Robert James Stevenson 1931-2012 The death recently occurred of Robert Stevenson of one of Albany’s pioneer families. The Stevensons had lived in the area since 1859, contributing greatly to the development and establish- ment of the settlement. Roly and Roye Stevenson, grandsons of the original settler, began a carrying business in 1920: older local residents will certainly remember Stevenson Bros. Robert was born to Roly and Minnie (nee Philips) in 1931, an only child. He grew up in Albany, played with the local children, attended Albany School and Northcote District High School, then for eight years he was in the Air Force at Hobsonville. In 1957, he left to take over the family business, and married Gloria Gemmell, they had two daughters. Robert retired in 1985, and developed a strong interest in the history of his family, and of the Albany Village and district. He interviewed old identities, and the idea of a book was born. It was obvious that the district was destined for development, and that the physical and cultural history would be lost. So, together with a cousin the book, “Once There Were Green Fields”, was written, and published in 2002. Robert became much in demand as a speaker, especially to schools and to historical groups; he was re- garded as the Albany Historian. In 2003, Robert and Gloria moved to Kerikeri, where he became involved in many activities, making many friends. Gloria passed away, and this year, on February 25th, Robert followed her. His funeral was held at Kerikeri on 29th February 2012. He is survived by his two daughters and three grandchildren. Rest in peace – a true gentleman. Upper Harbour Local Board Report – Margaret Miles Deputy Chair Is now the time to reflect on what the Super City has provided for us? We are now nearly 18 months in this first term of the new Super City. This month I have reflected on just where we are at. These are my personal views and I welcome your feedback. In my report last month I informed residents of their opportunity to submit to the Council’s Long Term Plan (LTP) and by the time the Pare Publisher is in your letterbox the submissions will have closed. It has become very clear over the last month reading through the detail in the LTP that North Shore residents will not do well, - are any of us surprised? There has been a huge emphasis on the Mayor’s promotion of his inner city rail loop forecast to cost $2.86 billion which is a major factor in the ballooning debt this Council is proposing. Roading projects which the North Shore Council had included in its LTP seem to be pushed out to later years (I do wonder if they will even happen). The improvements at the intersection at The Avenue/SH17 is a classic example as this has been pushed out to 2016. Rates for the Shore will be increased yet projects and services definitely aren’t increasing for us – many of us predicted that we would be paying for projects across the bridge. The standard of maintenance of the Shore road sides is being complained about by many and I receive frequent comments that our parks are not being maintained to the level they were under the previous council. So is it time for the Super City Council to stop and think – DO WE NEED THIS OR DO WE JUST WANT IT? In our own lives we can often have a big list of the things we want but on reflecting on our ability to pay for these the list is often reduced to just what we actually need. It is my view that now is the time for this Council to relook at the plan they have put together and in light of the difficult financial times we live in, ask the question in regard to many of these big projects - DO WE NEED THIS? So has the Super City worked for us? The Upper Harbour Local Board would welcome your attendance at meetings to raise any issues with the Board. There is a public forum at the beginning of each meeting so you can come along and speak to us. Upper Harbour Local Board meetings will be held at Albany on Tuesday March 27th at 7pm, Tuesday April 10th at 9.30am and Tuesday April 24th at 7pm. Pare Swap n Trade People in Pare have all sorts of things to trade and swap. This happens already with neighbours exchanging items such as tomatoes for eggs. We are taking it a step further and making easier by doing it online. How to get started on Facebook 1. In your internet browser go to the Facebook welcome page at www.facebook.com. On this welcome page you will see the “Sign Up” section. Fill in your name, email, birthday and gender. Click the “Sign Up” button, and then enter the code you see on their security page. You will be sent a confirmation email. 2. Access your email account, click on the link in the email from Facebook and you will be taken to the “Getting Started” page. If any of your friends have been looking for you on Facebook already, you will see an option to accept/confirm this friend. Click confirm and go on to the next step. 3. Facebook will now ask if you want your email account or instant message friend list scanned for al- ready registered friends. You can skip this step or allow, it is your preference. (Not all email servers are supported.) 4. In the next step you can enter your High School, College or other Learning Institutions, as well as your place of employment. Once you enter this information, Facebook will take you to a page displaying peo- ple on Facebook that have similar information. You are given the option of selecting them as “friend”. 5. Once you select your friends from the people shown, you will be taken to a page where you are asked to enter where you live so that Facebook can place you in a Network. The city you enter may not be listed, but you will be given options of cities that they determine might be geographically close to you. Select one and your sign up process is complete. You will be immediately taken to the YOUR Facebook “home” page. 6. You have now successfully gotten started on Facebook. It is up to you to set up and edit your profile, continue adding friends and posting your activities. How to Find the Pare Publisher on Facebook 1. At the top of your Facebook page, you will see a white search box. Type in here “Pare Publisher” and hit enter on your key board. 2. Click on Pare Publisher and you will be taken to the Pare Publisher’s Facebook page. Next to the page title there is a button called “like”. Click on this to save the Pare Publisher to your profile and also to be able to view all the information on our page. 3. Now that you “like” the Pare Publisher, any new posts or information we make will show up on your home page, so make sure you check your Facebook regularly! Facebook is all about community and relationships so make sure you check your Facebook account regu- larly!

