Club Manager’s Season Report 2021-22 by Ronnie Nathu --------------------------------------------------------------------- After the disappointments of the abrupt end to last season due to Covid resulting in the Easts Premiers being relegated to the Hazlett Trophy, Easts started the Premier season determined to regain Pearce Cup status and achieved this in emphatic style winning all its matches except for one two- day game which was drawn after enforcing the follow on. As a result, the Hazlett Trophy was secured with 41 points clear of second place. A good run in the T20 competition saw Easts progress to the semi-finals. The Premiers also regained the Cook Shield and look forward to defending the shield in the Pearce Cup two-dayers next season. The club boosted 20 men teams and 1 women’s team, resulting in 4 grade winners with Premiers (Hazlett), Masters (I Day Div 1), Leopards (1 Day Div 2), Goons (T20 Div 3) winning their respective grades. It secured the Royal Visit Cup at the Cricket Wellington Awards for the club with the most Aggregate points. The Club is extremely proud of the representative selection of 5 firebirds (Michael Bracewell, Fraser Colson, Lauchie Johns, Jamie Gibson and Luke Georgeson) during the season, three list A selections (Adam Leonard, Jed Wiggins and Josh Newport (CD)) and Jacob Madigan’s selection for the Wellington under 19s from the club. The following Easts players were recognised at the Wellington Cricket Awards • Luke Georgeson on being awarded the men’s fair play Bruce Murray medal. • Michael Bracewell on being awarded the Ford Trophy Player’s Player of the Year, Overall Players Player of the Year and the Kapura Men’s Allrounder of the Year. • Adam Leonard on being awarded the J Atkin Cup (best bowling in premier club cricket). 24
A particular highlight for the season was the celebration of club stalwart and life member Carl Gill’s 80th Birthday with an invitation cricket match made up of players current and past who have played with Carl. National television crews were also on hand (thanks to Andy Burt) to showcase this achievement. Carl continues to regularly turn out for the Easts Bulldogs in the 3rd Grade Div 7. Well done to the Bulldogs team for organising this event, it was a great night at the clubrooms. The junior club was pleased to see an increase in numbers, which saw Easts able to field 36 teams. This is the second year in a row we have seen an increase to our numbers. The club also saw an increase in the number of kids keen to attend the Riverbend camps in Hawkes Bay over summer with 7 teams attending at various times. The Easts junior committee with Paul Bracewell and Brian Gardner as co- convenors have done an outstanding of managing the junior section of the club. Sadly, this represents the last year of Paul’s involvement as co- convenor after 5 years in the role. We thank Paul and Sarah for their involvement and commitment to the role. The Club is appreciative of the Cricket Wellington’s Initiative to waive all affiliation fees this year in response to the Covid pandemic and as a result the Junior Club also waived all junior subscriptions for this season. We look forward to the 2021/22 season. The sudden ill health of Gordie mid-season created a number of immediate operational issues for the club, given Gordie has been running the club as a well-oiled machine for the last 27 years almost single-handedly and there was no ability to have a proper hand-over. As a result, there have been several administrative issues like ball collection, team selections and reporting of scores that have suffered this season, which the club will look to rectify in the new season. The Club is heartened by the offers of support for the club and concern for the well-being of Gordie from various past and current club members and the general Wellington cricket community. 25
Doug Pollock discusses the impact that Gordie has had on the club further in this report. Due to Gordie’s health he has decided to step down as Club Manager, but we are pleased that Gordie is keen and willing to be on the committee. The Club is now at a major crossroad and will need to consider the best operating model going forward to ensure the legacy that Gordie has established continues to develop. It is clear that Gordie is irreplaceable as a single club manager and that a new structure needs to be put in place to operate the club going forward. There are four distinct areas of the club operations that need to be addressed, with a number of tasks comprising each area, covering • Risk and Finance • Communication and Events • Facilities and Gear • Cricket Management The club will need to consider how best to resource these areas, particularly facilities and gear and cricket management. Whilst there are no immediate answers on how to address all the above areas, the Club will need greater engagement from its members. There will be specific tasks that members will need be involved with, to spread the load by breaking tasks into discreet jobs that do not become overly onerous for any one individual/group of individuals. The club is looking for skills that could assist in database management, statistics, CricHQ scoring, IT support, managing the bar, social media support, gear management and general admin assistance. This could be a commitment as little as one hour or one day a season. Talk to any committee member about how you can help if you have any of the above skills to offer. 26
