EXCLUSIVE CATACOMBS & BONE CHAPEL TOUR at NIGHT (2 h 30 m)

Become one of the first people ever to explore the Roman
Catacombs after normal closing hours when you descend in the
Catacombs of Santa Priscilla at night to learn the history of Roman
burial rites and early Christianity. Your tour starts in the Capuchin
Crypt, better known as the Bone Chapel, because it is festooned
with the mortal remains of some 4,000 deceased monks. As you
take it all in with your small group of 15 people or less, your expert
guide will explain the monks interesting beliefs on life and death
which have motivated the creation of such a macabre memorial.
Afterwards, you’ll hop on a private, air-conditioned minibus and
head to the Catacombs of Santa Priscilla. These particular
catacombs are famous because they hold the oldest known
depiction of the Virgin Mary and were once the final resting place
of seven Popes. The bodies might be gone, but that doesn’t mean
you won’t feel a thrill of excitement as you become one of the first
people to descend into the Catacombs after dark since the era of
Imperial Rome. Because you’ll be there after closing time, you’ll
have the gloomy passageways to yourself and you won’t have any

Italy has no shortage of ancient ruins to admire, from Rome’s famous archeological
park including the Colosseum and Forums to the massive Pompeii. Visitors flock to
these incredible locations, testaments to a fascinating past that is so far away, yet
remarkably present. No visitor to Rome should leave without taking a short day trip
to one such site: the stunningly preserved yet lesser-known ruins of Ostia Antica.
Join our expert guide on a brief journey by local train and prepare yourself to
experience one of the most vivid surviving examples of daily life in an ancient Roman
city. Today, experts are calling Ostia Antica “The Better Pompeii”. Once you have
arrived, it’s easy to understand why. After a brief, 30-minute ride on a local train in
the company of your capable guide, you’ll arrive at ‘Ostia Antica’ or Ancient Ostia.
This ancient city was founded in the 4th century BC and was once inhabited by over
100,000 people. The astonishing well preserved condition of Ostia’s buildings makes
a walk through this archeological park a true step back in time. Structures included
taverns, baths, apartments, markets and theatres – and their intact state so
strikingly exceeds that of the Forums and Pompeii, that it doesn’t seem correct to
call them ‘ruins’. At Ostia Antica, it’s easy to forget the modern world -- in this once
bustling Roman town the ruins are so isolated that houses, roads and telephone
wires are rarely visible. Walk the main street, the Decumanus Maximus, while your
tour guide invites you to imagine a day in the life of a merchant in this active portal
city. The Roman statues that line the walkways are in such good condition you might
feel as though you are walking amongst the ancient Romans themselves! You’ll be
able to imagine what it would have been like to take a dip in the Baths of Neptune
(the community bathhouse), which is crowned by an impressively intact mosaic of
the sea god being drawn by a four-horse chariot. You needn’t be a fan of the theatre
to appreciate Ancient Ostia’s impressive amphitheatre. The surviving structure is
still so stable that you will be able to take your place in the stands as 3,500 ancient
spectators once did back in 12BC when it was first constructed. Ostia’s ruins are so
extensive that they cover 50 hectares, and your guide will play a fundamental role in
navigating the ruins to reveal only the best that Ostia has to offer. Her insight will
play a crucial role in bringing history to life around you as you learn about the
fascinating details of what life was really like for the residents and merchants who
passed through the prosperous ancient commercial port of Rome. At the conclusion
of your tour you can choose to remain at the archeological site, explore the modern
town and nearby beach of Ostia, or simply head back to Rome by train with your

a comfortable drive from Rome on an air-conditioned coach, we begin our day high
above the city and Bay of Naples – on the ridge of the crater of the famous Mount
Vesuvius. Infamous for the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD,
Vesuvius has erupted many times since – and is today regarded as one of the most
dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the 3,000,000 people living in its
immediate vicinity and the volcano’s tendency towards explosive eruptions. Lava
flows have scarred the sides of the volcano, and are visible on the winding road up
to the top. From the parking area, a 20 minute upward hike will take you to the
crater through soft volcanic ash and pumice – and the view from the top makes it
worthwhile. After our adventurous morning we’ll take a leisurely lunch break, where
you can experience the world-famous pizza that Naples is known for. When you are
ready to go – it’s on to the highlight of the day: Pompeii. Sitting in the ominous
shadow of Vesuvius, the now ruined city of Pompeii was a sprawling metropolis of
shops and residences, restaurants, gyms and brothels. Walk Pompeii’s main streets
just as the ancient Romans did – the stones are still worn with tracks from the drawn
carriages that tread them nearly 2000 years ago. We’ll visit the forum, the centre of
Pompeii’s political and social life, as well as view the startling plaster casts of the
victims of the catastrophic eruption that destroyed the city – freezing forever in time
the last second of their life. Join us on this comprehensive and fascinating tour of
Pompeii & the powerful Volcano that destroyed it and discover why this UNESCO

The hike up to the crater of Vesuvius is optional and requires a good level of general
fitness to complete. The hike is uphill at a 14 degree angle and 20 minutes long,
comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. Due to inclement weather
sometimes the crater may be closed, in this case we will offer an extended tour
inside Pompei which will recover any time we would have spent on Vesuvius.

