NEWS, A N N O U N C E ME N T S AND NEW BEGINNINGS FROM C H RY S A L I S C E N T E R Building Connections WINTER 2019 Holiday Celebrations Chrysalis Center clients and staff enjoyed the holiday season by celebrating in a variety of ways! From a holiday party in our Recovery and Empowerment Center with Santa and Mrs. Claus, to gingerbread decorating at Hudson View Commons and Valentine the Clown making toy deliveries at Victory Gardens, each of our housing sites truly enjoyed the holidays in a magical way. In addition, our Annual Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale was a success, providing a special holiday memory for many of our neighbors and families. Thank you to The Hartford for sponsoring the event, along with all our wonderful volunteers and supporters who helped make the season brighter for so many!
“ ” Sharon Says: Dear Friends, 2018 was an amazing year and we couldn’t have done it without your continuous support! Thank you to the many individuals, organizations and local businesses for their contributions and for truly assisting our clients and families throughout the year. Some of our exciting accomplishments include: • A $2 Million federal grant award to combat homelessness in the State of Connecticut. These critical funds will help us provide a pathway to self-sufficiency for individuals experiencing homelessness and those at risk of losing their home. • The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International recognized Chrysalis Center with the highest recommendation for its Community Case Management, Supportive Housing Services and Community Integration Services. With 1,400 standards, Chrysalis Center only received four recommendations, placing them in the top 3% of all health and human service nonprofits in the nation and internationally. • We are pleased to announce construction and renovation of our newest Veteran’s housing project, “The Elms” in Bristol, has reached midway point and is expecting to move nine Veterans in by the Fourth of July holiday. • La Cocina’s catering has grown tremendously this past year and will soon expand its offerings! This new and improved earned revenue program has been developed through our participation in the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving’s exclusive Social Enterprise program. As we look at what lies ahead in the new year, we are excited to bring new opportunities to further our mission. From individuals to families, to schools and organizations, it is because of you that we were able to provide assis- tance to more than 2,727 people last year. We invite you to join us on this journey! Thank you again, and be well, EMPTY BOWLS – MARCH 27, 2019 P lease join us for Empty Bowls on Wednesday, March 27th from 5:00-7:00pm at the TCC. CLIENT SPOTLIGHT: VICKY In her words… I first became a client of the Chrysalis Center in 2013. A few words I would use to describe my life before coming to the Chrysalis Center would be chaotic, depressing and difficult. A few words I would use now would be progressing, accomplishing and healing. My life has changed in such wonderful ways since I began working with my case manager, Danielle. I have become more outgoing than I used to be and I’m so glad to have someone I can really confide in and trust. I know Danielle has my best interest at heart and will always be there for me when I truly vicky need her. She doesn’t give up on me which means so much to me. Danielle has helped me volunteer at a few different places, something I wouldn’t have been able to do on my own in the past. I feel more empowered and I’m really proud of myself for it. I am also healthier. I still have a long way to go of course but I definitely feel a lot healthier mentally than how I used to feel. I highly recommend the Chrysalis Center to anyone who is going through some rough times and feel they need a helping hand in getting on the right track again. It’s such a wonderful and helpful place where you know you’re in good hands and can count on them with just about anything. Governor Lamont Visits Chrysalis Center W e were thrilled to welcome Governor Ned Lamont to Chrysalis Center at the start of the year. The Governor spent time visiting with clients and staff and learning more about the wonderful support services we provide to individuals. He even took part in a drumming circle, which provides clients with a therapeutic outlet to help manage stress or other mental health issues. Clients enjoyed spending time talking with the Governor about issues which are meaningful to them. COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Rotary Club of Avon-Canton T hank you to Rotary Club of Avon-Canton for their sponsorship of our upcoming Empty Bowls event with a $1,000 donation to Freshplace. Longtime supporters to Chrysalis Center, the Rotary Club’s motto of “Service Above Self” focuses on providing humanitarian service, encouraging high ethical standards in all vocations, and building good will and peace in the world. We are truly grateful for their wonderful support and friendship!
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: ALL SAINTS ORTHODOX CHURCH J ust over three and a half years ago, Fr. James Parnell of All Saints Orthodox Church in Hartford approached Chrysalis Center to learn more about the organization and how his parishioners could become more involved. Since then, All Saints has been a wonderful supporter of the organization by volunteering their time, talent and treasure to Chrysalis Center. All Saints volunteers host Bingo Night for Cosgrove Commons and Legion Court residents, serve Thanksgiving meals for clients, and host a Memorial Day picnic for Veterans. They have also been instrumental in collecting and donating holiday gifts for clients, as well as support year-round events and fundraisers. Thank you to Fr. Parnell and All Saints parishioners for their wonderful support of Chrysalis Center!
