A Victorian Country Christmas Experience M
Thursday, December 5, 2019
                                    Puyallup is our destination for
                                    these two Victorian Christmas
events. First stop is the 1886
                                    Meeker Mansion, fully deco-
                                    rated for Christmas. We’ll en-
                                    joy a traditional English Tea
                                    service that includes cucum-
                                    ber sandwiches, scones, tarts,
                                    lemon bread, pumpkin bread,
fruit, and tea served in English Bone China cups. A guided tour
of the mansion follows. Rumored to be haunted, it is just a wee
bit creepy, but mostly old timey wonderful.

Our next stop is the Victorian Country Christmas Festival. The
Washington state fairgrounds are transformed into a Victorian
village where holiday music fills the air! With over 500 stores,
you’ll find the perfect gift for everyone on your list. There’s gour-
met food, wine, and delicious tasty treats you can purchase
throughout the festival. With your holiday shopping done, sit
down in one of the theaters and take in some live performance.

The Hard Nut: A Modern Nutcracker
                                                      E

                                     The renowned Mark Morris
                                     Dance Group brings to the
                                     Paramount Theater in Seattle
                                     a Nutcracker like no other!
                                     Celebrating its 28th Anniver-
                                     sary, The Hard Nut com-
                                     bines classic elements of
                                     ETA Hoffman's beloved sto-
                                     ry and Tchaikovsky's quintes-
                                     sential score performed live
by a 53-piece orchestra. But the Mark Morris’ version takes it
from the straight-laced 1890s to the swinging 70s, with raucous
parties, dancing G.I. Joes, whimsical costumes, and a Waltz of
the Snowflakes unlike anything you’ve seen before.

If you're tired of the same Christmas tradition year in and year
out, then the outrageous modern dance revamp that is Hard Nut
is for you! Expect the spectacle of the Nutcracker ballet with a
sprinkling of naughtiness and a whole lot of heart.

We will stop for brunch at
Portage Bay Café South
Lake Union. Known for
their breakfast bar and local,
organic, and sustainable
breakfast and lunch menu
items, the Portage Bay is
one of Senior Services trav-
elers’ favorite.

Fantasy Lights in Spanaway E
Wednesday, December 11, 2019

                                    Fantasy Lights is an amazing
                                    Christmas display that takes
place each year just south of
                                    Tacoma. Unlike other large
                                    holiday displays, this event
                                    doesn’t require getting out of
your vehicle, or in this case,
our bus. Fantasy Lights is the
largest drive-thru Christmas lights show in the Northwest with
more than 300 lit-up displays lining the roadways all throughout
the park and around Spanaway Lake.
Many displays return year after year;
the most iconic are the giant red
teddy bear, Candy Cane Lane, a gi-
ant dragon, and a pirate ship, but
new displays are added each year as
well. We begin with a delicious sup-
per at one of Yelm’s newest eateries,
the highly rated, Gather Gastropub.

Christmas Revels in Tacoma E
Saturday, December 14, 2019

The Puget Sound Revels builds community through the art using
traditional music, dance, and drama drawn from many cultures.
Each year they present a Christmas show with the stories, music
and dance of different cultures, centered loosely on the Winter
Solstice/Christmas season. This year, the Rialto Theater in Taco-
ma is transformed into the Balkan Peninsula, where we’ll cele-
brate the season with the colorful folk stories, stunning harmo-
nies, lively dances, resplendent costumes, and intriguing tradi-
tions of Bulgaria, Croatia, Mace-
donia, Serbia, and Bosnia.

Lunch is served at The Swiss
Restaurant & Pub housed in an
historic 1913 building in the
midst of downtown Tacoma.
They like to say “you’re a stranger
here but once.” We’ve been be-
fore and our clients raved about
the tasty sandwiches, large por-
tions and unique atmosphere in
this historic building.

 Thursday, January 9, 2020
January can be a long, gray month in
our neck of the woods, but getting out
with friends for a drink, a movie and a
meal can lift our spirits and chase
those winter blues away. We start at the
Uptown Lounge located in the Yelm
Cinema complex. You can get a drink
on your own as we wait for our films
to start. The holiday season always has
a plethora of new exciting films being
released. We won’t know the details of what will be playing until
closer to the date but some films due out at that time include:
Little Women, 1917, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Cats, and
Bombshell. You will get to choose which film you wish to see.

After the films we head over to Tacos Gaby for a Mexican din-
ner together and chance to socialize and compare notes on the
films.

Bohemia at the Triple Door M
Sunday, January 26, 2020
We’re off to Seattle’s famed Triple Door
for the smash hit, Bohemia a freewheeling
cabaret about love, classical music, art
nouveau, green fairies and absinthe. Set
in 1890s Prague, the story centers
                          around famous Czech composer Anto-
nin Dvorák who has hit a wall and prior
to composing his magnum opus, so he
looks to the bottom of a bottle of ab-
sinthe for inspiration. In this macabre
and mystical dream cabaret, Dvorák is
visited by the ghost of late composer
Frederick Chopin and a host of green fairies. Historic artists
like Sarah Bernhardt and George Sand, interweave with beauti-
ful green fairies, aerial numbers, dance, burlesque, classical pi-
ano battles, comedy, and original songs.

The Triple Door is Seattle’s premier performance venue offer-
ing full table service throughout the performance. The kitchen
delivers award winning Southeast Asian
dishes from their sister restaurant, Wild
Ginger featuring local ingredients,
fresh Pacific Northwest seafood, and

Forgotten Stories:Art of WPA at Tacoma Art Museum
Friday, March 13, 2020 M

Remember when the government paid art-
ists to make art? It was early 1934, and the
United States was near the depths of a de-
pression with unemployment close to 25
percent. As the Federal Emergency Relief
Act, a prototype of the New Deal work-
relief programs, began to put a few dollars
into the pockets of hungry workers, the
question arose whether to include artists
among the beneficiaries. But Harry Hop-
kins, whom President Franklin D. Roose-
velt put in charge of work relief, settled the matter, saying, "Hell,
they've got to eat just like other people!" Thus was born the Pub-
lic Works of Art Project (PWAP).

Forgotten Stories: Northwest Public Art of the 1930’s at the Tacoma
Art Museum looks at some of the thousands of artworks created
in our region whose stories are mostly unknown. This trip has
some special added value; we will start with coffee and pastries
and a talk from Gery Gerst, a former Olympia teacher and cur-
rent faculty in Senior Services’ Academic Program. He will share
the historical context in which the WPA was created and a sum-
mary of other projects. After visiting the museum we will head
over to the new McMenamin’s in the historic Elks Temple where
you can explore and get a meal on your own at one of the restau-
rants onsite.
