Swimming festival – Friday 4 March (sorry no parents!)
It’s good to see some sun returning in time for our swimming festival tomorrow. The children have been
working hard to improve their skills and con dence. I will take lots of photos for you!

Try-athlon becomes Duathlon! – Friday 11 March (SWIM/RUN) limit 1 parent per child
We are constantly juggling with a changing environment to do the things we want to do. As we want
parents to be able to attend this event we have had to break it down into classes, to reduce the number
of adults to 25. (within our red level framework). We have also changed the event to a duathlon as we do
not have the staff numbers to manage the road crossing and the pool supervision. The Piwakawakas and
Pukekos will have their races before lunch starting at 11:45am. The senior hub will be broken down into
3 races starting at 1:30pm for the rest of the afternoon. Speci c times of your child’s/children's race will
follow next week.

We are looking to have a try-athlon in term 4 when life has returned to normal! Children are still welcome
to bring their bikes to school to enjoy using the bike track.

                                              Tarahoa Hub
Halfway through the term already… we can’t believe it! It has been a busy start to the year with
swimming and getting used to new routines. It has been so exciting seeing the progress that
children have made in their swimming ability and watching them learn new skills at SwimSafe last
week. In maths we have been looking at place value and are moving into learning addition
strategies. We have been busy doing art to decorate our classrooms and make them feel more
inviting. Kererū are getting prepped and looking forward to camp. We have been lucky enough to
have had Sue McNulty working with us as our teacher aide for the beginning of term. We have all
benefited from Sue’s knowledge and capability in being able to assist with students’ learning in our
hub. We are very grateful that she was able to fill this gap.

Dear Students, Parents and Families in Huatekerekere Hub

We welcome Georgie, Alba, Samantha, Jono, Frankie and Maddi to the Piwakawaka class. The
Pukekos welcome Aria, Lucy, Makenna, George, Charlie, Henry, Jackson, Oliver, Caty and Tom as
newly edged Pukekos!

Maths
The Pukekos have been grouped into three groups relating to their maths stage assessment. At
their level they are working on continuing to consolidate and build on their number knowledge as
well as problem solving in addition and subtraction across Monday - Thursday. For the next few
weeks we are having “Fraction Fridays” to reinforce the concept of fair shares and recognising
1/2s and 1/4s. To introduce this last week we had fun cutting up apples from our school apple
trees….. and snacking on them afterwards.
The Piwakawakas are continuing our work on the number bonds to ten. Our problem this week
has been that Mrs Long has made ten cupcakes and they are on two trays, how many are on each
tray?

Storytelling.
With each start of the year we like to revisit our Purakau, the legend that tells of the origins of our
local landscape and special connection to the mountains and Peel Forest. Chief Tarahoa and his
wife Hautekerekere arrived in search of new land to settle and grow their tribe, they found the
Rangitata river and the beautiful bush of Peel Forest. The legend tells of how they asked the atua
(gods) to become mountains on their demise, Chief Tarahoa becoming what we know as Mount
Peel, his wife Hautekerekere becoming Little Mount Peel. Their children in time became the big
trees of the forest and their grandchildren the mountains of the Four Peaks range; Fiery, Tripp,
Devils and Waihi.
Legends and traditional tales were historically passed through the generations by oral storytelling
and so it is a wonderful teaching method to employ to pass on our own local legend of the creation
of our special place.

Upcoming events
Swim festival- Friday 4th March (please send your child to school with two towels so they have
one to stay warm whilst not in the pool and the other for getting dry when they’ve nished.

Pip and Kay

All clubs now have their registrations open and you
can find these links on www.mchockey.co.nz. For
the last few seasons players from this area
(Mayfield, Mt Somers, Carew) have played for the
Tinwald Club in teams that have been known as
Tinwald Foothills that have been coordinated by
Richard Kidd at Mayfield School. If you have child/
ren that are interested in playing I recommend
registering with Tinwald Hockey Club and
then contacting Richard Kidd
(principal@mayfieldschool.co.nz, 303 6214) so that
they can make sure your child/ren will be placed in
a Foothills team.
