Lorella Springs For the May School holiday Peta Jones and I went to Lorella as we had the Territorians Tourism Voucher. We had a fantastic time. Lorella Springs is about 979 km from Darwin and it was a long trip. Disaster struck as soon we hit the gravel on the final 140 km stretch of road! When we hit the gravel Chris decided to deflate the tires to make the trip smoother – when he put the lid of the valve off he discovered that the valve was faulty. Luckily for him, he had a spare set of tyres. We had been told that the trip from Cape Crawford to Lorella was 4 hours due to the rough condition of the road. – we were able to get there in 2 hours. We think it may be because Chris had a new set of driving lights which really lit the road ahead of us up. We finally arrived at 8.00 in the dark. We were pleased that we had booked a motel room for the first and the final nights of our stay at Lorella. We camped at the homestead for 4 nights on the first night we noticed that the board around the tool box on the drawbar of the trailer had fallen off – however it was not loose! We had a fantastic time, we did lots of swimming in waterfalls in many location including the Tawallah Pool. Wildfire Gorge, Hanging Garden, Hidden Pools, Tear drop Falls and Rosie Rock Pool, We also did kayaking at Gateway Gorge, flying fox swamp and Eagle Nest Billabong. We also made a trip up to Nanny’s Retreat which was a trip on its own as the road had just been open up. We had been told that there was a muddy section that was about 200 metres long and that we would have to make a detour of 5 km though bush land to get to the other side. We were one of the first people to get through on the track. We departed on the last day going back via Borroloola as we had heard that the petrol station in Cape Crawford was selling limited diesel as the place was being sold and the old owner was trying to limit amount of stocks to have available when the store is sold. We believe that if Braydon had been there he would had been having a great time getting people out of boggy con- ditions as we heard along the vine line that people were getting bogged in areas that they shouldn’t have been in as the road was not open. We stopped for an overnight stop in Katherine where we took a flight on a helicopter over Katherine Gorge. Upon returning home to Darwin we discovered that the trailer tool box had got lose and we were just grateful that it had not slipped off during the trip. It was a fantastic trip and I would recommend if anyone wants to go there to go there especially at the beginning of the Dry season as the waterfalls were flowing. 26 27
Mary River Trip Saturday 1 May 2021 Mary River Trip May Day Long Weekend by Neale Townley After a few little dramas on the Saturday morning, namely having to get a new 2nd Battery fitted to the Hilux before meeting at Maccas at 9am, we all met at Coolalinga Maccas. Who was all? Namely the Wright Tribe (Kylie, Trina, Scarlette and their chauffeur Stuart) plus Tania and myself. Gary Huckel messaged the day before and said he would meet us Mary River Wilderness Retreat in the evening. So off we went, with Stuart leading due to the fact the trailer did not have any lights showing. Diagnosis at Maccas found no trailer plug, which Stuart freely admitted he hadn’t gotten around to fitting yet. FYI full story came out at the Club meeting for which he won the Butchers Award. We arrived at Mary River Wilderness Retreat around 10:30am ish, and pro- ceeded to set up camp. The retreat was very packed for the long weekend, fuller than I was expecting. We then spent the afternoon, sipping beverages, chilling and gas bagging. After such a hectic day about 10pm ish we all decided to head to bed, whilst I wandered up to the toilets before sleep, and who should I find driving down was Gary, he only recognised the wonderful Club Shirt I was wearing lol, so I told him where we were camped, and he went to setup his camp. Sunday morning was a lazy wake up and get up. Breakfast was had before we all set off, with Gary riding with the Wrights, to have a look at the tourist sites. That being Couzens Lookout and Rockhole before wandering up to Shady Camp where we had lunch under a tree in the camping area. After lunch we made our way back to camp after relieving a fallen tree of about 3m of its limbs for the fire that night. The party ventured down the road for dinner to the reopened Bark Hut Inn, where we enjoyed several pizzas between us. Then followed a quiet evening sit- ting around the camp fire was had by all, listening to music courtesy of Gary until we all went to bed at Various times. Monday arrived and we all slowly packed up and made our separate ways back to Darwin. Overall a quiet weekend, and unfortunately the tracks were not open but always next time. Neale Townley. 28 29
Adelaide River Old Coach Road Awesome club trip yesterday exploring the Adelaide River region as the first vehicles to complete the track after what many would agree was a well needed wet season!! Surprisingly not as much water as we expected, but that didn’t disappoint us with 2 water crossings, two boggings (one self extraction after repairing some electrical issues), and many thousands of grass seeds. Some track build- ing and winching of trees was needed at the creek crossing which we expect- ed but we all made it unscathed. I’ll leave the majority of detail for the next club meeting so as not to give too much away.... there’s a solid butchers award nomination coming up!! Departed Noonamah servo at 815 and hit the track once we aired down at 920. Landed on the Daly river road at 615 and made our way back to D- town. Great trip and just the beginning of many more club events for the dry season!! Apologies for the short notice for those who weren’t able to change plans in time, but stay tuned for more adventures of our great land planned to be released soon. 30 31
