Presidents Report Rob Shergold 0419 717 820 president@brisbane4wdclub.org Hi all Another great month in club saw our travellers return from Cape York. Some took a while coming back after blowing up their turbo on the way. Congratulations Chris and everyone on running a great trip as they all seemed to have had a top time. Looking forward to the verbal trip report at the next club meeting. I was very pleased that the club listened to Dan speak on the Personal Locator Beacons. Thank you to the attending club members for voting for us to buy two of them, as safety is a top priority for us. Hopefully we will never have to use them. I really enjoyed the Corroboree at Kenilworth this year. Jackie and I went just to relax, and we did. On the Saturday morning Brett and Molly led a gentle trip that was just great. They have a real gift in leading, just the right trip at the right time. In 2 years time is our 50th anniversary as a club. We are ap- parently the oldest in Queensland. It has been suggested that we make it a special year with a number activities. Let us know if you have any ideas. Thanks Nigel, Brett and Rosey for the discussions so far. Keep on going on the trips and enjoy. Rob 4

CAPE YORK – WEEK 1! The trip to Cape York was such a huge trip, with so many places and events, that a single report just won’t do the trick. Instead, we will break up the report into three, each covering about a week of the trip. A trip of this magnitude, just over 6500 for the Hilux takes a little bit of planning. In our case, over a peri- od of 12 months, we had about 6 planning meetings as well as quite a bit of discussion on Facebook and at Club meetings. We had a reasonable itinerary to follow, but were flexible about altering it as we went so that we could get the most out of the trip. The only exception was a fishing trip we had booked in Seisia and accommodation booked in Weipa. The list of those coming changed quite a bit over time, but settled on; Chris and Ruth in the Hilux, Mark in his BT50, Pete (the turtle) in his newly equipped Hilux, Danno in his petrol 80, Arthur and Charlotte in the Prado, Steve and Cheryl in their GU, Graham and his son Tony in the D-Max and visitors, Mason and Wen- dy in the mighty Mitsi. We also had a couple of Jeeps from the Brisbane Jeep Club (Cedric and Greg + Families) join us at various times on the trip. All made their way separately to the meeting spot on 3rd Sep at Mt Malloy, outside Cairns. As some are people of leisure, they could take their time, while others, like us poor workers did the 1900km run in 2 days. We started off heading into the Daintree, across the ferry and on to the Bloomfield track. Bloomfield can be very steep and slippery in parts, but generally quite an easy run. This was a great intro to the trip as it had some beautiful scenery, lunch on the beach, a couple of small water crossings and our first hit of dirt and corrugations. Our first stop was the iconic Lion’s Den Hotel, where we camped for the night, grabbing a few beers and a meal. Next morning we headed off the Cooktown for a quick look before taking Battle Camp Road (corrugated, but a simple 2wd run) through to Laura. Following a tip from a local, we stopped at Codfish waterhole, where we saw the biggest Croc we found on the trip, a solid 4-5m. After a short stop at Old Laura station, we headed into Laura itself for a night behind the Laura Pub, enjoying another few beers and a camp fire. We were now settling into the routine of packing up, driving and setting back up again, something we did a lot during the trip! Next stop was at Musgrave Roadhouse, where for some afternoon entertainment, the owner feeds the fresh water crocs that they have living in their waterhole. With a lot of klm’s still ahead of us, the next day saw us travel up through Coen to Archer River Roadhouse, which had the most expensive fuel we saw on the trip $2.00/l. Luckily we had heard this earlier and topped up fuel at Coen (1.75/l) where we also stopped for a couple of beers at the Exchange Hotel. By this time, we were ready to hit something a bit harder, so took on the Frenchman’s track across to Chilli Beach. This offered a number of challenges, including some steep rocky slopes, deep water cross- ings, big steps, spectacular scenery and some huge ruts and wombat holes. This made for some great 4wding, some hairy moments and a lot of wheel lifting! The 53km track took us 6 hours to travel, so all up, it took us 9 hours to get to Chilli Beach camp ground. Whilst beautiful, Chilli beach had a wind that would blow the horns off a bull! Our planned two night stay and rest became a single night quick sleep, then head off to Bramwell Junction to take on the Telegraph track, but more about that next month! Chris Morahan 12

