Welcome to the Capital Football 2011 Season A very warm welcome to everyone to the 2011 Capital Football season and, in particular, to our Premier League competitions. We particularly welcome back The Tradies club as naming rights sponsor of the Women’s Premier League and extend a warm welcome to The Rock Development Group who are the new sponsors of men’s Premier League football. The support of both of these sponsors is crucial in maintaining a viable competition in terms of standards and rewards for the competing clubs so thank you to both for adding their name to our competitions. Whilst on the subject of sponsors I’d also like to thank Derbystar for their continued support of the Premier League competitions through the supply of match balls to all competing clubs and TigerTurf, who installed the pitch at the Hawker Football Centre and who sponsor our club championship award. Season 2011 promises to be another exceptional year for football in the ACT and surrounding region. Our flagship competitions have undergone structural changes with teams leaving and joining the top flight. The men’s Rock Pre- mier League has been re-structured after ANU FC chose not to pursue Premier League football and will revert to a nine-club competition with two bye’s for each club throughout the season. In The Tradies Women’s Premier League Brindabella Blues have made way, after a tough season in the elite division to focus on building their playing ranks with a view to possibly moving back into the Premier League in later years. In their stead we welcome Gungahlin United, a young vibrant club with close links to Canberra City in the Rock Pre- mier League. Their appearance in the women’s competition means that we continue with an eight-club league and a 21-round format that proved very satisfactory last season. The 2010 Capital Football season was punctuated by the FIFA World Cup held in South Africa adding some top-class international football to the calendar and a chance for our players, officials and supporters to watch matches on their televisions and become inspired to take up, or follow, the local game. 2011 offers a similar opportunity in the Women’s game with the Matildas taking part in the FIFA World Cup to be held in Germany in June and July. They’ve been handed a tough draw with Brazil, Norway and the unknown quantity that is Equatorial Guinea standing in the way of a quarter final berth. But we believe they can do it! Keep an eye out during the season for news on where you can follow these matches on SBS. And finally I’d like to extend our appreciation to John Logue and Alan Bradbury for their contributions to the Board over the past years. John, in particular, has been a stalwart throughout the post Crawford Report years and seeing us through the unification of four organisations into a single entity as well as steering the Kanga Cup organising committee for eight years. We welcome two new Directors in James Selby and Eddie Senatore and will soon announce a new chair and deputy chair for the board and organisation. All that remains is for me to wish you and the referees all the very best for a successful 2011. Enjoy your football and I look forward to seeing you around the grounds during the year. Welcome to the Capital Football 2011 Premier League Season WELCOME FROM THE WOMEN’S LEAGUE STANDING COMMITTEE The 2011 season got off to a great start with the Women’s loop Federation Cup. Eight teams competed again this year and newcomers to Premier League, Gungahlin United, showed they are ready for the challenge of the year ahead. Belconnen United were this year’s champions defeating Woden Valley 3-1 on penalties after the score was 0 – 0 following extra time. It was an exciting game and the defence and keepers were outstanding. The Pre Premiership competition was also successful with most of the teams that will be playing this season nominating. For many teams this tournament is an opportunity to experiment with player positions and for novices and new recruits to have a run with their new team mates. It’s also a time for coaches both new and returning to try something new. Once more a good number of teams have nominated in the State League / Master’s competition and with the start of the season just around the corner, we are looking forward to what promises to be another successful season full of fun and great contests. We couldn’t have the great competitions we have without the efforts and dedication of our coaches, referees, volunteers and supporters. Thanks for your contribution to women’s football in Canberra. I hope you have an enjoyable season. Fran Sankey Chair—Women’s Standing Committee WELCOME FROM