The Hard Nut: A Modern Nutcracker E Saturday, December 7, 2019 The renowned Mark Morris Dance Group brings to the Paramount Theater in Seattle a Nutcracker like no other! Celebrating its 28th Anniver- sary, The Hard Nut com- bines classic elements of ETA Hoffman's beloved sto- ry and Tchaikovsky's quintes- sential score performed live by a 53-piece orchestra. But the Mark Morris’ version takes it from the straight-laced 1890s to the swinging 70s, with raucous parties, dancing G.I. Joes, whimsical costumes, and a Waltz of the Snowflakes unlike anything you’ve seen before. If you're tired of the same Christmas tradition year in and year out, then the outrageous modern dance revamp that is Hard Nut is for you! Expect the spectacle of the Nutcracker ballet with a sprinkling of naughtiness and a whole lot of heart. We will stop for brunch at Portage Bay Café South Lake Union. Known for their breakfast bar and local, organic, and sustainable breakfast and lunch menu items, the Portage Bay is one of Senior Services trav- elers’ favorite. $142/$152 Member/General Public Includes transportation, admission and meal. Many displays return year after year; the most iconic are the giant red teddy bear, Candy Cane Lane, a gi- ant dragon, and a pirate ship, but new displays are added each year as well. We begin with a delicious sup- per at one of Yelm’s newest eateries, the highly rated, Gather Gastropub. $55/$65 Member/General Public Includes transportation, meal and admission. Christmas Revels in Tacoma E Saturday, December 14, 2019 The Puget Sound Revels builds community through the art using traditional music, dance, and drama drawn from many cultures. Each year they present a Christmas show with the stories, music and dance of different cultures, centered loosely on the Winter Solstice/Christmas season. This year, the Rialto Theater in Taco- ma is transformed into the Balkan Peninsula, where we’ll cele- brate the season with the colorful folk stories, stunning harmo- nies, lively dances, resplendent costumes, and intriguing tradi- tions of Bulgaria, Croatia, Mace- donia, Serbia, and Bosnia. Lunch is served at The Swiss Restaurant & Pub housed in an historic 1913 building in the midst of downtown Tacoma. They like to say “you’re a stranger here but once.” We’ve been be- fore and our clients raved about the tasty sandwiches, large por- tions and unique atmosphere in this historic building. $99/$109 Member/General Public Includes transportation, meal and performance. mARCH Forgotten Stories:Art of WPA at Tacoma Art Museum Friday, March 13, 2020 M Remember when the government paid art- ists to make art? It was early 1934, and the United States was near the depths of a de- pression with unemployment close to 25 percent. As the Federal Emergency Relief Act, a prototype of the New Deal work- relief programs, began to put a few dollars into the pockets of hungry workers, the question arose whether to include artists among the beneficiaries. But Harry Hop- kins, whom President Franklin D. Roose- velt put in charge of work relief, settled the matter, saying, "Hell, they've got to eat just like other people!" Thus was born the Pub- lic Works of Art Project (PWAP). Forgotten Stories: Northwest Public Art of the 1930’s at the Tacoma Art Museum looks at some of the thousands of artworks created in our region whose stories are mostly unknown. This trip has some special added value; we will start with coffee and pastries and a talk from Gery Gerst, a former Olympia teacher and cur- rent faculty in Senior Services’ Academic Program. He will share the historical context in which the WPA was created and a sum- mary of other projects. After visiting the museum we will head over to the new McMenamin’s in the historic Elks Temple where you can explore and get a meal on your own at one of the restau- rants onsite. $65/$75 Member/General Public Includes transportation, snacks and museum admission.
