Academic Program The academic program at Brisbane Boys’ College Junior School, which is based on the Australian Curriculum, acknowledges the different ways that boys learn, and teaches them how thinking assists them in their learning. We ask them, “What thinking is needed to tackle this challenge?” Classroom teachers create programs that inspire our boys to explore their passions, while building knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that help them to become successful, confident life-long learners. Classroom teachers are responsible for the delivery of: • English • Mathematics • Science • The Humanities and Social Sciences (History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship and Economics and Business) Specialist staff deliver lessons in: • Art • Christian Education • LOTE (Languages Other Than English) (Years 5 and 6) • Music • Physical Education • SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) Our teachers and educational specialists work together closely to provide programs that cater to the individual needs of identified students. Our aim is for students to discover who they are, how they learn, and explore their passions and purpose in life. Our team is always willing to clarify and discuss any issues Homework is an important part of learning to become an independent, life-long learner. Its is to help students reflect on and practise skills they have learnt at school, and to prepare for participation in class lessons. It is expected that students will complete their homework to the best of their ability. The Deputy Head of Junior School (Teaching and Learning), in consultation with the Head of Junior School, Head of Early Years and teaching staff, is responsible for the development and implementation of the curriculum, and is always willing to clarify and discuss any curriculum issues. After School Care – Club BBC Starting in January 2018 BBC will introduce an exciting new Club to care for and entertain your sons after school each weekday during term time. When: weekdays during term time, 3.00pm – 6.00pm Page | 1
Venue: based in a Junior School classroom, Club BBC will access The Green, The Undercroft, the Junior School Library, the Junior School Technology Lab and the Junior School Music Room. Fee: attendance at Club BBC is free of charge to BBC parents. How do I book? Simply email or phone the Junior School office to secure your son’s place at Club BBC. Purpose: • To provide meaningful, engaging and age-appropriate activities for Junior School boys, from Prep to Year 6; • To give opportunity for boys to complete their set homework in a calm and supportive environment; • To provide a suitable blend of outdoor and indoor activities, and active and passive recreation; • To allow flexibility for boys to arrive at Club BBC after first attending other activities, such as the Athletics Development Program, sports training or Art Club; and • To provide BBC parents with safe care for their sons between 3.00pm and 6.00pm on weekdays, during term time. Please note: No vacation care will be provided by BBC, but the College can refer families to various vacation care options. Arrival at School If a student arrives late to school, he is required to report to the Junior School Office, where his Junior School Record Book is stamped with a “Late Stamp” unless prior notice has been given. Whenever a student needs to leave the Junior School during the day for an appointment, as requested by his parents, he must be signed-out and collected from the Junior School Office. Note: any deviation to attendance (e.g. late to school, or early to leave) needs to be recorded on the (electronic) class roll. Students who arrive at school prior to 8.00am must sit with their school bags(s) in the Junior School Undercroft. They will be given permission to leave this area when the teacher commences duty. Art Our Art Department offers a very stimulating and creative program, which is sequential in its development from Prep to Year 6. Art Club For six weeks during Terms 1, 2 and 4, Art Club is run on Tuesday afternoons from 3.00pm to 4.00pm for Years 4 to 6 boys. opportunity for the BBC community, parents and prospective parents to view the full spectrum of student work across the Visual Arts program. Assessment and Reporting Boys will be assessed continuously in both formal and informal contexts, based on observations, work samples, self-evaluation, checklists, student interviews and, where applicable, specific testing. Reporting to parents is delivered by: • Parent/teacher interviews Term 1 • Written reports for both Semesters 1 and 2 • Work folios Athletic Preparation ‘Adventure’ … Prep to Year 3 “We know you as the knight, crusader, viking, gladiator or pirate you are.” We want our Prep-Year 3 boys to have enormous fun while developing their athleticism, so we have prepared programs specifically for the purpose of utilising ‘play’ without being restricted by rules and regulations of specific games or known sports. We regard three main areas as fundamental in guiding what we do: locomotion, manipulation and stabilisation. The boys engage in activities covering the full range of running, skipping, hopping, catching, throwing, grasping, balancing, rotation and bracing. The Prep to Year 3 ‘Adventure’ program supports the World Health Organisation recommendation of 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous exercise. Participants are asked to wear complete HPE uniform. Date: Commences Week 1 of each term Time: • Morning sessions Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 7.30am to 8.00am • Afternoon sessions Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 3.15pm to 4.15pm Venue: Junior School Green ‘Determination’ … Year 4 “We encourage you to discover what you’re good at.” As our boys move into Year 4, we maintain the ‘Adventure’ theme, but introduce the specific rules, regulations and playing structures for Basketball, Cricket, Football, Rugby, and Track and Field events, including Cross Country. At this level, we do not engage in formal competitions. Rather, the boys are empowered to learn a range of specific sport skills, in preparation for their involvement in the GPS sports competition from Year 5 onwards. In Year 4, we focus explicitly on boys operating in a team environment – with all the excitement, trepidation and complexities that derive from that experience. We know that positive contributions to ‘team’ forge strength of character, develop communication skills and provide a vehicle for our boys to meet the World Health Organisation’s recommended 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous activity. Date Commences Week 1 each term Time Morning sessions: Wednesday Thursday and Friday 7.30am to 8.00am Sports Skills: Afternoon: Monday and Tuesday 3.15pm to 4.15pm Term 1 Cricket Page | 3

This is to ensure a successful transition into the competitive environment with a long term view, discovery of athletic potential and meeting the World Health Organisation recommendation of 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous exercise. Transitioning from the ‘Athletic Preparation’ program from Prep to Year 4 into the ‘Athletic Development’ program of Years 5 and 6, our boys are fundamentally ready to learn and master general sport skills and will be encouraged to participate in a wide variety of physical activities. With fun and participation as our main focus, the Years 5 and 6 programs emphasise the ABCs (agility, balance and coordination) of physical development through daily play. This phase of the overall athletic development program begins to integrate physical, mental, cognitive and emotional development components within a well-structured program, with a key focus on physical literacy. Pre-season sessions: Various times dependent upon the sport Venue: Meet at the Junior School Green. Sessions will take place utilising different facilities, including ovals, Gymnastics Centre and playgrounds Date: Commence Week 1 of each Term Year 5 times: Monday morning 6:30am to 8:00am Thursday afternoon 3:15pm to 4:15pm Year 6 times: Tuesday afternoon 3:15pm to 4:15pm Thursday morning 6:30am to 8:00am For all enquiries please contact Director of Athletic Development Mr Mark Pavone mpavone@bbc.qld.edu.au or +61 437 479 708 or Mr Carl Fritz cfritz@bbc.qld.edu.au or +61 481 164 960 Basketball Basketball is an integral component of the sports program at BBC and is included in HPE lessons, Interhouse Competitions, GPS and also as Club Basketball. Every item of clothing and equipment should be clearly named, including camping gear, sporting equipment – such as cricket gear, footballs and tennis racquets – all books and stationery. As the boys change often, underclothes should be included in the list of items to be named. Parents are urged to be vigilant in this matter. Mobile Phones The College understands that mobile phones are an excellent safety device for boys when travelling to and from school. However, these items are expensive and not necessary during the school day. Boys who have a mobile phone are required to hand them into the Junior School Office for safekeeping, on arrival at the Junior School, and then collect them at the end of the day. Music The Brisbane Boys’ College Music Department provides all students with high quality music education and performance opportunities. Boys engage in music education in the classroom, instrumental and vocal teaching studios, and in performance ensembles. Page | 10
There are three strands of music at BBC: • Academic and Instrumental Classroom learning • Individual vocal and/or instrumental tuition • Regular rehearsals and performances By combining these strands, boys are able to achieve excellence in a program that employs innovative and interactive learning environments, to stimulate and produce independent and passionate musicians. BBC takes a holistic approach to music education. Classroom, individual tuition and performance experiences all contribute to making quality musicians who can either go on to a career in music, engage in music-making for recreation or just understand and enjoy the music they hear around them. Music at BBC is delivered in a way that is active. Boys sing, play, read, write, analyse and compose music. The College aims to create musicians who will love and appreciate music for the rest of their lives. Academic Music The Academic Music program includes Music Every Day, the Junior Instrumental program; Classroom Music from Prep to Year 8 and Elective Classroom Music from Years 9 to 12. It is linked to the Junior Instrumental program through common musical terminology and supports, and is strengthened by the Co-curricular Music program. Music Every Day program All Brisbane Boys’ College students from Prep to Year 3 receive specialist music classes every school day. The Music Every Day program aims to develop a love for music in every child. BBC is one of the few schools in Australia to offer daily music education. The program includes special workshops with a local girls’ school. Also, groups perform for the College community and friends. Junior School Classroom Instrumental program The Junior School Classroom Instrumental program is designed to allow boys to learn, participate in and enjoy music-making through practical performance with an orchestral instrument. Boys are tested to ensure they choose, or are allocated, an instrument most suited to them. Every Year 4 student learns violin, viola, cello or double bass and receives a weekly class lesson throughout the year. Year 4 students combine for various concerts throughout the year, performing as the Year 4 String Ensemble. Throughout Years 4, 5 and 6, boys receive one classroom music and one instrumental music lesson each week. Boys entering Years 5 and 6 are able to take up/continue with Strings or commence tuition on instruments from the brass, woodwind or percussion families. Students have one small group class each week for two years on the same instrument, as well as their classroom music lesson. These small groups combine to form the Year 5 Band or Strings, and the Year 6 Band or Strings. These ensembles perform for the Junior School at various times during the year. Individual Tuition Individual tuition is available through the College Music Department in all Orchestral and Band Instruments, Piano, Guitar, Vocal and Theory of Music and Musicianship Studies. The school also has an active Pipe Band. Students are prepared for AMEB, Trinity College and other exams if required. Page | 11

