Keller, Ph.D. NEW ACQUISITIONS Autumn Day by Rex Brandt R ex Brandt (American, 1914–2000) stood at the vanguard of California Scene Painting, a mid-20th Century departure from the golden state’s earlier impressionistic Plein Air movement. He learned both representational and abstract painting while studying at Berkeley, but throughout his career followed the overarching trend of moving towards the latter. Rather than creating photorealistic watercolor reproductions, Brandt began to focus on the essence of his subjects—looking for something that could not be found on film. Brandt ultimately discovered his lifelong style and philosophy in his “obsession with sunshine.” The intricacies of his ideology can be likened to Autumn Day, 1976 Rex Brandt (American, 1914–2000); Temecula, California an interest in the cause of light and a fascination with its Watercolor on paper Ann Cullen Collection effect. This exhibition gives exclusive access to an extraordinary collection of more than 100 medieval and renaissance arms and weaponry. On display are helmets, breastplates, and swords inlaid with intricate emblems of heroism. The exquisite work of centuries-old European craftsmen is brought to life, while triumphs of design shine on two horses in full guard, German crossbows, and sleek French daggers.
