editorial W e’re all probably still snapping after last week’s Krakatoa- blowing shenanigans in Tallaght which basically robbed us of a point or three. Suffice to say I can go on and on about what was a blatant injustice but I won’t dedicate an entire editorial to giving out about our great rivals as Rovers did about us some years ago. Our performance last week was one of the best in a while, we were treated to some beautiful football and some fine individual performances; one of our columnists described the tireless sprinting of Ross Tierney Premier Division as being ‘like Iniesta crossed with Jack Russell’ and in fairness that was an 1923/24, 1927/28, accurate description. It was great to see him get on the scoresheet too and 1929/30, 1933/34, hopefully he’ll continue as a goal-scoring midfielder. 1935/36, 1974/75, News that an extra €500,000 is being thrown into the Dalymount 1977/78, 2000/01, redevelopment pot courtesy of a UEFA Euro 2020 legacy project is 2002/03, 2008, 2009 certainly welcome. With Ireland surrendering our four-match hosting duties and for obvious reasons, it is quite comforting to know that the FAI Cup long-awaited project seems to be well on the way now. With the Shed roof 1927/28, 1934/35, set to be dismantled and scrapped this year, purely for safety reasons, it will 1969/70, 1975/76, be sad to see the Dalymount we know and love surrender what’s left of its 1991/1992, 2000/01, character and the wheels of change roll with greater intensity. The ultimate 2008 completion of the project will of course be very welcome and much needed, but, well, Dalymount is Dalymount, if you get me... League Cup Finally I’d like to weclome Bohemian FC Honorary Secretary Stephen 1974/75, 1978/79, 2009 Lambert to the programme team. with Keith Long T from the dugout onight we welcome Ruaidhri Higgins, his backroom staff and his Derry City team to Dalymount Park. Ruaidhri got his reign as Derry boss off to the best possible start with an away win at Sligo on Saturday and his team will come to Dalymount with great confidence and belief. Re ecting on last week there is no doubt in my view that our performances deserved more with some good football in both games against the two Rovers and unfortunately a combination of some bad defending, poor finishing and some dreadful officiating cost us. We need to be more clinical in both boxes, cutting out some basic errors defensively and taking our chances when they come our way. We have been guilty of missing some really guilt edge chances in the last two games and we must take those opportunities and become ruthless in front of goal. We will stick to our principles and we will not allow set-backs to set us back. We have a firm belief in what we are doing and we will do what we have always done by trying to move forward and to become better. Unfortunately a great game in Tallaght last Friday and a great advertisement for the league the case and we were punished on the double. was spoiled by a refereeing decision that saw On balance decisions tend to even us ultimately lose the game and also James themselves out over a season and maybe our Finnerty to a red card. We as a club must fight good fortune is yet to come. It is important this and although the mechanism for an appeal however to demand an improvement from our against a red card is only applicable in the officials. They are a very important stakeholder case of mistaken identity, we feel that the card in our game and there are some really good awarded to James is unjust and needs to be guys doing a difficult job but we must not be overturned. held to ransom by them. Friday’s decision was equally as frustrating Officials in my opinion need to be more as the foul on Danny Grant in last year’s game accountable for their actions and the process in Tallaght which again we felt was a stonewall to which they are made accountable needs to penalty decision which went against us. I be more transparent. I know I am at risk of do not have selective memory so in terms ridicule but I cannot help but feel that if we are of balance it is important to note we have to improve all aspects of the professional game benefited from some decisions in previous in this country that all parties including officials derby games, most notably when Lee Grace need to raise the bar. was sent off for a handball when the ball hit his face. My argument to that is that it only Enjoy the game became clear upon watching the replay back several times to realise the ball actually hit Lee on the face and not in fact the hand and it was almost impossible for the referee in real time to think otherwise. Friday’s decision was not like for like and the referee gets it wrong in my opinion and he obviously feels that James action was serious foul play to deny a Keith Long, Manager goalscoring opportunity. with Stephen Lambert A from the club very good evening to all Bohemian members, season ticket holders, fans and volunteers, as well as to our visitors tonight Derry City. As this is our first opportunity since Chris Brien’s departure, all here at Bohemians would like to put on record our gratitude for all his many years great work on behalf of the club. As many of you will be aware, Chris has held three positions on the board over the last decade or so, Financial Director and President twice. In each of these stints, he has carefully and determinedly steered Bohemians from a very serious crisis to what we have today, all the while contributing significantly to community work on behalf of the club through the Bohemian Foundation. For all that service, he deserves a huge thank you from us all. Turning our attention to on field matters, the taste of Fridays defeat in Tallaght is still a be back playing games in the near future and very bitter pill to swallow. with Ned Simpson I first visited the Brandywell in 0. When our bus arrived at the border, we were stopped at a British army checkpoint where our grumpy driver was qui ed as to where we were going whilst a couple of teenage tommies carrying scary looking weapons searched our coach. Needless to say, this inspection incurred vengeful wrath from the traveling ypsies and there was much ’effin n’ ’jeffin at the perceived violation. Whatever happened to... #4 St. James’s Gate O Picture n the back of a stack trophies won as an amateur club, St. James’s Gate were one of the heavyweights and founding members of the League of Ireland in 1921/22. Framing Founded in 1902 as a factory team of the St. James’s Gate Brewery, they were one of the strongest clubs Specialist in the Leinster Senior League, where the seven other founding clubs played previously. The Gate as they became known continued their remarkable winning streak by claiming the first League and FAI Cup trophies, to add to their haul of the Leinster Senior Cup of that season also. However that was it, trophy wise, until they added another FAI Cup in and a league title in 0. Finishing bottom eighth in after one win all season, they were not re- elected to the League. It had been suggested that the reason for this was because the club announced its intention to revert to amateur status. However, when the vote was being taken, the representative for Shamrock Rovers stated, “the St. James’s Gate club has not full control over their own finances, as any profit made during the season goes to the Guinness Athletic Union and is therefore lost to football.” The other clubs were also known to be unhappy that members of the uinness Athletic Union did not have to pay into home matches, depriving those clubs of their share of gate receipts. They were to return however, to the First Division in 1990, replacing Newcastlewest. Although they finished a respectable fifth in their first season back, which would to be the highest position they would achieve , their impact wasn’t as successful as their first tenure and didn’t last as long We frame everything either.
