TEAM SNOOPY PACENOTES - Part 1 Ah the next event. Quorn. Mid North. Plenty of time we said. We were right. Just didn’t seem to use it all that well. Had one whole night off from Rally car workshop and never quite caught up from there. Gave car once over. Made a list (well several actually), usual 5-6 pages long. We (Shane) would start out at night with the idea of finishing a least 2-4 items on list from dealing with car related problems/goals, to gathering spares, to sorting service vehicle. In reality we usually got only one sometimes not even that finished. Everything on this damm car took forever and was to me at least somewhat soul destroying at times. However after 4 weeks we made it to scrutineering (just as well it was at NISSCARE or we may not have. Passed OK, packed it on trailer and prepared to leave midmorning next day. HA! What a joke. Again. Took the day off only to be told service trailer wasn’t done, and car still bits & bobs to be done to it. Couple of hours they said. More like 5 in the end but at least this time we left in daylight. Patrol had job of towing service trailer which usually hates but thanks to new springs on rear and some TLC the Patrol towed the trailer like a whole new setup. AWESOME!!! It was wonderful doing 110 KP/H and not have the bloody thing swaying all over road behind you like demented demon trying to wreck your day & car as well. It rained nearly the whole way to Port Pirie where I was called up on 2 way and asked to pull over. Worried that there was a problem with Landcruiser (bite your tongue I was told) or worse the car trailer or its load, I was happily surprised to find the reason was Al & Toby who could hear us and decided to wait for us. Having caught up, made fresh Tea etc all round we set off again. Bit further up the road we nearly didn’t go any further at all. Comfortably enclosed in a convoy of about 12-15 vehicles with us at the pointy end we approached a slight rise on a dead straight piece of road. From the rear of said convoy a white VT Commodore with clearly someplace other than here to be started overtaking. After overtaking 3-4 vehicles I was watching waiting for him to slide back in as the rise was blind and nearly on us. He didn’t in fact I reckon he went harder, caught me wasn’t interested in the gap I left him and front and kept going. Suddenly black Nissan X – Trail appears coming the other way lights ablaze as it was that time of the day. Did it bother the Commodore? Not a chance. He kept going and the X-Trail who luckily had his wits about him could see if didn’t make room for this moron they end splattered all over the National Highway. He dived for the edge and did an excellent job of not losing control or his cool, our convoy all slowed down and made for the edges as well while the bloke with a fire to go to kept on going and disappeared without even attempting to slow down. Amazing no-one including the X-Trail stopped and we continued on our merry way Page 11 of 24
with wondering why our road toll isn’t higher than what it is. Half expected to see this bloke flipped on roof somewhere, or run out of fuel or most hopefully pulled over by the local constabulary for being a complete idiot. None of the above happened and we made Port Augusta, refuelled and eventually made Quorn about 7pm. Found our accommodation, got settled an found tea at the oval along with most of the field. Had tea, off-loaded rally car, found it was all good from travel and put car cover on it and waited for Rina, David & Paul who came up in Pauls Landcruiser who arrived about 9pm but somewhat unimpressed when told tea finished by the time they got to Snowtown. Everyone then got Team jumpers with pictures and sponsors all over them as a bit of a Thank You. Well almost everyone. Someone in the clothing shop couldn’t count it seems and I missed out. That OK so I took pictures instead. Bed finally beckoned and sleep eventually ensued. Next day dawned remarkably like Burra. BLOODY COLD & ICE! Again! It took a while to melt but we couldn’t wait as we had change service vehicles around as Al, Toby & I were doing chase duties and to get in front of the field for the 1st stage as they local council whose Mayor was a petrol head it seems closed off Pichi Richi Pass highway so the crews could use it a racetrack. We went and set up at the finish and waited & waited & waited for ages for the road to be closed and the cars to start. Eventually they did and it was a worry to see the 2 course cars come through with smoke off the brakes, exhausts, motors and even a battery in one case. The competing cars were no better and it’s a wonder no one called the fire brigade there was so much smoke at 1 stage. 9 ks long the stage was and times were between 3-4 minutes. You do the math. Shane & Karien got through OK and our day commenced either following them or racing across back roads, front roads & side roads to get to the end of the next stage before they did. We made too in every case although 30 seconds in 1 case was a bit close. Our fault really we made polite and followed a couple cars for 2 k’s as we were turning off onto dirt. So did they as it happened. Probably scared one car as they didn’t appear to see us until we pulled alongside and waved cheerfully at them. Got to end of stage just in time to see our crew arrive and depart down a different road before we turned around and went to meet them at the end of the next stage. Passed both the cars we had passed on the way still heading the end of stage and probably wondering what the hell we were doing. Made it there OK and so did the Crew. Regroup & Lunch in Hawker was good but the SSS after wards was 2k’s of dirt and dust and no one from ground level could see too much even with the wind blowing. No problem. Launch 1 AUV with camera and presto. Some vision of cars was possible but still too much dust to make out much as it had to go quite high to avoid dust itself. As we wound our way back to the finish point at Quorn we were running about 4th I figured and eventually after 360 k’s for crews and Page 12 of 24
