MALTHOUSE THEATRE FRIENDS:
IN 2019 WE’RE BRINGING
YOU FRESH THEATRE THAT
WILL BE JOYOUS, TERRIFYING,
HILARIOUS, AND LEAVE
YOU AWESTRUCK.
This season explores ghost stories, where history
permeates the present and spirits surround us
constantly. Whether it is the haunted house at number
one Cloud Street, the ‘mad’ female mystics, or lovers
and families returning from the past; these ghosts
are our collective consciousness reminding us of
the dangers of forgetting.
Exquisite terror will be found in the vastness of outer
space in the world premiere of the science fiction cult
classic Solaris, and in the claustrophobia and isolation of
the Australian thriller Wake in Fright. Together we’ll share
the cathartic rush of screaming out loud in the dark.
Season 2019 is also filled with hilarity as we introduce
you to a personality-altering cult in The Temple,
a lacerating comedy about US race relations in
Underground Railroad Game and a side-splitting send-
up of Melbourne’s class divisions as the lines between
bogans and chardonnay sippers blur in Australian
Realness. We’re also thrilled to return our smash-hit
Indigenous revenge comedy Blackie Blackie Brown.
She’s BAAACK!
Our season is proudly bookended by performances
from two of Australia’s most extraordinary divas:
Ursula Yovich, who will electrify our Merlyn Theatre
stage in Barbara and the Camp Dogs, and just in time
for Christmas, Malthouse Theatre’s beloved cabaret
star Meow Meow will whip us into a frenzy as we end
the year with a purr.
Thanks to your support, Season 2018 was a huge
success. Join us again for another scream-filled
ride in Season 2019.

WE’RE FOR
ARTISTS
THE BESEN FAMILY ARTIST PROGRAM
For 14 years, the Besen Family Foundation has supported
professional development for early to mid-career individuals
through an acclaimed Artist Program. The program cultivates
the next generation of ambitious theatre-makers by allowing
them to gain experience and ongoing artistic work within
a mainstage theatre company.

THE FEMALE DIRECTOR IN RESIDENCE
Generously supported by Craig Reeves, Malthouse
Theatre’s Director in Residence program provides
intensive career development and a salary to a female
theatre director. In 2019, Ming-Zhu Hii—our ninth
Director in Residence—will continue her residency
with Malthouse Theatre.

MALCOLM ROBERTSON WRITERS PROGRAM
The Malcolm Robertson Foundation supports the
development and presentation of original Australian works
by way of a Writers Program. Since 2004, the program
has commissioned two emerging artists per year to write
a new Australian work for Malthouse Theatre.

LIVING NOW
In 2019, Malthouse Theatre and Footscray Community Arts
Centre continue their partnership through the LIVING NOW
program. This project has been assisted by the Australian
Government through the Australia Council for the Arts,
its arts funding and advisory body, and the Malcolm
Robertson Foundation. This program supports visionary
storytellers to bring contemporary stories to the stage.
Now in its second year, the program provides a residency
and development opportunity for two writers from culturally
diverse backgrounds with an interest in theatre.

YOUR
     JOURNEY
       WITH
    MALTHOUSE
     THEATRE
      AWAITS.
At Malthouse Theatre we collaborate with local and
international artists to create inventive performances
that cut to the core of the human experience. Theatre
has the power to interrogate, disrupt and to be an agent
of change—and we think it always should. At Malthouse
Theatre, the work we produce explores the world
personally, socially and politically. Based in a dedicated
venue, The Coopers Malthouse in Melbourne, we are a
home for live experiences that entertain and provoke
a dialogue with and within audiences. Welcome to
Malthouse Theatre. Join us in 2019 for an epic
journey through an awe-inspiring year of theatre.