Take a break from the chaos of Rome with a Tuscan holiday. Our tour will focus on
the famous Val D’Orcia region, visiting the historic hill towns of Montepulciano,
Pienza and the vineyards of Montalcino. We’ll explore winding streets, catch
beautiful views of rolling hills from city walls, hear centuries-old Gregorian chants,
stop at a typical Tuscan farm for lunch and have plenty of time left over for sampling
world-famous foods and wine – all locally produced. If you have a taste for Tuscany
but just a short time in Italy, this tour is for you! A comfortable air-conditioned bus
collects us in Rome and by mid-morning we’re in the ancient Etruscan town of
Montepulciano. We’ll tour the town’s most important sights from the exposed brick
Duomo and the main square to Punch’s Tower where Punch (without Judy) strikes
his bell from the clock tower every hour. We’ll see ancient Etruscan wells and
venture deep into medieval wine cellars still used today. We’ll have a bit of free time
for photo ops before we’re back on the bus to our next stop, the vineyards of
Montalcino!
Our arrival in the area of Montalcino is perfectly timed to leave us at Sant’Antimo
Abbey where stone walls ring with the sound of Gregorian chants. Lose yourself in
the mystical ambiance and take the time to enjoy views over some of Tuscany’s
most beautiful vineyards. This is where Italy’s best wine, Brunello di Montalcino, is
produced and we’ll have a chance to enjoy an exemplary bottle on the next leg of
our journey and a sure highlight – lunch. The bus will take us out of town to a typical
Tuscan farm where we will be wined and dined with the finest local produce. Devour
three courses of regional dishes that surprise and delight, washed down with local
wines. Lunch is especially sweet when you know so much of it has been grown,
processed and prepared in this very place! Lunch is followed by a professional
guided wine tasting of the wines produced on site. Back on the bus your guide will
prepare you for our next stop – Pienza. You will hear how this World Heritage site
was conceived by Pope Pius II as a “utopian village” and get information on sites you
may want to visit, such as the two Renaissance palaces and the beautiful Duomo.
Pienza is a small town so we’ll split up here and take some time to wander alone,
enjoying the serenity that is still true to the Pope’s vision today. Marvel at the
ancient architecture, take in views of the rolling countryside beyond or get
hopelessly, wonderfully lost in the town’s winding streets. Whatever you choose to
do, be sure to make time to sample Pienza’s most important product – pecorino
cheese. With satisfied appetites and bags packed with wine, cheese and pici pasta,
we’ll meet back at the bus for a comfortable and scenic drive back to Rome. Take a
well-deserved nap, watch the country fly past or spend the time planning your next
visit to Tuscany – because one visit is never enough!

BOOKING - CONFIRMATION
All tours have to be booked with Gartour by e-mail (gartour@gartour.net – or through our web site www.gartour.it). Some
tours/excursions are on Free Sale basis (with automatic confirmation), while other tours/excursion are On Request and can be considered
valid only after our booking confirmation. Upon confirmation we will advise whether free pick-up service from hotel is possible (if so, we
will advise pick-up time) or if clients will have to make their own way to meeting point to join the tour.
All the rates indicated are in € and intended per person.
PICK-UP IN HOTEL / PRESENTATION AT MEETING POINT
For those tours including pick-up from hotel, clients have to be in the lobby of hotel waiting for tour representative on time. Then clients
will be accompanied to the meeting point and shown the particular bus or guide for their specific tour in their language (please note that
all tours may be performed in more than one language).
IMPORTANT: At certain times there may be unforseen delays in the arranged pick-up times but we kindly request clients to wait in the
hotel lobby.
For those tours not including pick-up from hotel, we ask to all clients to be at the designated meeting points at the advised time in
order participate (usually meeting time is 10-15 minutes prior departure).
No reimbursement wil be granted to clients who is not at the indicated place of pick-up/departure at the time established. Similarly, no
reimbursement will be granted to clients who depart the tour prematurely, lose contact with the guide or who do not complete the
tour/excursion.
CHANGES & CANCELLATIONS
It may happen that, due to operational difficulties or reasons beyond our control (travel conditions, strikes, changes in opening hours,
closure of museums, delays or other unforseen circumstances) tour providers may be forced to change or cancel a tour. Tour companies
reserve the right to cancel a tour without prior notice due to reasons beyond their control with the only obligation of reimbursing the cost
of the tour. In this case, clients may claim reimbursement only of the amount paid. In the event of unforessen schedule or itinerary
changes beyond control, tour companies reserve the right to provide no reimbursement.
LIABILITY
Gartour and partnering tour companies are not responsible for any loss of personal valuables, luggage or objects during excursions, or for
any loss of personal items which are left on tour coaches, or for any damage casued by third parties to personal items during the tour.
We are not also responsible for partial or total closures of museums, monuments and churches, delays or irregularities caused by third
parties. Then an alternative itinerary and visits to other museums wil be proposed, without any variation to the established tariff, and
clients will be informed prior to departure. In the event of unforeseen schedule or itinerary changes beyond control, tour companies
reserve the right to not grant any reimbursements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND NOTES
Please note that Italian laws do not permit selling alcoholic beverage to teens under 18 years of age; therefore clients under-age will be
served non-alcoholic beverages.
We regret that not all the tours are accessible to guests with wheelchairs or physical impairments requiring special assistance. Please let
us know in advance of any special needs or clients' impaired mobility in order to determine whether participation in a particular tour is
possible.
COMPLAINTS
Any client complaint must be communicated to Gartour in writing within and no later than 10 working days after the date of the tour.
Thereafter Gartour is not obliged to review complaints and no reimbursements will be approved.