about the same for us we finished 3rd I think. Great event, well run by Jon & Lisa and Jeremy and great hospitality had everyone declaring hey would be back. Once again we finished without setting the world on fire and some watchers said we were way off the pace in a straight line so it looked like more work on motors, turbos and the like to come. Maybe we would get there but was going to be longer than we originally thought I reckoned. Eudunda was next. Jake was director and would be nice to get on familiar ground I thought. See you all at the next gathering of dust clouds somewhere next event. Page 13 of 24

TEAM SNOOPY PACENOTES - Part 2 Having arrived back home without the intervention of further morons on the roads we unpacked and started the same process all over again for The Copyworld Walky 100 to be held at Eudunda this year for something different. Usual things done. Strip down rally car & clean and determine what needs/want/wishes to be done to it. Same to service trailer and service vehicles and so on & so on etc etc. Rolled up at NISSCARE one night to find a Ford Transit Van with pictures of tyres, cars, buggies & motorbikes all over it. Recognised it as one of Brenton clients and assumed it was there for service or something. Something was right. They were getting rid of it for a new vehicle and since the price right for Team Snoopy (Brenton) he bought it. Yeah Gods I said. First we get Subaru’s and now bloody Fords. What next? Mitsubishi’s for tow vehicles? Didn’t get too carried away luckily as we still used the Landcrusier & Patrol for chase & towing purposes. Spent 2 weeks stripping all the signage off the Zit (as we christened it), polishing it repeatedly till met approval and then got it sign written, redesigned inside and fitted out as per Brentons & Al’s ideas – well within reason anyway. Just before The Copyworld Walky 100 it was deemed to be suitable to go. Actually what they said was “It will have to do we’ll rejig the rest later”. Rejig what I said. They had installed a workbench, racking system, storage for spare gearbox, spare diff, spare exhaust, 6-8 spare tyres and the usual myriad of stuff that goes in a service vehicle with room left over. That apparently was the problem. Can’t have room left over. Problem for another day I was told. Right!! While all this commotion over Zit was going on Shane & others kept working on rally car. Still worried by the lack of power available, we cast around for some outside expertise and eventually found some from an unlikely source. Mike Dale who does just about everything Mitsubishi Evo turbos agreed to look at Shanes after he found out it wasn’t your typical Subaru turbo system. More Mitsubishi or similar I was told. So all turbos are not alike it seems. After a brief inspection he said it was a wonder were getting any boost at all as some hose buried in the thing was either on back to front, on the wrong fitting or just not there at all. (Something like that anyway all too technical for me). After more days and more nights on dyno at MTAA they found some boost up where it belonged if not exactly what they hoped for. Apparently what you hope for is rarely if ever achieved anyway it seems. Somewhat buoyed by the boost in power and the new service van, the Zit, we got ready for scrutineering again. Luckily it was at NISSCARE again. Amazingly we ready before the event rather than after. Passed again. Another tick. Page 17 of 24
Things were looking up. Pace noting went well it seemed. Another tick. Weather looked a bit dodgy but it rains infrequently we were told. Might blow a bit. Friday we arrived, set up our service area in some sheltered from the wind but it was a nice sunny day and pleasant. Tea at the Top Pub as usual and all was going swimmingly. Till we went to go home that night. The wind came up again doing 20 knots. Gunna blow a bit said the locals. Mmmm! Its only wind. We’ll be OK. Next morning the wind had not abated only increased in tempo I thought. Just as the event started so did the rain. It quickly turned into an episode of Rally Survivor as it blew and rained all day. At one stage we were at a spectator point – well one of ours anyway at about 2 pm. The wind was doing 30-35 knots gusting 45 if you tell the difference, the rain was horizontal rather vertical and it reached a maximum of 7C then got colder for the rest of the day. The event had to cancel 2 stages they were so wet and the rest were subject to inspection before running. Couple of re routes got some crews lost as the directions were written on the fly and overall not a pleasant day anywhere even in the service vehicles. Rally cars got water & mud all over & inside them which made for a miserable day out for some crews. We finished 4th O/R & 1st for an all WACC crew but all we wanted to do at the end was get warm & some hot food inside us. Congratulations to the control & road closure officials who deserved the accolades not the crews and medals as well. Even in those conditions which were the worst I’ve seen in 30 years they all turned up and did their parts with incredible resilience. HUGE THANK YOU & KUDOS TO ALL OF THEM. Well done to Jake and the rest of his crew who did a really good job of having any event at all. The only amusing thing was some of the stories told after the event about the weather and conditions it caused. Reminded me of a elderly lady back in my home district who despite being 65 or so bought herself this 5L V8 2 door Monaro when they first came out back in the late 70’s early 80’s. Seems she was out 1 winters night heading home in similar conditions which are not unusual over home & she swore that the wind was so strong it was bending her headlight beams in the dark. At this stage Peter Schey & Kate Catford looked like winning the Championship barring somewhat of a disaster on their part like not even rolling up at the AHBR based at Mount Barker. This event was promising a lap around the new race track at The Bend just outside Tailem Bend. That sounded interesting to say the least. For us it was back to the dyno it seems as the car was down on power after a hopeful start although it ran OK. Oh well back to the drawing board. See you all at the next gathering of dust clouds somewhere next event. Page 18 of 24
