The almost 200 year-old Tibbetts Point Lighthouse is a

WATCHING THE BIG SHIPS
Ship-watching is another attraction for visitors. On most
days one can see giant lakers and ocean-going vessels making
their way into or out of the Great Lakes. And between them
you’ll likely see Horne’s Ferry. Cape Vincent is an official port
of entry from early May to mid October. The only
auto/passenger ferry across the St. Lawrence River departs

1615 Samuel de Champlain and his compatriots on the expedi-
tion to the Iroquois country reached Lake Ontario near
Kingston, Ontario, Canada, thus bringing the expedition
within the water limit of our town.
1655 French Missionary priests, Father Chaumonoit and
Father Dablon, were here as missionaries among the
Onondaga Indians.
1757 French occupied Carleton Island.
1968 Cape Vincent Community Library opened.
1775 English occupied Carleton Island - shipbuilding on the
Island. 1969 First Museum opened. Museum located on Market Street
was first framed house built in early 1800s by Borland
1811 LeRay de Chaumont influenced Family.
changing name to Cape Vincent.
1972 Thousand Islands Junior-Senior High School opened at

The Lighthouse, one of the oldest on the Great Lakes, stands at the outlet of Lake Ontario and the head of the St. Lawrence
River. Officially in May 1981, the Coast Guard left the Lighthouse, and the living quarters are now used by Hostelling

International. However, the Coast Guard still administers the light tower with automation operations coming from Oswego.
Tibbetts Point has the only operating Fresnel Lens on Lake Ontario.