It is a requirement that boys learning an instrument will join a performance ensemble. Students audition for placement in ensembles, and are then invited to join choirs and ensembles as their skills develop. Auditions mainly take place at the end of each year but boys new to the college are able to audition in Term 1. Boys must be having regular lessons on their instrument to be eligible for audition and placement. Boys in choirs are strongly encouraged to take vocal lessons. Many performances are conducted within the College, as well as in the wider community. For example, College groups are a regular feature at many ANZAC Day services throughout the city, and our senior ensembles are afforded the opportunity to perform on the QPAC stage during Speech Page | 12
Night. These are but a few of the wonderful experiences that allow our musicians to engage in music-making at the highest level. • Junior Ensembles: Ensembles may vary year to year. String Department: Junior – Acton Strings, Junior Strings Brass, Woodwind, Percussion Department: Junior - Junior Band, Junior Percussion Ensemble Vocal Department: Junior – Colla Voce, Camerata BBC Pipe Band The Music Department Office is open from 8.00am to 4.00pm during term time. Parents and Friends’ Association Junior School Support Group (JSSG) Under the umbrella of the Parents & Friends’ Association, the Junior School Support Group operates as a unit whose main function is to support the work of the Junior School. Some fundraising is conducted, but more often it is providing help at Junior School functions and fostering the Junior School community. Class Representatives also offer their services to act as liaison persons for the Support Group, to rally the parents in a particular class for different events that happen during the year. Ideally, three parents per class are needed for these positions. If you would like to offer your services to be a Class Rep please contact the Junior School Support Group Secretary. An outline of the duties of a Class Rep is shown below. A JSSG Executive is elected each year, with the hope that its members will be willing to serve for a period of two years. The Annual General Meeting is held in Term 4 of each year. The Support Group compiles voluntary Class/Year information sheets for parents. These are used to enable families to contact each other when organising transport, social events, homework questions, etc. You are invited to complete this form on line, the link to which will be in the first Junior School News of 2018. For privacy reasons, unless this form is completed we cannot include your name on a Class/Year list. Page | 13
Junior School Support Group Contacts: President Mrs Annette Baird (Alexander Year 6 and Campbell Year 4) Treasurer Mrs Jeanne Shelburn (Nicholas Year 5) Secretary Mrs Jenny Cosgrove (Charlie and Samuel Year 6) Events Coordinator Mrs Katherine Pane (Benjamin Year 7 and Joshua Year 5) Class Representatives Each class requires at least one Class Representative, to serve for the year. This might sound like a daunting task but in fact it is not. It enables you to be in contact with parents from your class and other classes in the Junior School. The Class Representative is a class co-ordinator, working on behalf of the Junior School Support Group. Their job is to be a friendly face for their class, help parents with any queries and communicate about the activities of the Support Group. Class Representatives should attend the Junior School Support Group meetings, held once a term, 7.30pm in the Junior School Staffroom. If as a Class Representative you unable to make a particular meeting, please organise for someone to represent your class. These gatherings are very informative and keep you up to date with what is going on in the Junior School. All parents are welcome to attend – they are not exclusively for Class Reps – so please feel free to come along! Junior School Support Group activities include: • Prep to Year 6 Parents’ Information Evening/JSSG Welcome 2018 – January • Class Coffee Mornings/Picnics • Mothers’ Day Stall – May • Fathers’ Day Stall – August • Grandparents and Friends’ Day Years 4 to 6 – September • Welcome to Junior School 2019 Day November • Organising a class table at all JSSG fundraising/social events We would love parents to be involved in these! Many hands make light work! Parking, Drop Off and Pick Up The designated zones are outside the Junior School Building for Years 4 to 6, and outside Prep for Prep to Year 3. Brothers should go to the pick-up of the youngest. As there is no supervision by staff after 3.30pm, unless boys are at a co-curricular activity, they should go to Club BBC if not picked up by this time. Club BBC offers supervision and ensures that the boys are ready for parents when they arrive. Parking is only permitted in the College grounds if a BBC parking sticker is displayed on the windscreen of the car (staff only). Therefore, the best area for parents to park is on the edge of Oakman Park, alongside Union Street (opposite the Junior School). Pipe Band Bagpipe and Pipe Band Drums Mini Clinics Years 3 to 6 Terms 1- The sessions will involve the boys learning through a structured music book in a fun environment. Page | 14
