Welcome to Ventspils – a hospitable city on the shore of the
Baltic Sea, where a tidy, child-friendly urban environment and
innovative production facilities coexist.
In the streets of Ventspils colourful flowers bloom on every corner,
which decorate flower beds, flower pyramids and sculptures. The
largest of them is the Flower Cow, which is one of the 27 cow
sculptures displayed in the city and located next to the only
drawbridge in Latvia over the River Venta, always greeting the
residents and city guests of Ventspils.
In the heart of the city, in the Big Square, the Ventspils Concert
Hall “Latvija” is located, which was opened in 2019. As part of its
uniqueness, it boasts two world-class musical instruments – pipe
concert organ and the world’s largest vertical concert piano.
The fountain “Frigate “Whale”” next to the Concert Hall “Latvija”
complements the splendid and contemporary features of the
Lielais Square, but when lit as it gets dark, it creates a special
atmosphere for the visitors and passers-by of the Lielais Square.
It is only one of the ten fountains located in different parts of Flower cow
Ventspils, together creating a unique city landscape.

CONCERT HALL “LATVIJA”
Concert Hall “Latvija” – a space for music, art and education
with unique content, characterised by excellent acoustics,
a selected repertoire and a wide range of technical
possibilities. Visit it to enjoy a unique experience in art,
world-class music and architecture.
The Great Hall of the Concert Hall “Latvija” houses two unique
world-class musical instruments – the largest vertical
concert piano in the world created by Latvian-born piano
master, Dāvids Kļaviņš, and the manual acoustic concert
organ made by “Johannes Klais Orgelbau GmbH & Co. KG” in
Germany.
The manual acoustic organ has two consoles – one is
stationary and the other – portable, providing an opportunity
to play the organ remotely from the stage and for the audience
to watch the organist’s complex musical movement with the
involvement of the entire body.
The repertoire is created respecting the local and national
context and at the same time offering the listeners a different
and diverse artistic programme, in which the main emphasis is
placed on the first and the only concerts of foreign musicians
in Latvia and the Baltics, as well as on the premieres of new
works. The opportunities provided by the Concert Hall allow
the hosting of world-class artists and internationally significant
concert programmes that have not been experienced in Latvia
so far.
The pride of the Concert Hall is the undoubtedly impeccable
acoustic facilities, which have been recognised as excellent by
industry professionals, as well as Latvian and foreign artists.
The author of the Concert Hall project is the office of German
architect David Cook “Haascookzemmrich Studio 2050”.
The uniqueness of the building is characterised by the well-
considered energy efficiency solutions, as well as by the
multifunctional space planning. The layout and logistics of
the premises allow the successful coexistence of the Large
and Small Hall of the Concert Hall “Latvija”, the classrooms of
the Secondary School of Music, the music library, the sound
recording studio and the café – all of this is located under a

single roof. If required, the small hall can be transformed into
an open-air stage, which allows several thousand visitors to
see the performance of the artists.
The concert hall is located in the heart of Ventspils – in the
Lielais Square, where the residents of Ventspils traditionally
celebrate the New Year, gather for festivities and dedicate
time to leisurely walks. The unique, internationally awarded
“Frigate “Whale”” fountain has found a home here. The
fountain was inspired by the historical events of the 17th
century, when sailboats were made in Ventspils, including the
corvette-type “Wallfish” sailboat with an impressive number
of masts (20) and yards (8).

LIVE HISTORY
CASTLE OF THE
LIVONIAN ORDER
The Castle of the Livonian Order, where Ventspils Museum
has been located since September 2001, is the oldest
surviving building in Ventspils, constructed in the second
half of the 13th century, and the castle can also be considered
the oldest Medieval Fortress in Latvia, the original volume
of which has been preserved almost unchanged. The Castle
Chapel is the oldest sacral space in Kurzeme. The history
of Ventspils is closely related to the castle and it can be
explored by visiting the rich exposition of the Museum,
which occupies 14 rooms in total.
The Castle of the Livonian Order regularly hosts educational
classes for children and young people, as well as exhibitions
related to contemporary art and history, and especially
concerts of Medieval and Baroque music.