THE MEN’S LEAGUE STANDING COMMITTEE Capital Football looks forward to a revamped State League competition after the recommendations from the SL review were completed in 2010. There are ten State League competitions confirmed with ten teams in each competition. All clubs are anticipating strong even competitions. The Men’s Premier League has a new sponsor ROCK Development Group. Their sponsorship will be used as prize money apportioned to all four divisions with the final portion available to coach Development. Tiger Turf and Derbystar are continuing their sponsorship with the Men’s Premier League. The Federation Cup also has a new sponsor “loop” (Belconnen Markets), who have replaced long time sponsor Project Coordination. The Premier League clubs are all striving to break the dominance of Canberra FC and place some of the silverware in a different trophy cabinet in 2011. There has been the usual player movement in the off- season and some clubs now have a different make up and hope that they have the mettle to produce some exciting results. The Masters competitions continues to show strength for our senior players and now have an Over 45’s competition for the most mature masters. Clubs, players and referees look for ward to a competitive season to be played in a fair spirit. George Lemon Chair—Men’s Standing Committee 3

CANBERRA FC TOO HOT TO HANDLE Saturday 18th September 2010 McKellar Park, Belconnen Soccer Centre Canberra FC 6 (Danai Gapare 2’, 45’, Adam Spaleta 9’, 63’, Matt Grbesa 18’, Alex Castro 37’) Belconnen United 0 Referee: Richard Naumovski Crowd: 1,450 Valeri Medal: Adam Spaleta (Canberra FC) Canberra FC completed a second successive treble with a sensational 6-0 rout of perennial rivals Belconnen United in the 2010 Gatorade Premier League Grand Final at McKellar Park. The League champions were in stunning form and were 5-0 up by the interval, thanks to some quite brilliant goals, to which the Blue Devils simply had no response. Barely two minutes were on the clock when Danai Gapare chased a long ball down the left flank and cut back to send a swirling cross into the Belconnen area which totally outfoxed Rohan Shepherd in the Blue Devils goal to drop into the net. If that was a surprise to Scott Conlon’s team, what was to follow must have been like living a nightmare. With the flow of play all directed at Shepherd’s goal the lead was doubled before ten minutes had elapsed. Canberra FC was awarded a free-kick wide on the left hand side from where Adam Spaleta sent a venomous delivery into the area that slashed it’s way past Shepherd and into the top corner of the net. Barely eight minutes later and it was 3-0. Matt Grbesa advanced and, from 25 metres, chipped Shepherd who had been drawn off his line by the prospect of a cross to the far post. By this stage most of the crowd were rubbing their eyes in disbelief and that was further heightened with a fourth FC goal in the 37th minute. Jon Ison was the catalyst, the defender firing a laser-like cross into the penalty area where Alex Castro slipped his marker to loop a beautiful header over the stranded Shepherd and into the net. Adam Spaleta, who would be awarded the Walter Valeri medal as man of the match, turned provider again on the cusp of half-time, collecting a pass over the top of the flat Blue Devils defence and squar- ing a pass to the unmarked Gapare who had the easiest of tasks to tap into the empty net for a half- time score of 5-0. It was perhaps inevitable that the second half would not quite live up the incredible scenes of the first but the crowd remained and the supporters were treated to what was, arguably, the goal of the game in the 63rd minute. Adam Spaleta received a pass 35 metres from goal and unleashed an exocet of a shot that thundered past Shepherd and into the top corner of the net that was left shaking on its moorings by the sheer velocity of a quite stunning strike. Incredibly the same player hit an even harder shot ten minutes later that crashed off the underside of the bar, and seemingly crossed the line, only to be judged to have bounced clear by the match officials. With the game meandering towards it’s inevitable conclusion Ison and Belconnen substitute Tai Smith were sent off for their part in a melee that threatened to spiral out of control, but it didn’t take the gloss of a brilliant display by Canberra FC who were worthy champions. YEOMAN-DALE TREBLE SEALS CUP VICTORY Sunday 19th September 2010 Hawker Football Centre Woden Valley 5 (Erin Frewin 2’, Georgia Yeoman-Dale 23’, 56’. 