Do you know of the Flametree Art Garden and Gallery – it’s on our very doorstep! Right at the northern end of O’Brien Road, this gallery and sculpture garden was pur- pose-built by Shelley Chignell and her hus- band, on their own land. Shelley has professional experience in running dealer art galleries in central Auckland, so she had her own architecturally designed to be excellent for its purpose. Off-road parking leads to a covered forecourt with spacious doors leading into the gallery itself. The gar- dens’ many paths are full of changing sculptural works in ceramics, stone, wood and metal, by nationally known artists. All works are for sale and exhibitions are scheduled throughout most of the year. Showing now is a group show titled “North”, from leading artists from the Hokianga area. Large paintings by Beverley Cox of leaves in autumnal colours are eye-catching. A closer look reveals beau- tiful multicolour sheens from gold leaf in the oils/acrylics mix. Expressive art photographs by Marg Morrow, taken by pin-hole camera – no lens – are printed with “dis- tressed” texture and colour using silver gelatine. An adapted primitive photographic technique and alter- native darkroom processes. Rachel Miller shows “Small Prayers for Now”, soft-colour multiples in a series of abstract paintings. Liz McAuliffe carves and paints native timbers, creating life-like sculptures replicating their seeds, pods, nuts and leaves. Her “Nature’s Exquisite Objects” are like individual jewellery pieces, collectively displayed on wall-hung panels. On a larger scale, “Observations” painted by Claire Deighton on recycled kauri ceiling boards in brilliant acrylic colours, suggest abstract sunset panoramas. A polished 3 metre silky oak beam by Lindsay Evans is titled “ Door for the Narrow Minded”. It’s metal hinged at one end with a handle at the other – and yes, it does “open”! He also shows a fascinating instal- lation, “Accretions”, using an old leather bowling-ball case. The bowling balls themselves are knobbed with rat-chewed macadamia nuts, these glued on and over-painted into abstract sculptures. This exhibition is well worth visiting – Thursdays to Sundays, 11am to 4pm, until April 5th. Howard Williams Art Advocate, writer, photographer Pare Garden Group Our plan for April 15th Sunday is to go to Botanical Gardens out at Manakau. Meet at 10:45 in the car park at the Pare Community club for carpooling and leave by 11:00hrs. Take a packed lunch and drink and we will have a picnic there. Return time will be by negotiation. If raining or queries phone Judy 413-8358 or Julie 413-5442
RIDGEVIEW GARDEN CLUB The garden club has had a very slow start to the year due to being rained out every Thursday at lunchtime for weeks! We did have one very sunny Thursday where we managed to plant our seedlings (kindly donated by local ‘Certified Organic Herb and Seedlings’ grower Rob Velseboer) AND we also created a delicious batch of pesto with the HUGE stack of basil that had grown very successfully over the school holidays. We took the food blender ‘garden-side’ and picked leaves, washed leaves, chopped garlic, mushed it altogether and devoured the freshest pesto you could taste. Extra stocks of basil were also kindly donated by a local gardener, (thanks Mr Hall!) so that we could make enough for the whole school to sample! Obviously pine nuts are far too extravagant, so we used cashews instead. Here’s the recipe... it’s deli- cious! CASHEW BASIL PESTO • 1 cup fresh basil leaf • 3 garlic cloves , roughly chopped • ½ cup cashews • ½ cup parmesan cheese or ½ cup romano cheese • ½ cup olive oil 1. In a food processor, finely chop basil, garlic, cashews and cheese. 2. Slowly drizzle in olive oil. (Use amount that will make to desired consistency.). 3. Season to taste with salt and pepper HOT COMPOST MATERIAL WANTED: Another hot composting session is about to come up, so if you have any egg cartons or newspapers, please drop them into the school office and we’ll recycle them into ‘RidgeView Hot compost’ once more! Other ‘garden goals’ for the year are to develop our insectory (it’s just full of swan plants at the mo) and hopefully our fruit trees will start producing some serious crops! Yum! Please contact me if you have any other fun gardening ideas for the students ! Happy Gardening! Community Policing Hi All, One of the major crime trends that is occurring at the moment is the continuing theft of car li- cence plates from parked vehicles. This now accounts for approximately 1/4 of all theft ex-car inci- dents on the North Shore and is a continuing problem for the Albany area; especially