The Clubrooms and bar were not well patronised during the season, and improvement is needed. The bar is largely breakeven in the current year. We need to explore more inventive ways to attract teams back to the Club after their game on a Saturday. (Work in progress!!) The Club is extremely disappointed with the attitude of the Wellington City Council and their insistence that all signage, which has been in place for the last 10 years, now be removed from the clubrooms and the nets, as a condition of renewing our lease on the Park. This will have implications on our current sponsorship arrangements. This year marks the final year of the El Cheapo sponsorship as the main sponsor, and we thank Pat and Jane Baker for their generous sponsorship over the years. The Club’s financial results for the year were satisfactory overall, however prudent management will be necessary in these uncertain times. Big thankyous for huge contributions – • Many thanks also to Cath and Clinton Johns for stepping into the breach when necessary, to cover vital activities such as lunches, premier scoring and generally helping out wherever they could. • To Hells Pizza (Hataitai, Island Bay and Strathmore) for the sponsorship of lunches for the Prem home games • To Cath and Clinton Johns, Susan McDiarmid and John Wiggins, Jeremy Dean, Robyn and Gordon Dry, Cath Shields, Paul and Audrey Madigan and Jimad Khan – who all pitched in from time to time and demonstrated their culinary skills by turning on lunches for the Prem boys on a Saturday. Much appreciated by one and all!! • To Pat & Jane Baker for their wonderful sponsorship support. • to Rob Macdonald, our Webmaster/Statistician • to Cath Shields – the Club’s official Premier scorer and luncheon assistant - always prepared to step up. Well done Cath – the baking is delish and always well received!! • to all the captains and team organisers for fronting up and carrying the clubs banner throughout the season. Good one! 27
We look forward to the 2021-22 season with a little trepidation. The Covid19 fiasco continues to create a lot of uncertainty around what the season will look like. Revenue avenues will be affected, and we will have to be watchful and prudent in managing our financial resources in the coming year. I expect to see you all back on deck next season – and bring all your mates with you, so that they too can experience first- hand the phenomenon that is the Mighty Easts! Obituaries --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sadly, during the year, we had two club stalwarts pass away. Dan Kelly Life Member Dan Kelly passed away on 14 December 2020, aged 92 years. Dan was always a keen supporter of Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club and its predecessor club Midland St Pats and his presence at Kilbirnie Park will be sorely missed. Trevor Malloch (2 December 1928 – 2 November 2020) Former Kilbirnie Cricket Club opening bowler Trevor Malloch, quietly passed away early last month at a Feilding rest home. He was exactly one month short of his 92nd birthday, and at the time of his death was Wellington's oldest surviving first-class player. A fine medium-fast right-arm bowler who Don Neely described as ‘very accurate and attacked the stumps’, Trevor played 90 games for Kilbirnie, taking 370 wickets at 17.11. A modest tail ender, his top score was an unbeaten 36, while he made 625 runs at an average of 7.9. 28
From his childhood home in Wellington Road, Trevor attended Kilbirnie School, going on to Wellington Technical College between 1943 and 1946, with engineering as his main trade subject. There he played in the First XI alongside future New Zealand player Trevor McMahon. He joined Kilbirnie in 1948, and in the 1953/54 season helped the club to Cook Shield success with a competition-high 59 wickets at 12.71 each. He also took most wickets in 1957/58 with 51 at 13.03, while in 1954/55 he secured 43 wickets at 14.90. The following season he took 48 wickets at 15.31 and in 1956/57 40 wickets at 19.45. Trevor’s best bowling figures came in December 1957, when he took 8-39. Other impressive returns came in November 1954 with 8-54, and in October 1956 with 7-60. Despite his outstanding club performances Trevor played just twice for Wellington, against Central Districts and Otago in 1953/54, scoring 19 runs and capturing six wickets. Trevor moved to Palmerston North in 1958 and joined the Old Boys Cricket Club, which also had New Zealand players Ian Colquhoun and Bryan Yuile in its ranks. A keen and able golfer he became a Life Member of both the New Zealand Golf Association and the New Zealand Sports Turf Institute. After being an engineer and later a company manager, Trevor became active in community affairs and chaired both the Central Power Electricity Trust and the Palmerston North Hospital Board. He was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal in the 2004 Queen’s Birthday Honours for public services. He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Souter, along with their children Karen and Tony. 29