88’ (pen), Ashleigh Palombi 29’) Belwest Foxes 3 (Snez Veljanovska 30’, Cian Maciejewski 45’, Hope Wilkins 73’) Referee: Sam Ockerby Crowd: 935 Murray Medal: Georgia Yeoman-Dale A hat-trick from speedy striker Georgia Yeoman-Dale led Woden Valley to a sensational 5-3 victory over the Belwest Foxes in The Tradies Women’s Premier League Grand Final at Hawker Football Centre on a sunny spring afternoon. The pace of Yeoman-Dale was too much for the Foxes defence to cope with and the feisty young forward was at the top of her game and could have gone home with six goals to her name following several decent chances that were spurned. Not that it mattered to the Julie Murray Medal winner who was clinical when needed. It took Woden less than two minutes to signal their intent, taking the lead in an unusual way. A shot from distance took a huge deflection and, after ‘keeper Melanie Luksa did well to readjust to claim the ball, it spilled lose for Erin Frewin to bundle into the net from close range. The dream start got even better in the 23rd minute when Yeoman-Dale reacted quickest to Isabella Boag-Taylor’s through ball, rode a challenge from a defender and skipped past Luksa to roll the ball into the empty net for a silky goal. Incredibly by the half-hour mark the underdogs were 3-0 ahead. Once more Yeoman-Dale was to the fore racing onto a pass, rounding Luksa out wide and crossing to an unmarked Ashleigh Palombi who headed into the almost gaping goal. The Foxes aren’t the champion team they are for nothing though and they hit back almost immediately. Hope Wilkins burst clear and squared a pass for Snez Veljanovska to finish high into the top-corner of the net. Before half-time the deficit was reduced to 2-3 when a defensive lapse allowed Cian Maciejewski to get clear and clip the ball past the advancing Gill Raymond. The next goal would prove crucial and it was Woden who got it. Inevitably, Yeoman-Dale was the pivot again, latching onto a Frewin goal kick that eluded everyone else to sprint clear of Hayley Buckingham, skip round Luksa and slide the ball into the open net to make the score 4-2. Just when it seemed that Woden had the game in the bag the Foxes responded again. Maciejewski hit a fierce drive towards goal that Raymond did well to parry before Wilkins reacted quickest to poke the ball home and put the match back into the balance. Everything was up for grabs but it was Woden, and the brilliant Yeoman-Dale, who had the last word. The striker got clear of the Foxes defence yet again and in the process of rounding Luksa once more was felled by the Foxes custodian. Luksa saw red for the challenge and Yeoman-Dale dusted herself off to slot the resultant penalty, claim the match ball, and make sure that Woden would claim the 2010 Tradies Women’s Premier League crown at the end of an epic battle played in front of an appreciative crowd. WODEN VALLEY STORM TO PATHWAY WIN WHILST TUGGIES TAKE UNDER-18 THRILLER AND OLYMPIC FLY HIGH IN UNDER-16 Premier Pathway League Saturday 18th September 2010 McKellar Park, Belconnen Soccer Centre Woden Valley 4 (Chris Ruiz, Lachlan Nichols, Bensah Afiabo, Gary Alexander) Belconnen United 1 (Josh Sands) Referee: Luke Withell Woden Valley were simply too strong for Belconnen United in the Premier Pathway League Grand Final running out comprehensive 4-1 winners in an exciting match at McKellar Park. The Valley side were 2-0 up by the interval thanks to a goal from skipper Chris Ruiz on 16 minutes and a second from Lachlan Nichols just after the half-hour mark. A third goal, bagged on 61 minutes by forward Bensah Afiabo had Woden in complete control of the match with the outclassed Blue Devils simply chasing shadows for much of the afternoon. They did give the home supporters something to cheer about though seven minutes after the third Woden goal when Josh Sands converted to give them some hope, but that was swiftly extinguished with fifteen minutes remaining when Gary Alexander finished the match off once and for all with a fourth Woden goal. Premier League under-18 Saturday 18th September 2010 McKellar Park, Belconnen Soccer Centre Tuggeranong United 3 (Andrew Lawrence (2), Sam Ramey) Woden Valley 2 (Jonathan Kipnis, Adrian Canizares) Referee: Matt Rynne Tuggeranong United scored three times in the final seventeen minutes of the match, coming from 0-2 down, to stun Woden Valley in the Premier League under-18 competition. Woden had looked set fair for the trophy when they roared into a two-goal advantage thanks to goals from Jonathan Kipnis and Adrian Canizares with United left floundering. However, the dismissal of the influential Mathew Kocic midway through the second stanza swung the match back in favour of Tuggeranong. United still had plenty to do though and were indebted to captain Andrew