in the autograph engraver’s copy and those > To the shop

separate parts for that edition. Relevant readings from the two-piano

Unfortunately, not all the first editions have survived in
their entirety, hence the need to examine the surviving
editions which immediately followed in order to
reconstruct the complete musical texts. These reprints
are also significant because they document the wide
circulation that the music of Gesualdo, in particular his
madrigals, enjoyed from the beginning. Indeed, these
editions come from what was the main Italian centre
of publishing at the time, namely Venice, and were
produced by the best known music printers:
Alessandro Gardano’s heirs and Bartolomeo Magni.

The new critical edition
starts with a review of all the existing 16th- and 17 th-
century prints, and proceeds to evaluate their degree
of authoritativeness. The very first editions are the
preferred sources, since they were all issued under
the direct supervision of Gesualdo.
Molinaro‘s partitura is also taken into account, for its
unquestionable historical significance and as evidence
of Gesualdo‘s reception in modern times.