2017 Corroboree at Bluff Creek, Kenilworth On Friday Mum and I hooked the van up and headed off to the Corroboree. When we got there, we collected our goodie bag and met the others to set up camp. Saturday morning saw some members going out on early drives; we headed off on an easy one which took us to a lookout. It only took about 1 ½ hours to complete. Saturday night there was a band playing, which included Elvis. Sunday morning once again some members went on more trips and Mum and I headed off on a Medium Trip. This was great fun as I got a Go Pro for my birthday so I had fun film- ing. When we were back at camp, they had the Tug of Snatch in the afternoon which Mitsubishi Club won. Then the car Jam where they try and shove as many people as you can into a car. We managed to get 23 and the winners had 24. Football Grand Final – GO COWBOYS. Well I was hoping, but maybe next year. Raffle prizes were drawn and some of our members won prizes. Monday morning it was raining. So we packed up and headed back home after a great weekend with a great club. One thing I did learn over the weekend, you don’t need an alarm clock when Matty is around. Thanks for waking me Matty!!! Josh Facey 16

PROGRESSIVE DINNER On Saturday 14th October we held the annual Progressive Dinner. The theme this year was ‘Flower Power’. We started by meeting at the Pine Rivers Showground. Everyone tried to show Flower Power sense — flowers on their heads, tops, pants, and hats, and the Power Flower fam- ily. Everyone left cars at the showgrounds and we travelled by bus to our first hosts Tracey and Grizzly’s house. Although it was far in the bus, we had lots of laughing, singing, joking and Matt the driver skilfully passed every bend. After a while we found ourselves at Tracey’s house. It had a beautiful garden and ‘starter’ table. Colourful and tasty food and a Jacaranda tree added more beauty with its flowers. It was the theme of flower power. After finishing the starter we left with Tracey and Grizzly to go to our next destination for mains. Everybody was happy and tried to keep the smile on Matty’s face. The sky got dark as we arrived at Irene and Andy Coventry’s house just as the rain started. Everyone ran into the house. Some friends were inside or outside under cover. Irene and Andy had lots of yummy food for everyone’s taste. After dinner Tyler came out wearing a red ladies dress with black long hair. Everybody laughed and took photos of him. The rain had turned to showers as we were leaving to go to Brenda’s house for dessert. Her house was far away so we had plenty of time for fun on the bus. At Brenda’s house we sat under cover and the rain was lovely. Brenda and her mum Barbara provided lots of beautiful yummy desserts. Brenda’s children Cooper and Aylssa had helped to prepare them. After dessert , presents were given to the hosts, and also to the winners:- best male Daryl O’Rafferty; best female Sharon Bourke, best couple Danny and Heidi, most outra- geous Tyler Broughton. We left Brenda’s house to go back to the showgrounds to collect our cars. It was a beautiful and memorable night. Many thanks to the hosts, Tracey, Grizzly, Irene, Andrew, Brenda and Barbara. Special thanks to our responsible bus driver Matt. Mohammad Jowkar 25

Sergeant at Arms Melanie Bartlett 0438 096 665 sargentatarms@brisbane4wdclub.org Happy November! Last month we issued fines for sneaky generator power theft, deplorable caravan reversing, and the abandonment of a new association membership card in a port-a-loo. We also issued our first interclub fine to the Mitsubishi Club, for Rob Ellis’ use of a prime mover air horn to wake up sleeping B4WDC members from very close range, at Corroboree. Danny Power was awarded the Sergeant’s Get Out of Gaol medallion, for taking time out from his own Fraser Island holiday to help other less experienced 4WDers navigate the soft sand to the barge. There are a few outstanding unpaid fines in the ol’ Sarge fine book that I’ll be looking to call in shortly, so if you know you owe fine money from the last few months, best to get it in the box before too long. 28