SEASIDE OPEN-AIR
MUSEUM AND TRAIN
“MAZBĀNĪTIS”
The green island of Ventspils Museum is the Seaside Open-
Air Museum, the open-air exposition of which can be visited
every year until 31 October. The Museum was founded
in 1954. Next to the fishing boats and the 19th century
residential buildings, there is also a narrow-gauge railway
exposition, the most attractive exhibit of which is the train
“Mazbānītis”, once connecting the coastal fishing villages,
but nowadays providing rides all the way to the Adventure
Hill.
The facilitated environment, with its gorgeous flower
gardens next to the historic buildings and the lively whistles
of the steam locomotive, is especially family-friendly.

A NEW EXPOSITION BUILDING
and a boat shed for restored historical fishing boats
and motor cutters are being built in the Seaside Open-
Air Museum, where all the restored boats and other
fishing-related items will be located, creating a single
exposition reflecting the development of fishing in
North Kurzeme.

FIRE CORRECTION
TOWER
The Fire Correction Tower was restored, making it
available to visitors as an observation tower. The tower
is accessible to visitors, with the possibility of climbing
up the internal stairs to an outdoor observation deck
overlooking the sea.
LIVE HISTORY The military heritage complex was built in 1939, by
starting the construction of the USSR military bases in
Latvia. The 46th Coast Guard Battery contained four
type Б -13 cannon positions. The first battle of this
battery - on 24 June 1941, when the Port of Ventspils
was attacked by a German torpedo boat, which was
driven from the shore of the Baltic Sea with the help of
the battery counter-fire. On the morning of June 28, the
cannons were blown up.

THE HOUSE OF CRAFTS
The House of Crafts was established in an 18th century
building that was reconstructed in 2007, where the oldest
school of the Duchy of Courland was located and to which
the exposition Ancient Classroom (in the 19th century)
was dedicated. There is a weaver’s and potter’s workshop
in the House of Crafts, where you can try out your craft skills
upon prior booking. The House of Crafts has its own Legend
of the Golden Brooch, which was indeed found during the
archaeological monitoring of the building. In the House of
Crafts there is a souvenir shop, and museum pedagogical
classes, as well as various masterclasses related to modern
crafts take place there.

VENTSPILS MARKET
Ventspils Old Town Market is located in a place where Ventspils
City Market Square, Ventspils First Town Hall and other
historical buildings were located at the beginning of the
17th century. The Market Square acquired its current look in
2009 after its reconstruction. In the Market Square you can see
the exposition of weights, volumes and measures created
by sculptor Gļebs Panteļejevs, as well as the bell tower clock,
which plays the melody of the song “Pie dzintara jūras” (By the
Amber Sea) every hour, but at 12:33 noon and 00:33 midnight
it plays a refrain of the song “Uz priekšu, Kurzeme” (Let’s go,
Kurzeme) by Uldis Marhilēvičs.
Ventspils brewery pub “Courlander” and winery “Windau
Wines” are located near the Market Square. Ventspils
Market is open every day, but trading takes place particularly
actively on Fridays and Saturdays. Visitors of the market are
welcomed by attractive and creative traders.

OLD TOWN
In the Old Town of Ventspils, the old network of the streets
and the spatial structure of the squares have been preserved
from the medieval buildings. In the vicinity of the Market
Square, several 17th century buildings have remained, but
the residential building at the intersection of Tirgus Street and
Skolas Street is one of the oldest in Latvia. The International
Writers’ and Translators’ House has been opened in the
Town Hall Square, in the former town hall building. The
fashionably reconstructed Ventspils Main Library and the
Evangelical Lutheran Church of St Nicholas are located
next to it . The Town Hall Square, the Market Square and
Ostas Street Promenade are popular spots for enjoying
walks.