Lawrence for getting them back into the match in the 73rd minute. Lawrence, who was superb in midfield throughout, played a part in the build-up to the equaliser as well, struck by Sam Ramey six minutes from time. Barely two minutes later the comeback was complete when Lawrence added his second to send the United support wild. Premier League under-16 Saturday 18th September 2010 McKellar Park, Belconnen Soccer Centre Canberra Olympic 4 (Yusuf Kamara (2), Danny Brice, Michael Bornholt) Woden Valley 2 (Darcy Crosthwaite, Petar Varga) Referee: Alex McConachie Canberra Olympic may have ended the game with nine men, following the late dismissals of Matthew Murcutt and Josh Ratnam-Johnson, but they had already done enough to claim the under-16 crown with a 4-2 win over Woden Valley. The Olympic team showed plenty of spirit and determination to see off the fancied Woden Valley side who, despite goals from Darcy Crosthwaite and Petar Varga, were second best on the day. Yusuf Kamara starred for Olympic with a brace of goals whilst Danny Brice and Michael Bornholt, a regular supplier of goals throughout the 2010 season, added further gloss to the final score. It was a deserved win for Olympic who had beaten the minor premiers, Canberra FC, in the Major semi-final to advance to the Grand Final stage after ending the season in second place. 17
FOXES AND BLUE DEVILS CLAIM PREMIER CROWNS Premier League Reserves Sunday 19th September 2010 Hawker Football Centre Belwest Foxes 1 (Gemma Matheson) Belconnen United 0 Referee: Richard Brown Belwest Foxes edged out Belconnen United in a taut encounter at Hawker Football Centre to claim the Premier League Reserves title. A solitary goal, scored in the second half by Gemma Matheson, proved the difference between two evenly matched teams. Earlier, the Blue Devils Westfield W-League goalkeeper Jocelyn Mara had to be on top form to deny the Foxes with Sam Price in good form whilst at the other end Belwest custodian Melanie Luksa was well protected by a solid back four that was able to nullify the threat of Golden Boot Sarah Tutt. Belconnen had qualified for the final from fourth place on the ladder whilst Belwest Foxes had ended the regular season in second place. Premier League under-18 Sunday 19th September 2010 Hawker Football Centre Belconnen United 5 (Tahlia Backhouse (2), Brittany Smale (2), Brittany Tully) Woden Valley 2 (Meg McLaughlin (2)) Referee: Nunzio Rinaudo Doubles to Tahlia Backhouse and Brittany Smale were the highlight of a goal-fest as Belconnen United defeated Woden Valley 5-2 in the under-18 Premier League Grand Final. The Blue Devils took an early lead through a 4th minute Brittany Tully strike before Meg McLaughlin, Woden’s best player on the day, leveled the scores only three minutes later. Backhouse and Smale made it 3-1 to Belconnen at the interval and, despite Woden’s best efforts to force their way back into an entertaining match, the Blue Devils ran away with the match in the second stanza. Backhouse and Smale added their second goals, to take the score to 5-1, before a brilliant second from McLaughlin reduced the arrears, but that strike proved little consolation in the end as Belconnen, who were undefeated throughout the regular season, ran out worthy winners. 18

Conlon’s tenure ended in the most Sun 15 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium ignominious of ways as Belconnen were taught a football lesson on their Sat 21 Monaro Panthers @ McKellar Park own field in the Grand Final with age-old foes Canberra FC romping to a Sat 28 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 6-0 victory. That Belconnen also lost, on penalties, to Goulburn Strikers in the Federation Cup meant that there would be no silverware at June McKellar Park last season. But this squad still has plenty of talent and are Sun 5 Woden Valley @ McKellar Park more than likely to be top level contenders for honours again in 2011. The basis of last season’s team is still around with veterans Matt Valeri Sun 12 Goulburn Strikers @ Cookbundoon and Danny Macor still lacing up the boots for the cause. A plethora of Sat 18 Canberra City @ McKellar Park young talent has emerged from the Blue Devils junior ranks to push the older players for a start and this will no doubt please Forshaw as compe- Sun 26 Bye tition for places is liable to be a good thing. How they recover from the July disappointment of the denouement of 2010 could have a major bearing on how their season pans out, but you can be sure that under the astute Sun 3 Woden Valley @ Woden Park guidance of Forshaw they will be amply prepared for the challenges that Sat 9 Cooma Tigers @ Nijong Oval lay