Our discussions will focus on three major religions – Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam. These religions are called the Religions of the
Book, since the books of Scripture are fundamental to their faith.
These religions are part of our daily global and local news. Many of our
family, friends, and neighbors belong to one of these three religions.
Does understanding of these religions help us understand today’s

        American Political System IR-885
“Factionalism is a spirit not to be encouraged...” George Washington,
1796 Farewell Address. Despite Washington's misgivings,
        factionalism–political parties–has been a cornerstone of American
political life since before the Revolution. This course will trace the
evolution of the American two-party system from the Patriots and
Loyalists to today's Democrats and Republicans while also studying
such long-vanished parties as the Federalists; the Whigs and the
original Socialists. The course will also examine the impact of short-
term parties such as the Free Solders; Constitutional Unionists, Bull
Moose Progressives and Dixiecrats. What impact did third-party
candidates---TR; Wallace; Perot, Debs---have on the contemporary
national debate? And will the two-party system survive...or will it
splinter into a three-party system: Socialists; Centrists and
        Conservatives?

Parlez-vous francais? Un peu? Assez bien?

information from reading French newspapers. We read about events
and issues in the United States, in France and in other parts of the
world that give us concern. We get information about how the French
        news media view the U.S.

encouraged to use French to ask questions, to add their information, to
express their thoughts and opinions, to learn to understand and
        participate in discussions in French.

The classroom ambiance in informal, relaxed, friendly and supportive. Most
of the class members are “repeaters.” They came once and then stuck with
it. They represent varying professions and specialties. They enjoy each
other and a lively “esprit de corps.” The instructor enjoys it too.

        Financial Planning in Retirement IR-860
Retirement is often looked as a ‘finish line.’ In reality, it is a new phase
in your financial life which can span as long as your working years.
Retirement typically presents more questions than answers. What will
be my medical expenses? Who will make decisions on my behalf if I
have diminished financial capacity? What are my insurance needs?
Most important, will I outlive my retirement assets? This course
analyzes many aspects of financial planning including, investment
management, insurance planning, tax planning, and estate planning.
The objective of this course is to help retirees navigate through the
uncertainty of retirement and plan accordingly.

Leonardo da Vinci: the Artist as Genius IR-456
The commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo
da Vinci in 2019, marked by a blockbuster exhibition at the Louvre in
Paris, is an ideal opportunity to re-examine the artist’s legacy. In many
ways, he is the most fitting example of the Universal Man – the
Renaissance artist who was skilled in wide-ranging disciplines such as
painting, sculpture and architecture, as well as scientific fields like
engineering, anatomy, botany and geology. Yet it was precisely the
nature of his genius that seems to have prevented Leonardo from
completing many of the projects he imagined. This course will
examine Leonardo’s career from his early training in Florence to his
death in France, and will consider some of the challenging aspects of
his oeuvre, from incomplete works to problematic attributions.

complex and how it has further
evolved into the privatization of soldiers
and turn them into a commodity. The
first week will be about Erik Prince with
his creation of Blackwater and the other
companies he has developed around the
world, while the second week will focus on others who operate private
security and mercenary firms in other parts of the world and what it all
means when it comes to the financial incentives of geopolitics,
warfare, and instability around the world.

Asked to describe baseball in a single word, pitcher Joaquin Andujar
gave a great answer: “youneverknow.” something odd, ironic, iconic, or
unusual happens every day, in one or many games, and even the most
rabid fan has trouble keeping up. This tongue-in-cheek course is
designed for both avid and casual fans, people who want to win trivia
contests and people who just want to laugh, have fun, and learn
something about America's one and only national pastime. Instructor
Dan Schlossberg is not only the author of 38 baseball books but also a
national baseball writer for and a confidant of many people
connected to major league baseball. In this class, students will learn
what is odd about the timing of Hank Aaron's home run record, what
Gaylord Perry had to do with the lunar landing, and why two major-
league pitchers traded families. The course includes a baseball power

               ** Churchill: Britain’s Incomparable Leader IR-876
Winston Churchill’s life was a roller coaster of bitter failures and
glorious achievements, of which recent film biographies only scratch
the surface. This 2-week class tells the full story, including Churchill’s
youthful meteoric rise to the corridors of British political power, and his
ensuing setbacks in World War I and dubious party-switching that left
him, at middle age, a near-forgotten back-bencher. Only his prescient
diagnosis of Hitler’s threat propelled his resurgence, setting the stage
for his unparalleled leadership of Britain during World War II and
beyond. Also, Churchill’s support of Jewish causes, while far from
perfect, stood out compared with those of his British contemporaries.
Still, Churchill’s clinging to a dying British imperialism and stubborn
indifference to wartime India’s mass famine hastened the demise of
British rule. Throughout, we will listen to and watch Churchill’s
speeches, including the timeless addresses by which he steeled Britons
to resist the Nazis and warned the West of the Soviet Iron Curtain, and
defined the preeminent value of defending freedom in its hour of
        maximum danger.