“FANTĀZIJA”
Clambering, climbing, sliding, swinging and jumping – the
youngest guests of the city can enjoy it all in the modern and
bright playground facilities free of charge in the Children’s
Town, Children’s Park “Fantāzija”. Every Sunday at 11:00 am
in the Children’s Town and at 3:00 pm in the Children’s Park
“Fantāzija”, exciting free of charge events for young visitors
are organised with singing, dancing and playing of games

10JŪRMALA PARK
Jūrmala Park invites you to go for walks along the Anchor
Trail, amongst the gorgeous greenery and around the duck
pond with water lilies. The youngest visitors of the park
will appreciate the wooden play towers, while the active
ones – the challenge of the Jungle Trail and outdoor gym
equipment. A picnic place has been set up for leisurely
recreation in the nature, and the historic train “Mazbānītis”
travels through the park.

PĀRVENTA FOREST TRAIL
In Pārventa Forest Park – next to the Children’s Park “Fantāzija”,
surrounded by a pine forest, the most active visitors of the
park are challenged by the Forest Trail with 12 ropes and
cable attractions of different levels of complexity.

COW PARADE
The various cows created within the art and patronage
projects “Cow Parade” that were implemented in 2002 and
2012, have become one of the symbols of Ventspils, and they
have been improved by Latvian, as well as foreign artists. The
cows, located in the vicinity of various points of interest in
the city, invite and help in getting to know Ventspils.

“LEMBERGA HŪTE”
If the weather conditions are suitable, the artificial ski hill
begins its operation in winter. It is equipped with a ski track
and a snowboard park with jumps, slides and rails. The
first skills can be acquired on the training track, as well as true

hill.

A trip with the historic Train “Mazbānītis” can begin at one
of the two destinations – the Seaside Open-Air Museum
or train “Mazbānītis” stop opposite the Adventure Park.
The locomotive road leads through the sandy, forest area
surrounded by dunes, travelling on the tracks past the
authentic stops – “Priedes” and “Pludmale”.

From May to October, the diversity of Ventspils can be
explored on a 45 minute boat ride, visiting the mouth of
the River Venta, Ostas Street Promenade, the Castle of the
Livonian Order, the Old Town, the only drawbridge in Latvia
and the Freeport industrial area, as the boat “Hercogs Jēkabs”
takes you to the very gate of the sea.

During the almost 40-minute-ride you can see the most
remarkable places of Ventspils – the Lielais Square with the
Concert Hall “Latvija” in the city centre, points of interest and
tourist attractions, historical buildings, as well as magnificent
city parks and squares.
An audio guide is available on the train, which reveals
interesting stories about the ancient Ventspils to the city
guests, as well as information about the sights revealed
during the train ride, which is provided in the Latvian,
Russian, English, Lithuanian and German languages.

SPORTS COMPLEXES
The central sports complex has a Basketball Court and an
Ice Hall, athletics arena, stadium, football fields, gym, tennis
courts, as well as a sports stadium. Sports House “Centrs”
has a modern shooting range, where beginners can also
try their hand at shooting, as well as the largest outdoor
climbing wall in the Baltics is located there. At Pārventa
Sports Complex suitable conditions for the development of
indoor football have been created and next to the hall there
is a football stadium, as well as a climbing sports wall has
been created indoors.
The wide range of sports opportunities is complemented by
the rowing base “Dampeļi”, as well as by Ventspils Beach
Volleyball Stadium and several beach volleyball courts
created in the city.
EXTREME SPORTS
An extensive and modern infrastructure for fans of extreme
sports has been created in Ventspils. In the skatepark
everyone can learn roller skating, freestyle cycling and
skateboarding stunts, as well as organise competitions.
There is a BMX track in the Adventure Park and there is a
Wake Park, where no one will be bored, not even those who
are merely accompanying someone else.