ahead. The Head Coach is tempering optimism though with some cautionary words. “Although this is a transition year we would hope to Sun 17 Canberra FC @ McKellar Park be competitive in all the games we play and will be looking toward a top Sun 24 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium four finish,” Forshaw said. “We have introduced some new players, some youth and retained have some experience in the squad, and how Sun 31 Tuggeranong United @ McKellar Park successful we are will depend on how well we can get the balance right August and how quickly the disparate parts gel together,” he added. With new signing Nicky Rogers adding punch up front and the acquisition of NIKE Sun 7 Canberra Olympic @ McKellar Park Chance Academy winner Tom Rogic anything is possible. Last May season began with little expectation on Pat Caggiano and his young team Sun 8 Canberra FC @ Hawker FC but, spurred on by the goals of off-season recruit Misko Naumoski, City strung together a series of excellent performances and settled into the Sat 14 Monaro Panthers @ Hawker FC last available finals spot in fourth place. From there they were unlucky to Sun 22 Tuggeranong United @ Hawker FC fall 1-2 to a Cooma Tigers team that were fired up on their return to the top-flight, thus ending City’s season prematurely. Blessed with some Sun 29 Woden Valley @ Woden Park outstanding talents including the mercurial genius of Futsalroo interna- June tional Pat Ross-Magee, City have enough in their locker to surprise many Sun 5 Goulburn Strikers @ Hawker FC of the traditional pre-season favourites. Defensively their numbers are not quite so impressive though and finding a solution to the age-old Sun 12 Bye problem of a rock-solid centre-back pairing on which to build any Sat 18 Belconnen United @ McKellar Park success is surely the number one priority for the City management as the new campaign approaches. Injuries derailed their progress at crucial Sat 25 Canberra Olympic @ Hawker FC times during the 2010 campaign and keeping a fit and healthy squad is July quite possibly up their with finding a defensive solution on Caggiano’s pre-season agenda. “We aim to be competitive in all of our matches and Sun 3 Goulburn Strikers @ Cookbundoon improve on week to week results from 2010,” Head Coach Caggiano Sun 10 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium commented. Their only significant loss from the squad that played some attractive, fluent football last term is holding midfielder Stuart Lacey. Sun 17 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium And, while there hasn’t been a huge influx of ‘name’ players for 2011 Sat 23 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 Caggiano has recruited wisely particularly from the lower leagues. In short whatever could be won was won as Canberra FC claimed the Federation Cup, coming from 0-2 down in the process, and Sun 15 Belconnen United @ Deakin Stadium League Championship before annihilating old foes Belconnen United 6-0 Sun 22 Canberra Olympic @ O’Connor in the Grand Final—on the Blue Devils own patch! And while many Sun 29 Cooma Tigers @ Deakin Stadium would be predicting a similar success story for new head honcho Rob Graham in 2011, the new coach has an unforgiving task of following up June two successive trebles. The loss of the talismanic Alex Castro to Cooma Sun 5 Bye Tigers is a big blow but some clever off-season recruiting may offset the departure of the player who scored 18 goals in 2010. A broken leg Sun 12 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium sustained in a pre-season tournament in Queensland will keep two-goal Sun 19 Tuggeranong Utd @ Deakin Stadium Grand Final scorer Danai Gapare sidelined for the entire campaign with his directness sure to be missed. For all that though Canberra FC will still Sun 26 Woden Valley @ Woden Park be the team to beat this season. From the backline forward they possess July a squad that is the envy of the rest of the competition and will take some knocking off their proud pedestal. “As a club we always have high Sun 3 Bye expectations,” Graham commented. “Obviously we’ll have to wait and Sun 10 Canberra City @ Deakin Stadium see how we go but if we don’t do well we can’t blame it on re-building as we have only lost one player. We still have Adam Spaleta, who is a Sun 17 Belconnen United @ McKellar Park standout all the time, and top players like Ian Graham, Josip Jadric and Sun 24 Canberra Olympic @ Deakin Ivan Pavlak. And keep an eye out for Ryan Reid, a tall central midfield player who we have high hopes for this season.” When all is said and Sun 31 Cooma Tigers @ Nijong Oval done it would still