areas where vehicles are parked for extended periods of time, such as the shopping mall car parks. I would strongly encourage everybody to report any suspicious behaviour or people that they ob- serve hanging around in these areas, and also in general. As always the Police are unable to deal with these people if we do not know they are there, therefore by ringing the Police you are giving us the opportunity to speak with them and determine if they are there for legitimate purposes or up to no good. It significantly increases our chances of apprehending these people if you are able to ring at the time that you observe something, rather than waiting until later, perhaps when you get home, and then ringing the Police. Do not be afraid of ringing 111, if it is not an emergency then the Po- lice operator may direct you to ring your local station (Ph 477-5000 North Shore Policing Centre) however once again please give us the opportunity to make this decision. On another matter at the end of January there was a community teddy bear’s picnic held in Kell Park, in the Albany Village. During this great community event three children’s push scooters were put out for the kids to use, however unfortunately at the end of the picnic these scooters had been stolen. The scooters are quite distinctive in that they have larger wheels than most of the other kid’s scooters that are so popular at the moment. They are coloured all black, with silver handle bars; they have the word ‘Scooter’ in white writing on the front fork, and they have ap- proximately 15cm round black wheels (larger than most on the market). If you know of any lo- cal children who have acquired a new scooter around this time and it matches this description, please let me know. Well enjoy the last of the sunshine as winter will be here all too soon. Stay safe. Cheers Tane Tane Dyer Albany Community Constable Ph 027 227 4886. START BEATING BURGLARY RIGHT NOW. This involves the removal of the Leyland Cy- press and Japanese Cedars (Cryptomeria Japonica), and replacing them with healthy native species. It also involves the replacement of the Leyland Cypress trees along the northern boundary of the industrial park. This will pro- vide a boost to the native tree and bird popula- tions in the Paremoremo area. The aim is to take the existing trees out and complete replanting before winter sets in. The number of homes sold in Albany in February leapt to their highest number for a February in five years, but price rises for the month were modest. This is in line with what the Barfoot & Thompson monthly sales figures report. There was a lot of activity in the apartment market with thirteen apart- ments/units being sold within the month. All of these sales were under $500,000. This area covers Albany and Albany Heights. For more information on local sales go to www.downtoear- thre.co.nz DID YOU KNOW?... A new security system is being introduced to Barfoot & Thompson salespeople to use with their vendors. It is expected to be released this month. We are all required to have an iphone or a smartphone in order to operate the new technology being introduced. Watch this space! Homestar have launched a new facebook page in preparation for a media campaign in March. It is based around having a Healthy Home. View their facebook page and click like for updates. Alternatively go to their website homestar.co.nz and do the online home health checklist, they have some great prizes this month. Due to high demand, Barfoot & Thompson are going to employ a new auctioneer to cover the Albany, Hibiscus Coast, Coatesville and Kumeu areas. Tony Loughran who currently covers the whole area has been totally stretched to smitherines! He tells us that Barfoot & Thompson are receiving more pre-auc- tion offers than ever before. On a personal note... Any spare chance I get I am in the garden constructing stone walls so I can plant! I must admit I have become a bit addicted to it, it’s like doing a jigsaw and you just want to get it finished! I was certain that the legal requirement for a retainer wall without any council consent was no higher than 1.2m. On checking it out, I was delighted to see they have changed it – it is now 1.5m. I can now plod on getting higher with my lat- est wall without having to bother with bureaucratic paperwork and coughing out more money to Council! What’s more, it’s a great excuse for not going to the gym! By the way if you need to check out consent requirements, go to the build- ing section of the Auckland Council website. Do I need a building consent? Until next month—Barb www.downtoearthre.co.nz 17