The Legendary Gordon Dry by Doug Pollock One word has been synonymous with Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club since its inception in 1993 when Midland St Pats and Kilbirnie amalgamated. ‘Gordie’ has been omniscient throughout the club in that time. The only constant in the last 27 years, Gordon Dry has stepped down as Club Manager due to current ill health. 21 senior teams and 36 junior teams now represent the mighty Easts! Gordie has built and managed the largest adult cricket club in New Zealand. Allied to that, Easts are the second largest Junior Club in the country. Gordie’s faultless administration, management and leadership is the primary reason we are the envy of all. There is not a role that Gordie has not performed at Easts. I state that advisedly, as he’s never sought title. Similar to the great Easts teams, he just gets the job done. 31
The financial viability of the club is much due to Gordie’s treasury skills. The club rooms are so well presented thanks to Gordie’s attention to detail. The bar prices we all enjoy courtesy of his commercial and economic acumen. As we all know, Gordon Dry is the hardest man on earth to say ‘No’ to… this is reflected in the team selections every Saturday. Cricket Wellington and Wellington City Council understand well Gordie’s capabilities. The will of the man ensures Easts are represented and our position protected. We have all shared in the glory of 16 Pearce Cup triumphs in the last 20 years. The pivot on which that success has been derived is Gordon Dry. He has an astute cricket brain. He cuts through nonsense to get to the core. He has always been a great selector. He can see what others can’t when selecting cricketers. Gradually, Gordie compiled a Premier team so well rounded their success was inevitable. In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s Gordie managed the Premier team along with his other club responsibilities. Players wanted for nothing. He catered for every eventuality. Any player that has been lucky enough to play in one of Gordie’s teams has been so grateful for his duty and service. Gordie will still be involved with the club as his health allows. It is advisable for all to pay their subs on time! You all know that phone call will be coming if not… But for now, I’m sure the entire club and wider cricket fraternity will join us in making a simple, heartfelt statement to Gordon Dry. “Thank you.” 32
Premier Men’s team Season Report 2020-21 by Ronnie Nathu --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After the disappointing end to last season due to COVID, resulting in the Prems being relegated to Hazlett Trophy, the team’s main objective was to win the Hazlett Trophy and get back to its rightful place in the Pearce Cup. In what could potentially have been a difficult season the Prems resoundingly won the Hazlett Trophy being clear at the top by 44 points and having remained unbeaten in the one day and two-day competition. The team’s dominance was underlined by beating the three teams below them by outright victories. The season started with an unbeaten run in the one dayers with two low scoring nail biting victories against University and North City, with the lower order coming to the rescue. Against University Ill Tugaga and the Wiggins Boys put on 64 runs for the last two wickets to get home. Against North City Kaleb Gilhooly, Jed Wiggins and Jacob Madigan (on debut) put on 93 runs for the last two wickets to get home. A good run in the T20 competition with good wins against Taita, Karori and Wellington Collegians saw the team progress to the semi-final against Hutt Districts, unfortunately the team came up short to the eventual winners. The team came to the fore in the two-day competition winning 4 of the 5 games with bonus point victories and enforcing the follow on in the other game without being able to force the win. The team was well led by Luke Georgeson and ably supported by Jimad Khan. There were many highlights throughout the season such as • Three hundred’s from Lauchie Johns, displaying some sublime ball striking and shot making during these innings. Lauchie ended the season with 615 runs at an average of 55.91. 33