take a brave man to bet against Canberra FC . Every season Olympic enter the competition amongst the favourites to progress to the latter stages and, Sun 15 Cooma Tigers @ Nijong Oval more often than not in recent years, they have flattered to deceive. Last Sun 22 Canberra FC @ O’Connor season was a case in point with a terrific 3-1 win over Canberra FC offset by a number of poor performances that culminated in dropped points Sun 29 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium and a final Premier League position of sixth. The loss of Coach Ian Hey- June wood shortly after their 0-4 federation Cup loss to Belconnen United heralded the arrival of ACT Rockets Coach Dean Ugrinic and the amiable Sun 5 Tuggeranong United @ O’Connor Ugrinic will be looking forward to getting a full pre-season with his Sun 12 Woden Valley @ Woden Park charges under his belt. The midfield qualities of Englishman Andrew Ross was a huge bonus to Olympic last season with the tenacity and vision of Sun 19 Goulburn Strikers @ O’Connor the playmaker very much in evidence throughout the season. If Ross can Sat 25 Canberra City @ Hawker FC curb his sometimes volatile temper his impact can push Olympic to finals football and possibly even further. A 1-2 loss to Belconnen United in the Preliminary Sun 8 Belconnen United @ McKellar Park Final put paid to the Tigers hopes of repeating their 2006 title winning heroics but not before the Blue Devils had been given an almighty fright. Sun 15 Canberra Olympic @ Nijong Oval This season promises even more from the Cooma based team who, Sun 22 Bye while retaining the core of the team that performed superbly in the 2010 season, have signed the exquisite talents of the former Canberra Sun 29 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium Cosmos midfielder Alex Castro. Castro, arguably the most gifted player in June the entire Premier League structure, was in inspirational form for Sun 5 Monaro Panthers @ Nijong Oval Canberra FC last season guiding his former club to an historic second treble with some outrageous performances. His vision, skill and ability to Sat 11 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 pop up with the vital goal when required could be just what the Tigers Sun 19 Woden Valley @ Nijong Oval need to push them that little bit further and into the Grand Final. When Castro was last with Cooma the Tigers won the Grand Final. A case of Sun 26 Goulburn Strikers @ Cookbundoon history repeating maybe? On the downside though is the loss of the July talents of Cristobal Soza with the exceptional Chilean defender offering supporters a fleeting glimpse of his quality last term before continuing Sun 3 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium his round the world odyssey and twin strikers Scott Barsley and Daniel Sat 9 Belconnen United @ Nijong Oval Gecic. A squad bereft of a raft of top-shelf players, including the Aliffi brothers, Daniel and Andrew, flying winger Sam Taylor and top- Sun 15 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 scorer Brody Willis have also waved goodbye to erstwhile Coach Carlo Sun 22 Woden Valley @ Cookbundoon Aliffi. In his place steps Gerry Doran who has inherited a squad thin on numbers and, perhaps more vitally, thin on experience. If anything Sun 29 Bye though the Strikers can at least set their stall out for the future now by June investing their time and effort into gelling this group of teenage starlets into a team that could shake the Premier League. As usual the Strikers Sun 5 Canberra City @ Hawker FC are liable to be tough to beat on their own pitch at Cookbundoon. Their Sun 12 Belconnen United @ Cookbundoon home form in 2010 was generally good and if they can get some early results on the board at home then the possibility of some surprise points Sun 19 Canberra Olympic @ O’Connor should not be discounted. Any sort of injury jinx though, such as the one Sun 26 Cooma Tigers @ Cookbundoon that cursed the latter stages of their Premier League quest last season, is likely to be even more undesirable with numbers so thin on the ground. July Early pre-season results saw the Strikers beaten 1-4 by Tuggeranong Sun 3 Canberra City @ Cookbundoon United at Kambah with the United youngsters showing the Goulburn set- up what can be achieved with time and a little patience. A quick phone Sun 10 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium call to Tuggeranong Coach Darren Viskovich will tell Doran exactly what Sat 16 Tuggeranong United @ Cookbundoon to expect early on but perseverance, and a modicum of good fortune, Sun 24 Woden Valley @ Woden Park could help the Strikers prove the naysayers wrong.
