Your new life starts now QUT is a young university. You can feel that energy from the moment you walk onto campus. The buildings are spacious, open and collaborative. The facilities are state of the art. Not just the labs and studios, but the swimming pools, tennis courts and athletics track. The fun starts from day one. There’s more to uni than study. There are barbeques, concerts and clubs to join. This is where you’ll form friendships that can last a lifetime. There’s a great sense of community at QUT too. Students who have travelled from overseas, interstate or outside of Brisbane feel right at home here. And so will you. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands where QUT now stands, pay respect to their Elders—past, present and emerging—and acknowledge the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play within the QUT community. 3
A crash course in saving lives Do you have what it takes? There’s one way to find out—testing your skills in a real- life situation. Paramedic science students undertake unique training exercises such as these trauma and road accident simulations. They work alongside ambulance, fire and emergency services officers, assessing the situation and devising a plan for saving wounded participants. Did fake news start with Zuckerberg or Gutenberg? Manipulating the news is nothing new. It’s been happening since Gutenberg’s printing press. But there seems to be greater fear of fake news than ever before. Is the influence of Facebook and Twitter as significant as some say? Or is this a social media myth? QUT researchers are digging into the data to find out. In the meantime, avoid being a victim of fake news with these steps—check the source is a recognised news organisation, find references to the story on a mainstream media site and see if it’s been reported by several news agencies. Keep your news real. 10

Real-world courses. Customised. Your future is in your hands. If there’s something you’re dreaming of, see what you can do to make it yours. For example, combine business with biomedical science for a career bringing health discoveries to the marketplace. Double your options with a double degree. Study two degrees at the same time, saving time and money, and graduate with two qualifications in as little as four years. A double degree can be a real competitive advantage, giving you greater variety in your study and career opportunities, plus friends and networks across two fields. You’ll study the compulsory parts of both single degrees and use the optional units from each degree to complete your second degree. This means you’ll usually have the same number of subjects each semester as a single degree student. Explore different fields. Many of our courses offer individual elective units, a minor (four units) or a second major (six to eight units). This flexibility can help you to expand your knowledge into fields that your degree doesn’t traditionally explore—making study more stimulating and preparing you for a more agile future in the workforce. Check out our full range of courses on pages 26-32. Start studying sooner with mid-year entry. Don’t wait until next year. There are a range of courses offering entry in July.