• The highlight of the T20 competitions was a high-quality innings of 119 runs from Fraser Colson that saw some clean hitting with 8 x 4s and 9 x 6s against a quality Karori bowling attack. Fraser also scored 84 against Naenae (sacrificing a century to ensure a timely declaration), during this innings he shared a 204-run partnership nd in 28 overs with Patrick Howes (148), which is a Easts 3 wicket record partnership. Fraser’s experience on and off the field in the limited games played has been a significant factor in the team’s success. • Luke Georgeson one day century of 130 against Petone. Luke was the leading run scorer with an impressive 712 runs at an average of 44.50. Together with his bowling which continued to develop this season and returned 29 wickets at an average of 16.00. It was just reward for Luke for the hard work he has put into his cricket and the form shown that he was called up to the Firebirds in the later part of the season. He performed with distinction and has been rewarded with a contract for the 2021/22 season. • Adam Leonard was a great addition to the team and lead the bowling attack and tirelessly continued to charge in with the new ball ending with 40 wickets at 15.43, with 7-48 against Collegians on a reasonably flat wicket his best return. Adam also scored some important runs at key moments during the season. • Jimad Khan provided the team with the leadership and experience needed and batted for the team and scored runs at key moments. • Jed Wiggins continued to develop as a seasoned senior cricketer and was the team’s leading wicket taker with 44 wickets at an average of 14.52. Jed’s batting come on leaps and bounds and he played some crucial innings in the lower order and showed a great deal of maturity and calmness to see the team home on a number of occasions. He will be pushing for a greater level of responsibility and promotion up the order. 34
• Newcomer Patrick Howes, once he settled into the playing cricket in Wellington conditions showed his talents cumulating in his innings of 148 not out against Naenae and a key match winning innings against Petone of 42 not out. His left spinners returned 34 wickets at 16.62. He managed to keep fielders focussed with his ability to rip through his over in next to no time. With Pat’s departure to Wanaka, his presence will be missed. • Jacob Logan continued his development in the top order scoring 499 runs at 26.26. He consistently made good starts and will be looking to convert these to bigger scores next season in the Pearce Cup. • Xavier Aspell had a solid start in premier cricket and shows a lot of potential to be one of the mainstays in the team for years to come and the Prems look forward to his continued development. • Nate Wiggins also demonstrated he is capable of playing Prem cricket and will look to capitalise on this solid start next season. • Jacob Madigan had limited opportunities for the Prems but is a bowler with a lot of promise and will have plenty of more opportunities next season. • Ill Tugaga is a steadying influence in the team on and off the field and his 6-40 against Naenae and hitting the winning runs in a nail- biting finish against University in a one-day game were memorable highlights. • A welcome mid-season addition to the team, Josh Newport added some firepower to the bowling attack and was rewarded with 10 wickets at 11.6 in the limited games played. • Henry Wells made his senior debut and showed a tidy display behind the stumps in the limited games played and will look to build on this going forward. • Kaleb Gilhooly opportunities were also limited, however his innings of 41 against North City was a match winning knock. Taine Bayley’s opportunities were also limited before his departure back to Dunedin, but he made some useful contributions with bat and ball. 35
The Prems have the nucleus of a good side with youth and experience and look forward to the season ahead in the Pearce Cup, defending the Cook Shield and challenging for another title. The inability to field a consistent team hampered the side. Whilst there were 6 centuries scored during the season the team lacked consistency to score competitive totals throughout the season. The club will need to focus on ensuring the Reserves are a competitive side and challenges for the top half of the table and provides a pathway for players to play Prems cricket, as it is a competitive level of cricket. It will be critical for the Premier Reserves cement their place in this grade next season. 37
Some of the highlights – • Dilakshan Dila posted three centuries in a break-out season and was rewarded with a senior debut in the last game of the season. Unfortunately, due to the one-sided game he did not get the opportunity to showcase his talent. Dilakshan scored 582 runs at an average of 44.77. He will be challenging for a senior spot next season. • Centuries where also scored by Matt Rowe (137), Xavier Aspell (159*) and Haseeb Quazi (104*). Strong batting efforts came from Matt Rowe, Jared Simpson, Avinash Shastri and Nate Wiggins. • Guri Tiwana for the second year running was the leading wicket taker with 21 scalps with his left arm orthodox and was generally economical throughout the season. There were other very handy wicket taking contributions from Haseeb Quazi, Jared Simpson, Matt Rowe. • It was disappointing to lose all-rounder Avinash Shastri mid- season, he left a hole in the side as he was making a valuable contribution up to that stage with bat and ball. • Some college lads on the horizon, played a few games in the 2nds and 3rds and looked pretty