IN VENTSPILS
In order to promote sports and a healthy lifestyle, large-scale
sports events are organised in Ventspils, bringing together a
significant number of sports enthusiasts and spectators from
Latvia and other countries. The biggest traditional sports
events are the opening of the tourism and cycling season,
the Latvian Nordic Walking Festival and the Adventure
Park Marathon, as well as other events. In summer, Ghetto
Games, which is the largest festival of extreme sports in
Latvia, takes place in Ventspils.
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
For maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the sports complexes of
the Olympic Centre “Ventspils” provide access to modern
athletics and aerobics halls, swimming pools, two tennis
courts, and more than 34 sports clubs. Open days are held
every year to introduce these and other sports opportunities
in Ventspils. Taking care of the well-being and health of
Ventspils residents, as well as guests, free outdoor gym
equipment has been installed in many parts of the city.
Taking advantage of the proximity to the sea, it is planned to
develop resortology studies in Ventspils.

BLUE FLAG BEACH
Ventspils Blue Flag Beach attracts holidaymakers with its
natural beauty – deep sun bathing spots in the dunes and
a white, fine sand seashore, as well as infrastructure created
for the convenience of guests – wooden footbridges
leading to the sea, children’s playgrounds, benches, as well
as the surfers’ area.
The long-distance hiking route “Jūrtaka” leads along the

Compliance with international quality standards is confirmed
by the Blue Flag Certificate.
Access to the sea is provided by constructed wooden
footbridges. At the highest point of the fifth footbridge
of the Blue Flag Beach there is a unique environmental
object – the Contour Mark of Latvia, with benches and an
access path to the platform. The ninth footbridge leads from
Jurmala Park to the nudist beach, but the tenth footbridge
is suitable for dog walking.

PROMENADE
The South Pier Promenade is a place for enjoying romantic
walks, beautiful sunsets, sea waves and ships entering the
port. The 19 m high Observation Tower, equipped with
binoculars, offers a wonderful view of the city and the sea
from above. The 4 m high sculpture “Cow-Sailor” has also
found its place here; the fishing vessels “Azova” and “Grots”
are available for viewing, as well as the giant “Chair” made
of anchor chain links.

GARDEN
Along with the start of the tourist season, in spring
Ventspils Deer Garden of 32 ha will be opened once
again, which is located next to Lake Būšnieki. Visitors
will be offered the opportunity to see red deer in their
natural habitat and enjoy a unique adventure – a safari
trip, which includes hand-feeding of the animals.

LAKE BŪŠNIEKI
Lake Būšnieki nature trail with footbridge and viewing
platform in a “Natura 2000” territory gives everyone the
opportunity to take the 8 km cycle-route around the lake – a
pedestrian and bicycle trail has been built around the lake,
with a 187 m long pedestrian dock and a viewing platform
for bird-watching at the end. For those who enjoy an active
lifestyle, a health trail has been built with 10 gymnastics
stands.
There is a facilitated swimming and picnic area by Lake
Būšnieki, bicycle stands, a boat can be rented at the
boat base, and footbridges have been installed for the
convenience of surfers.
The swimming place of Lake Būšnieki is located on the
southern shore of the lake, at the entry from Talsu Street.

STALDZENE BLUFF

an old fishing village and a place for walks and swimming,

FLOWER SCULPTURES
Flower sculptures have become the business card of
Ventspils – already in the spring thousands of different
flowers bloom in the flower beds. Gorgeous accents are
brought to the city by flower sculptures – Duck Family in the
Children’s Town, Underwater World at the Beach Water Park,
Rabbit Family at the Adventure Park, Ladybirds at Ostas
Street Promenade and Family of Ladybirds on a Daisy in
Pārventa, Bobsleigh Team at New Town Square, Basketball
at the Olympic Centre “Ventspils”, as well the impressive-
sized Flower Cow in Sarkanmuiža meadow. The Flower
Clock tells the time in the city centre.
REŅĶA GARDEN
Not far from the city centre is Reņķa Garden, next to which
there is a pond with a sparkling fountain and lively ducks,
as well as fascinating environmental objects for children –
fairy tale characters, pet sculptures, playing equipment
Grasshopper and Ladybug, as well as a swing. The park
is also popular with fans of active recreation, who use the
comfortable paths for running and Nordic walking as well
as exercise using the outdoor gym equipment. In summer,
Reņķa Garden welcomes concerts, guest performances,
open-air parties and other outdoor events.

