TUESDAY LECTURE SERIES CELEBRATION LIFELONG AT A GLANCE COURSES LISTED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER BY COURSE TITLE 1950s: Communism, Conformity & Civil Rights If the parents of Baby Boomers were part of the “Greatest Generation,” what are the Boomers? Chopped liver? Join us in a conversation about the 1950s. Bob will bring some facts you may be unaware of about this period. You bring some recollections. Beware: not everything during this period is as happy as Lucy or The Beaver would have had you believe. The course is open to those born before 1947 and after 1963 as well as those born during those years. (It was a 15-year-long decade, okay?) You will not be required to duck and cover under the desks. Instructor: Bob Pearson Bob taught at the University of Pennsylvania for ten years, being voted best teacher by the Fels Institute of Government's graduating class of 2011. He is currently attending a course on world religions at Valencia College and has been engaged in independent study of religions for the past three years. It’s a journey that many people make every year and the law and criteria continue to change. But this course is NOT just for those of Italian descent. We will explore the resources beyond Ancestry.com. We will learn how to order records, how to search the National Archives and order certified records, and how to access the US Citizenship and Immigration Services records. He also holds a graduate certificate of Financial Planning from University of Miami. In addition, he has earned the Certified Financial Planner (CPA) and Chartered Financial Consultant designations from the American College and is a Chartered Life Underwriter. He attended classes in Paris for his Doctor of Business Administration and holds a Diplôme approfondi de langue française from the University of Paris I, Sorbonne. 3 Classes — February 10, 17, 24 Wednesday 12:00 — 1:15PM American Icons: John D. Rockefeller, Frances Langford and Salvador Dali These three people have led very different lives; John D. Rockefeller, as the founder & president of Standard Oil, became America's 1st billionaire over 100 years ago. Was he a tyrant or generous philanthropist? Everyone was "In the Mood for Love" when Frances Langford, renowned Big Band singer, rose to fame from radio to the movies during Hollywood's Golden Era. She was also the Armed Forces Sweetheart, performing for the troops in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Salvador Dali produced more than 1,500 paintings as well as sculpture, jewelry, lithographs, set designs, etchings, and objects d'art. They each have something to do with Florida: Rockefeller's winter home is in Ormond Beach and open to the public, Frances and her husband built the Frances Langford Outrigger Resort (the restaurant is famous for its shrimp dishes, along with a picture gallery of her), and there is a unique museum in Clearwater that houses an extensive collection of Dali's works. Come learn some more about these three American Icons! Instructor: Audrey Byllott After working for Citibank for 20 years, Audrey became a Director for MasterCard USA for six years, then joined MasterCard Europe as a consultant for five more years. Her banking career may have nothing to do with American Icons but her love of history and interesting people does! As a Lifelong instructor, Audrey has lectured on 18 American Icons. All of them have museums and/or homes right here in Florida and are worth a visit. 3 Classes — April 14, 21, 28 Wednesday 12:00 — 1:15PM An Elite Sorority: America's Iconic First Ladies “The power behind the throne IS the power.” Join us as we discuss several of America’s iconic First Ladies. How did their lives before living in the White House impact the contributions they made while Page 10 of 35 Celebration Lifelong • Website: CelebrationLifelong.org • E-mail: Lifelong@CelebrationFoundation.org • Phone: 407-595-5905
Spring 2021 • Three-week sessions begin February 9, March 9, & April 13 • Celebration Lifelong on Zoom! there? What were their lasting legacies? The position of First Lady is a fascinating aspect of American culture. Together, let’s learn more about the influences of some of the remarkable women who have served in this role – a role that has no job description. Instructor: Mark Hayes Mark has been a student of the presidency for 50 years. He spent thirty of those years living in and around Washington, D.C. Always fascinated with the history of Washington, DC and especially The White House and its inhabitants, he brings an in-depth knowledge and passion for the subject. In his two previous courses, The White House and most recently, The American Presidency, he shared his knowledge and keen interest on the two subjects. Mark, a “junior historian,” majored in American Studies in college and continues to study American history today. 3 Classes — April 15, 22, 29 Thursday 1:30 — 2:45PM Ancient Greek Influences on the Contemporary Church's Views on Women Plato and Patriarchalism. This course will survey Plato's writings about the nature and role of women in ancient Greek society, and then trace how those patriarchal views have persisted even until the present day in the Christian Church. We all inherit ideas and thoughts from the culture that surrounds us and the generations that preceded us. Ideas can be amazingly persistent! It is interesting to trace the history of certain ideas, such as the role of women in society and the church, and then pause to consider whether or not the origins of those ideas justify their ongoing acceptance. We will discuss reasons to conclude that Plato's world view does not warrant such continued influence on this topic. This will be a fun look at history and at our current ideas too! Instructor: Susan Bubbers Susan is the founding Dean of the ATLAS Theological Center. Her background includes a BS in Computer Science, a Masters of Divinity, a Doctor of Ministry in Spiritual Formation, and PhD from the London School of Theology. She was ordained an Anglican priest in 1995, served in parish and campus settings, and taught in undergraduate and graduate level programs. She is an author, conference speaker, and pastor of the local Celebration Anglican Fellowship. She teaches courses leading to a Certificate in Christian Studies. 3 Classes — March 10, 17, 24 Wednesday 1:30 — 2:45PM Page 11 of 35 Celebration Lifelong • Website: CelebrationLifelong.org • E-mail: Lifelong@CelebrationFoundation.org • Phone: 407-595-5905
