WELCOME TO 2021 IRONMAN® UK It gives me greater pleasure than ever before to welcome you to the 2021 edition of Supersapiens IRONMAN UK. Since the event was last held in July 2019, the world has changed dramatically, and it has been a turbulent and distressing period for everyone. We all recognise the positive contribution IRONMAN UK makes to the lives of athletes and local communities both directly and indirectly which is why I am delighted that we will be able to return to racing in Bolton in 2021. Over the preceding decade, Supersapiens IRONMAN UK has become a stand-out event in the British triathlon calendar. This has been made possible by the continued support of residents and councils across the area plus you, the athletes, whose dedication and commitment to racing with IRONMAN is unparalleled. Whilst the environment in which the event is held has changed and you will notice small changes in how the event is operated, we remain committed to delivering a first-class experience for athletes and celebrating what makes the IRONMAN community and local area so special. The event set-up remains like previous editions, commencing in the tranquil lakeside surroundings of Pennington Flash and concluding in the historic and vibrant centre of Bolton. One significant change is to the bike course for 2021 which retains its challenging nature but now includes an additional lap of the Lancashire countryside, reducing total elevation. This year more than any other, I must give credit to Bolton Council who have supported us to ensure we deliver a safe experience for athletes and residents alike. Also, the continued backing of our generous event sponsors and our large band of dedicated volunteers whose effort make delivering Supersapiens IRONMAN UK possible. I hope you enjoy your return to racing with IRONMAN. I personally cannot wait to see the smiling and determined faces of thousands of athletes across the event weekend. Make sure you are ready for any weather conditions and respect your fellow competitors, residents, and volunteers by following the safety measures we have introduced this year. Most importantly, relish your return to racing and I look forward to seeing you all at the Finish Line. Sam Brawn IRONMAN UK Race Director 2

SWIM IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT BIO SECURITY FOR YOUR WETSUIT AND SWIM EQUIPMENT We are committed to protecting the shoreline at Pennington Flash as the site is of Special Scientific Interest. Please ensure your spectators honour the barrier placements and please make sure they do not walk on the water’s edge. It is important we ensure no invasive species or diseases enter the waters at Pennington Flash which can affect fish and other wildlife. Please follow the CHECK, CLEAN & DRY guidelines below to ensure your wetsuit and swimming equipment is suitable for swimming at Pennington Flash: CHECK your wetsuit for live organisms. All clothing and equipment should be thoroughly inspected and any visible debris (mud, plant or animal matter) should be removed and left at the water body where it was found. Particular attention must be paid to the seams and seals of wetsuits. Any pockets of pooled water should be emptied. CLEAN and wash your wetsuit thoroughly. Use hot water where possible. All clothing, craft and equipment should be hosed down or pressure-washed on site. If facilities are not available clothing, craft and equipment should be carefully contained, e.g. in plastic bags, until these facilities can be found. Washings should be left at the water body where the equipment was used or contained and not allowed to enter any other watercourse or drainage system (i.e. do not put them down the drain or sink). DRY your wetsuit - some species can live for many days in moist conditions. Make sure you don’t transfer water elsewhere. Thoroughly drying is the best method for disinfecting clothing, craft and equipment. Clothing, craft and equipment should be thoroughly dry for 48 hours before it is used elsewhere. Some non-native species can survive for as many as 15 days in damp conditions and up to 2 days in dry conditions, so the drying process must be thorough. ATHLETE GUIDE 2021 30
