AUTUMN 2019 THE PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME Autumn is always an exciting time of year, with a fresh intake of talented students finding their feet in their new home. We kick off this term’s schedule with a series of Open Days to welcome prospective students and give them a flavour of Academy life, and we conclude on 1 December with the final concert of 2019 in our ‘Bach the European’ series. Reflecting the extraordinary variety on offer, the Academy Big Band treats us to a concert featuring celebrated bassist and composer Laurence Cottle, and also performs with Tim Garland as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. Royal Academy Opera takes on Mozart’s delightful Die Zauberflöte, and our Musical Theatre students’ first term of hard work culminates in their show in the Susie Sainsbury Theatre. Students work with some of the best performers and conductors in the business, including Lorenza Borrani, who will direct the Academy Chamber Orchestra. The Academy Symphony Orchestra’s programme features Bartók, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev conducted by Edward Gardner; Stravinsky and Elgar with Robert Trevino; and a Berlioz extravaganza with Sir Mark Elder. Among those giving masterclasses are Simon Keenlyside, James Ehnes, Pascal Devoyon, Stephen Hough and Lucy Crowe, and for three days in November our new Oliver Knussen Chair of Composition, Hans Abrahamsen, will be in residence. Joanna MacGregor, Head of Piano, presents the second Autumn Piano Festival, this year entitled ‘Politics and Protest’, and the Academy Museum holds several half-term Children’s Events as part of its temporary exhibition, ‘What a Song and Dance’, which traces the development of musical theatre. We round off the term with the ever-popular annual Carol Service, which never fails to get us into the festive spirit! I look forward to welcoming you to the Academy over the coming months. Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood CBE 3
