The Chautauqua Genealogist VOL. 15, NO.2 MAY 1992 evidence that the Dunkirk Days signed onto this scheme or The Day Family Papers 1836-1952 whether any dispersement was ever made. My own fourth great-grandmother was Jane Lamb, questionably descended from General William Lamb, hero of the battle of Boyne, and thus rewarded by lands [and a castle yet] in Ireland. William was forced to flee for his life to the New World before he could take up residency on this rich estate, so there they lay, collecting rents into this multi-million dollar legacy. From the 1880’s to 1913 my great-uncles wrote dozens of letters in an attempt to prove a direct line from James, second son of William Lamb and to a Rev. Compoon in Philadelphia who collected much the same fees and assignments from the Lamb cousins that Mr. B. O. Corey did from the Drake cousins. Was this the popular family history flim-flam of a century ago? If my humble family of Western Pennsylvania fell victim to this and if the prominent Day family of Dunkirk was involved, how many other families have a history that includes the possibility from the Day Family papers at Reed Library of cashing in as an “heir” to a fortune in the Old Country? No one pictured l to r; P.H. Knight. Mable L. Gates, Edmund L. Day in my family evercoliccied a dime of William Lamb’s “estate,” but they apparently helped finance several first class trips to England and Ireland by the Rev. Compoon. Five boxes of records of the Day family of Dunkirk are well organized and indexed in the Special Collections at Reed Library. Do You Want a Noble Ancestor? This family was involved in many business enterprises, including a chemical factory in the same region of Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, In Vol. 18, No. 1(1992) National Genealogical Society where the Turners [see page 17] had their saw mill. Included in the Bowman Collection at McClurg Museum in Westfield, maintained by CCHS, are several reports addressed to the Chautauqua County Clerk from 1836 to 1847.