BUOYS, SPAR BUOYS, PILOT SHIP
AND LIGHTHOUSE OF LOVE
In the extension of Ostas Street Promenade a view opens up to the River
Venta, the sea gate, the old port workshops, an impressive collection
of buoys (14 buoys and spar buoys) and the exhibited pilot ship
“Rota”, which operated in Ventspils Port for many years. At the entrance
of the small fishing port there is an environmental object called the
“Lighthouse of Love”.
BICYCLE LANES
In Ventspils, the total pedestrian paths and bicycle lanes have
already reached 63.39 km in length, which is the second
longest section of bicycle paths in Latvia after Riga. There are
comfortable bicycle stands of interesting shapes provided
at recreation places favoured by cyclists, but in three places
in Ventspils – at Ostas Street Promenade, next to Pārventa
Library and Ventspils Adventure Park – bicycle pumps are
publicly available. Ventspils will continue to work on the
development of bicycle lanes in the city, thus planning to
create the longest pedestrian and bicycle lane section in
Latvia in the coming years.

The landscape of Ventspils City is refreshed by ten different
sparkling fountains – the latest of them are “Lietussargs”
(The Umbrella) fountain in Newspaper Alley, “Kuģu vērotājs”
(Ship Watcher) fountain on Ostas Street Promenade, “Saules
laiviņas” (Sun Boats) fountain at New Town Square,
“Dzirnakmens” (Millstone) fountain at Dzirnavu Square,
“Kāpu priede” (Dune Pine) next to Pārventa Library, “Lāses”
(Drops) fountain next to Ventspils High School, Vidumupīte
Fountain, fountain at Reņķa Garden Pond, the colourful
fountain of the Adventure Park and the unique “Fregate
“Valzivs”” (Frigate “Whale”) fountain, which adorns the
Lielais Square.

SCIENCE AND
INNOVATION CENTRE
CREATIVE INDUSTRIES Construction began in October 2019, but it is planned
to welcome the first guests in early 2022. The main task
of the Science and Innovation Centre will be to tell
visitors about physics, mathematics, engineering
and technologies in a simple way to raise awareness
of science and its all-encompassing nature. In order to
learn these topics, visitors will have access to a total
of interactive exhibits, as well as the opportunity to
participate in 20 training programmes and 6 technical
creative workshops, as well as to participate in at least
6 science shows.
In the department of the Innovation Centre it is planned
to create universal office premises for attracting
and supporting young entrepreneurs, as well as
for creating new jobs. A large part of the centre’s
premises will be made available to merchants, mostly
entrepreneurs in the information technology sector. The
Innovation Centre provides premises for rent for young
entrepreneurs, with at least 90 new workplaces.

Ventspils Digital Centre offers a great opportunity to visit
various technology workshops. The digital centre is an
educational and interesting stop for school excursions. Ten
different technology workshops are available here, but the
theme of the workshops can also be adapted to specific

Ventspils University College (VeA) is a state higher
education institution that implements study programmes
at all levels, including lifelong learning, as well as engages
in scientific activities. VeA has 3 faculties – Translation
Studies, IT and Economics and Management and 16 study
programmes. In addition to academic life, active scientific
operation takes place at VeA in the fields of economics and
business, linguistics, natural sciences and engineering. The
Institute of Engineering Sciences “Ventspils International
Radio Astronomy Centre” (VSRC) is the cornerstone of
VeA research, in the centre of which is the unique Radio
Telescope Complex in Irbene. Those who are interested are
welcome to get acquainted with this object through a prior
booked excursion, where it will be possible to get acquainted
with the radio telescopes, historical exposition and space
exploration in Latvia accompanied by a guide.
