President’s Message Hello, GSSCC members, As we read this issue of Shepherd Sports, many of us are training hard for the trial season and many clubs have held or are hosting trials, including their Regional Champion- ships. Thank you for being active in the GSSCC! I hope everyone enjoys their training and trialing and accomplish- es their goals. I believe the backbone of the GSSCC and the reason we continue to grow is from all the hard work that volunteers and our clubs do! The GSSCC Board of Directors is work- ing on incentives for our clubs and club members. Stay tuned for further details. The 2018 Canadian Championship committee is working very hard to host one of the best Canadian German Shepherd Dog Championships and Sieger Shows ever. It is being held from July 25 to 29 and hosted by the Lower Mainland German Shepherd Dog Club in Surrey, B.C. There is more information on the Championships at www. gsscc2018.com. Please be advised that the next GSSCC Annual General Meeting will be held during the Canadian Championships at the Championship venue, which is the Lower Mainland German Shepherd Dog Club, on Friday, July 27, 2018 immediately following the conclusion of the IPO trial for the day. An exact time will be available after the schedule is completed. Darin M. Clarke President GSSCC With trial season already under way, here are some guidelines for handler etiquette. 1. Know the rules and show your dog by them. 2. Show good sportsmanship at all times — even when things don’t go well. 3. If you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all — even on social media. 4. Take pride in your team. 5. Remember that you earn your score as a team. 6. Handle your dog to the best of your ability at all times. 7. Always show respect to the judge and trial personnel — even when things don’t go well. 8. Value the learning experience of the trial. Spring is in the air and even though winter was good to us, spring brought with it a few big nor’easters, and our club field was buried in snow even after being ploughed a few times. The tough ones continued to train throughout the winter outside, prepping for the upcoming trial season. No matter what the weather, the FSC team presses on! The East Regionals are just around the corner, as they are tak- ing place in PEI this month, and we are all looking forward to kicking off the competition season. Club Reports Synergy Working Dog Club Another winter season come and gone, and here we are with the new season, new trials and new goals to aim for. Not that the winter wasn’t good. Winter is a great time to focus on quiet, detail-oriented work indoors. The trial manager certification seminar is already behind us, and with some new members, young dogs, and at least two trials and a workshop planned, we’re looking forward to a busy 2018. Dwyn Tomlinson Right New Synergy member Marie and her young dog, who knows how to steal the scene if not the cake! Photos: Dwyn Tomlinson. West Coast German Shepherd Schutzhund Club The West Coast Club recently held its 29th annual in- vitational workweek, which was attended by nearly 70 dog handlers from around North America and Australia. Workweek is a free workshop, at which people who have demonstrated a serious interest in and commitment to learning about the West Coast training method can come and immerse themselves in training for a week at our club. The West Coast Club has always believed in openly sharing their training and enthusiasm for the sport with others. To that end, the club has open training and anyone who wishes is welcome to come and watch and participate in any regular club training session. In addition, once a year the West Coast club hosts a train- ing workshop for those people who want more! Although this year’s weather was probably the worst-ev- er at this time, it did not dampen anyone’s enthusiasm. The West Coast club believes in following in the foot- steps of the many German handlers and trainers who were the foundation for our learning the sport of Schutzhund and who gave freely of their time and knowledge. Canada has followed the tradition of openly sharing training rather than making the sport about personal profit. Thank you to our major sponsors: NorthWest Tanklines and DogSport Gear. Further, the West Coast club makes an annual donation to a local police K9 unit to support the working dogs in our community.