useful – namely Joel Kajendraseelan, Harry Lancaster and Marco Muollo. They’ll definitely give things a boost in the seasons ahead. Premier 4 (Cougars) team season report 2020-21 by Ronnie Nathu The Cougars finished a very creditable third in the grade (Div 5) winning 5 one day games out of 7 and also winning 2 2-day games. This is a great effort considering the side typically lack stability of personnel throughout the season. The side was led by Oli Frederickson who scored two centuries he was supported by Nishad Bhatt and Roshan Rai in the batting. A feature of the bowling was a 6-wicket bag by Andrew Peden. First Grade Roosters (Div 5) season report 2020/21 by The 12th Man ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Those who have perused previous accounts of the Roosters' season exploits will be familiar with the classic lament that they are notoriously poor starters. The good news is the abysmal Wellington weather washed out the first two games, so the lads only had to endure an 0 and 3 opening. You'd have struggled to see more balls dropping in the nation's entire Year 9 cohort. And the top 7 might as well have walked out to bat with a 5 iron. At least a couple of the bowlers had some reasons to smile, with Jimmy Bignall and Marnus McDonald snaring some early poles. The single moment's joy pre-Christmas came when Shaddy cut Jville up, Sags took the greatest gully catch ever seen and the batsmen threw caution to the wind with Stud Mullet Bron pumping his guns before the Pancha and Squid Magan broke the fitty mark. As they say, the season only really starts in January. At this point it must be noted the Roosters remain unbeaten in 2021. Much of this form reversal can be attributed to some quality recruiting that saw ER Collins, Aussie Dom and Babyface Rixon join the squad. Not only could they all catch and field, but they had also had previous coaching (clearly not from Bassi) on how to knock the leather around. Stokes Valley and Hutt Districts got dispatched before the Belv emerged from hibernation to notch a ton in the opening 2-dayer, ably supported by the talisman Doc, on family day at KP3. It ended up a draw, but not before some life emerged in the final hour as the Roosters discovered they did have hands, only running out of time to polish off the Collegians tail. 42
You could write books about the next two games. The first would be titled Peaches: Tales of a Giant Bell-End, in honour of Richard Petrie refusing to walk after smashing the cover off one that would've been pouched (50/50) at first slip but for Dom moving sharply to swallow it with the gloves. The incident gained such notoriety it featured on an episode of the Grade Cricketer Podcast (true story). Good ol Peaches then blocked out 20 overs to lose the first innings rather than risk his wicket. It's possible he was put in a bad mood by the legendary Magic Legs' monstrous six followed by the blasting of his theme song with a sing-along from the boundary. Cougars strutted up next full of confidence they could end the Roosters streak. They couldn't, technically. The Roosters looked set for a first innings lead when Dom notched his maiden ton, only for the inevitable collapse thanks to nemesis Peden ripping the sacks out of the bottom order. Then Ollie settled in for his own bar tab, before deciding to set the modest target of 270 off 30 overs. Next thing you know, the Roosters are 229/1 with 3 overs to go and both Ollie and Peden are squatting bricks. Unfortunately, Belv got castled off his pads for a belligerent 130 and when Squid fell for 60 it was all over. The Roosters finished up by ruthlessly spanking Stokes Valley by an innings. Special mentions to team Grabone, who added banter to the cause, old dog Winter who scored more runs on one leg than he's achieved with two in a loooooooong time, and the Skip who might've shown up a couple of times after managing to manufacture a 10-year gap between offspring. Another season dusted. Bring on the next season. 43

(Division 7) Bulldogs team season report 2020-21 by Ronnie Nathu th The Bulldogs finished 7 in the grade. They registered a one day win and a 2-day win doing the double over the Wellington Collegians Axeman. Karl Grove once again led the batting with 556 runs at an average of 46.33. He was well supported by Dimitri Goumas, David Corry, George Scandlyn, Ben Hill and Jacob Warren. Jacob Warren scored a century on the last day of the season during a run chase where the Bulldogs run out of time and fell 17 runs short after being set 357 in the fourth innings. Karl picked up Gaudin Cup for best batsman at the club awards. The bowling was primarily led by Dimitri Goumas with 32 wickets at 17.72. Dimitri picked up the club award of the Cameron Cup for M V P. th A notable highlight of the season was the celebration of Carl Gill’s 80 birthday with a game organised of past and current players ( with television coverage), a great celebration at the clubrooms and a team dinner. I wish to thank the Bulldogs team and Johnny Blonde for doing a lot of the organisation for this.