Bagpipe Mini Clinic Boys learn on the practice chanter (like a recorder). This will cover breathing, finger placement technique and basic scales – and maybe even a ‘wee’ tune! Pipe Band Drums Mini Clinics Boys learn on the practice pad with their drum sticks. This will cover holding the sticks, basic technique and basic rudiments – and maybe even a ‘wee’ drum score! The aim of the clinics is to introduce boys to the Pipe Band, which has become synonymous with the College, and to provide an environment where they can simply ‘have a go’ at learning the bagpipes or the pipe band drums. The sessions will promote teamwork, social skills and discipline. For further information please email Mr Steven Stanley, Director of Pipe Band sstanley@bbc.qld.edu.au Robotics Club Robotics Club at Brisbane Boys’ College aims to: • Foster creativity in students • Develop problem solving skills • Create a rich learning environment for young scientists and engineers • Promote fine motor coordination in students • Promote teamwork This is achieved through Robotics. Robotics Club is offered from Years 4 to 12. Robotics Club is a competitive activity aimed at teaching the skills necessary for students to construct and program robots to compete in the RoboCup Junior Regional, State, National and International Championships. There are three challenges in the RoboCup: • Robot Dance, where the robot is choreographed to music • Robot Rescue, where a rescue robot has to follow a line around and over obstacles to locate and rescue victims of a chemical spill at an industrial plant • Robot Soccer, where teams of two robots play soccer on a field 2.4 metres x 1.2 metres chasing a ball that emits infra-red light The Year 4/5 program is an introduction to Robotics using Lego Mindstorms. The introduction is offered to new club members in Semester 1 or Semester 2 with a 10 week program followed by a display night. Groups are capped at 12 students. Year 5 students who have participated in Robotics in Year 4 will have an extension program for 10 weeks in Semester 1. Those students who demonstrate ability in Robotics may be offered a position in Semester 2 in a competitive group to prepare for RoboCup competition. The Year 6 program is the official start of competitive robotics, where the students will have a trial of 8 weeks to demonstrate ability to construct and program a robot for the RoboCup competition. After the 8 weeks a trial will be held and those teams that are competition ready will be invited to compete in the RoboCup Junior Queensland Championships in August. Others can try again the following year. There is a strict limit to the number of places offered each semester. Boys need to enrol in the co-curricular program through the College to be considered for a Page | 15
position in the groups. An email to obtain information about suitable training days and experience will be sent out to parents of boys who have registered an interest in trialling for Robotics. The group will be allocated as replies are obtained. Junior School students interested in being considered for a place in a group need to email Mr Noy before the second week of Term 1 to be allocated to a Semester 1 group. Any further information can be obtained by contacting Mr Colin Noy at cnoy@bbc.qld.edu.au Spiritual Life of the College Whilst the College readily enrols students of all religious backgrounds, as a church school the Christian ethos will be evident in the culture, teachings and life of Brisbane Boys’ College, as we seek to reflect the life of Christ in all that we do. The College Chaplain oversees a program of Christian Education both in the classroom and in regular worship assemblies. From these Christian foundations arise the College’s expectations that each student, guided by staff in both principle and example, aims to achieve at the best standard of which he is capable in all areas. It is recognised that each student will be at a different point in his faith journey. Students will be encouraged to be actively involved in the spiritual life of the College, and to grow personally as they are nurtured in spiritual matters. The nature of the religious education program and the form of Chapel worship are broadly Protestant and non-sectarian. The Spiritual curriculum of the College includes both aspects which are compulsory and voluntary. All students are involved in the following: • The worship component of each assembly, which includes a hymn, bible reading, short message and prayer. • Each term there will be a House or Year level Chapel service for students in the Middle and Senior Schools. Junior School students attend Chapel weekly. Boarders also attend Chapel weekly. • Students in Prep to Year 10 are involved in Christian Education classes. Students in Years 11 and 12 are involved in the Life and Belief Issues program. The Interschool Christian Fellowship (ISCF) Students in the Junior School will also have the opportunity to become a part of the Interschool Christian Fellowship under the leadership of the Associate Chaplain. Junior School ISCF (Inter School Christian Fellowship) is a voluntary meeting for students in Years 3 to 6, held each Friday at morning tea time. Meetings involve games and other activities, with a message based on the Gospel and a prayer often lead by students. ISCF is open to all students in Years 3 to 6, regardless of church background or affiliation. If you have any questions about the spiritual life of the College please do not hesitate to make contact with the Chaplain, Rev Graham Cole, or the Associate Chaplain, Mr Thomas McPherson. Page | 16
